Children, Teens and Suicide ER visits doubled between 2007 and 2015 A recent study published by the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey indicates that the number of children and teens who visited an ER because of suicidal thoughts or attempts doubled between 2007 and 2015. These numbers are very alarming. (Reference: https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/08/health/child-teen-suicide-er- study/index.html). Why? It’s complicated! There are increasing pressures on children and adolescents. Increased feeling of pressure to achieve in school, to be better than the rest, to get into a good school, bullying, family pressures, and financial stressors are just some of the reasons. Parents are under fire as well. Overall, suicide rates are increasing at all ages, so stressed parents influence kids to get stressed, and worse. So what do we do about this? We need to be alert for the “Four Pillars of Suicide” Dr. Phil Collier, Link Care’s CEO and Clinical Director, has just written a book: A Pastor’s Handbook for Mental Health Emergencies. He presents many different emergencies, and how to get help, and where to get help. He will begin training on it in a month or so. In the training on suicide, he talks about the 4 pillars of suicide: 1. Hopelessness 2. Isolation, aloneness, abandonment 3. Negative self-evaluation, self hate, self disregard 4. Inability to cope. How are we to be alert for things like this? If it were me, I would listen for these issues to come up in my conversations with children and teens: “I hate myself, no one likes me, I don’t want to be with anybody, I am useless. I can’t do this any more.” Sometimes these things might be said just in anger, but there is usually more to it than that. If I were you, I would want to pray with and for this child or adolescent, like this: Lord – thanks so much for Ben sharing with me about his sense of hurt and pain. He feels so alone, and doesn’t believe anyone cares for him. Lord, help him to see that I do, but more importantly that you do as well.
