NEWS FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD Journey The moment you hear that opening keyboard riff – if you KNOW the song, then you know every single word by heart! The chorus and chords came from Jonathan Cain, a member of the band Journey, after he received sage wisdom from his father. Jonathan was at a crossroads in his life and had to ask his dad for $900 to pay a vet bill. Cain asked his daddy if he needed to give up on his Hollywood dreams and just come home. His dad’s words hit home in Jonathan’s heart and later that night on his Wurlitzer piano, “Son, don’t stop believing.” Released in 1981, “Don’t Stop Believin’” went on to be Jour- ney’s signature song. Today it remains one of the most popular rock songs of all time. But what does that have to do with Children in Crisis? It’s about an- other type of journey…one where the road is long, hard, and sometimes you just want to give up. That’s exactly where one of our middle school kids was at. Between family issues with substance use, multiple domestic distur- bance calls to the police, and the fear and anger involved watching a parent being taken away in a police car, there’s no secret why many children arrive at our neighborhood mad. While our homes are wonderful, children are dropped off by people they just met to our staff, who they’ve never met, and then given rules about a program they never knew existed. Add in the fear that comes when there’s been talk of being separated from your baby sister who relies on you every day and you might begin to understand just how angry this young man was. He remained that way, too, until July 26 th . It was the wrap-up to our fun-filled summer. We were on our Annual Dolphin Cruise when that keyboard riff hit! His face lit up and then a big smile crossed his face as he realized that I knew the song too. Though 30 feet apart on the boat, we sang the entire song together while every other kid on the boat followed his lead! For a moment, he was the leader of the band and soon every child was singing at the top of his or her lungs, "Don't stop believin' Hold on to that feelin" That was the turning point. For one brief moment, his eyes were shining and he had the biggest smile I had ever seen. Later he told me that his family loves old rock and roll and this is one of his favorite songs. The anger lifted. He is holding on. He knows his family is working hard to bring him home. Until then, he makes the best of being here, watches out for his baby sister, and he still believes. Eventually, it will all be okay. ISSUE 25 FALL 2018 Story Page 3 Join us for David Seering February 17 th

Journey The moment you hear that opening keyboard riff – if you KNOW the song, then you know every single word by heart! The chorus and chords came from Jonathan Cain, a member of the band Journey, after he received sage wisdom from his father. Jonathan was at a crossroads in his life and had to ask his dad for $900 to pay a vet bill. Cain asked his daddy

if he needed to give up on his Hollywood dreams and just come home. His dad’s words hit home in Jonathan’s heart and later that night on his

Wurlitzer piano, “Son, don’t stop believing.” Released in 1981, “Don’t Stop Believin’” went on to be Jour-

ney’s signature song. Today it remains one of the most popular rock songs of all time. But what does that have to do with Children in Crisis? It’s about an-

other type of journey…one where the road is long, hard, and sometimes you just want to give up.

That’s exactly where one of our middle school kids was at. Between family issues with substance use, multiple domestic distur-

bance calls to the police, and the fear and anger involved watching aparent being taken away in a police car, there’s no secret why many

children arrive at our neighborhood mad. While our homes are wonderful, children are dropped off by people they just met to

our staff, who they’ve never met, and then given rules about a program they never knew existed. Add in the fear that comes

when there’s been talk of being separated from your babysister who relies on you every day and you might begin to

understand just how angry this young man was. He remained that way, too, until July 26th. It was the

wrap-up to our fun-filled summer. We were on our Annual Dolphin Cruise when that keyboard riff hit! His

face lit up and then a big smile crossed his face as he realized that I knew the song too. Though 30 feet

apart on the boat, we sang the entire song together while every other kid on the boat followed his

lead! For a moment, he was the leader of the band and soon every child was singing at the

top of his or her lungs,

"Don't stop believin' Hold on to that feelin"

That was the turning point. For one brief moment, his eyes were shining and he had the biggest smile I had ever seen. Later he told me that his family loves old rock and roll and this is one of his favorite

songs. The anger lifted. He is holding on. He knows his family is working hard to bring him home.

Until then, he makes the best of being here, watches out for his baby sister, and he still

believes. Eventually, it will all be okay.

Our Special Thanks...A Note from KenMy message usually starts with the wonderful milestones and accomplishments CIC has made this year. However in this message, I’d like to focus on the unbelievably wonderful things our community has done for the children through CIC.

Since opening our Susanna Wesley Emergency Shelter for abused and neglected children in 2008, we’ve given a home to over 850 at-risk children which is over 107,000 nights and days for a child in need of a loving home.

Thanks to community support, we’ve kept all our brother and sister sibling groups together as a family! We’ve aided in the adoption of over 35 foster children to forever homes and ironically, many of those children were adopted by a CIC staff member.

CIC was built by our community, it’s sustained and supported by our community and is a gift to our entire community. Many, many times CIC is the charity at the next step in the protection and care of children. When the family is torn apart by unfortunate circumstances, CIC is there. When there’s abuse in the home and the children are homeless, CIC is there.

On any given day there are about 50 children living at the CIC Neighborhood. All communities should have a CIC. With the community’s continued commitment, CIC will be there for the children.

Your commitment of support to help provide a home to our foster children and sustain operations of the CIC Neighborhood is critical. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of hundreds of children and an investment in the future of our community!

Destin Charity Wine Auction FoundationThanks to a record breaking 2018 Charity Wine Auction Event, Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation donated $2.7 million to local charities serving children in need in Northwest Florida. A check for $200,000 was presented to Children in Crisis at a ceremony last week. This is the 13th consecutive year DCWAF has donated to CIC, to help give a home to over 850 children. CIC and the children living at the Neighborhood send a BIG THANKS to the DCWAF for their continued wonderful support and making a difference in the lives of so many children.

Sugar Sands GolfThanks to Tuscany Italian Bistro, Tommy Bahama and other area restaurants and businesses, the 11th Annual Sugar Sands Charity Golf Classic benefiting Children in Crisis, raised over $42,000.

White-WilsonThe supporters of White-Wilson Community Fund Foundation helped the kids living at Children in Crisis with a generous donation of $9,470.07. The funding will provide training, books, activities and games to promote posi-tive therapeutic interventions in areas such as anger management/coping, grief and loss and self-harm. This donation toward a critical need for our kids will truly make a difference. We are very thankful for the support.

FudpuckersFudpuckers of Destin presented $10,793.84 to CIC at a ceremony surrounded by live gators. The funds were raised by the “Cops Rock” event and t-shirt sales. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office partnered with Fudpuckers.

Emerald Coast FoundationThe Emerald Coast Foundation selected Children in Crisis to be one of the benefiting charities of the ECF Boat Week and Poker Run and donated a check for $26,000.

United WayAlan Wood, Chairman of the Board for United Way of Okaloosa and Walton Counties, continued critical support to CIC by presenting $50,000 at the Annual Community Impact Check Presentation.

United Way serves donors, advocates and volunteers with the organization and leadership they require to provide financial stability, education opportunities, and healthy lives to their community. They envision a community where resources are aligned to ensure people are healthy, families are strong, and youth and adults are engaged in strengthening social bonds.

Thank you...

Harley davidsonThanks again to Emerald Coast Harley Davidson. Beyond the Beer Fest (see p. 2), they also created an event for our children. CIC kids toured the store, garage, storage facility and rode the motorcycle simulator. Even our littlest girls love pretending to be part of the HOGS Chapter.

NASA TripCIC kids went on an adventure to Cape Carnival with a NASA Tour. Before arriving, one child asked, “We aren’t actually going into to space are we?”

Summertime funOur kids jumped into summer. They had a great time and gained skills to prepare them for the next school year.

The interlinc family foundationThe Interlinc Family Foundation has awarded a grant of $1,075 to Children In Crisis Inc. to purchase trauma-focused books, games and other resources to teach children how to positively express their feelings and resolve past and current conflicts through play.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is similar to Play Therapy, where a child expresses and works through unconscious conflicts through play instead of words.

According to Sam Yozviak, “The family approved the grant application to help at-risk local children like the kids living at the CIC Neighborhood.”

Keller Williams Red DayMembers of Keller Williams Emerald Coast donated their time, talents and hard work during a recent work-day to help make The Children in Crisis Neighborhood look great. There were over 50 volunteers from the KW offices all around the panhandle. The volunteers pressure washed all the homes, completed normal grounds maintenance, added pine straw to all the landscape beds and a host of other tasks.

Destin commonsDestin Commons presented a $3,250 donation to Children in Crisis from funds generated through their “Coins for a Cause” program and the Smoke on the Coast event.

MommapaloozaGo-getter moms from around the country formed “Mommapalooza.” They go on “mom trips,” fellowship vacations where they support a local charity. This year, they chose Children in Crisis. CIC set up a Wish List registry, and these ladies went to work! As soon as the list went live, CIC began receiving packages! Boxes included laptop computers, outdoor games, pajamas, and other goodies. They also gave a cash donation of $2,285!

New driver alert!Heads up there is a new driver on the road! After a lot of trial and error and a little help from Bridgeway Driving School, Lucas has earned his Driver’s License.

Kind thoughtAlthough he did not want this picture shared, when asked what his Christmas wish was this year, Quintin said, “Please have the donor that would have given me the gift, give to Bay County.”
