The JPK Project is a registered charity set up in 2001 to meet the needs of people with a learning disability in the East Sussex area. The charity has had an offer to buy a site accepted, subject to contract and planning consent, and has ambitious plans for a suitable building there.

JPK Project - a Record Result After several weeks of dreadful weather we were once again blessed with a fi ne day on May 17th. I am so grateful that so many friends chose to support me again, in what has become an annual event?! My sister and Mum always enjoy coming to help and always remark on the happy atmosphere that abounds. We raised a record £1,045 for the JPK Project by serving 73 ploughmans and selling approx.70 pots of chutney and jams and about 500 trays of plants. My grateful thanks go to Helen Hubble who produces the delicious food without any fuss or panic! Roger supplies the Pimms and other drinks.Bernard Norris arranges the supply of plants. Rita Norris and Audrey Joy work tirelessly on the day selling and transporting plants by wheel-barrow to cars. I couldn’t manage without Roger as car park attendant in our front garden. Lenham Enhancement support us with the purchase of plants for their village troughs and planters. In addition to ticket sales I received in excess of £100 in generous donations from people who couldn’t attend. A very big thank you to everybody who helped make this such a pleasurable and worthwhile occasion.

Olympic Torchbearer’s Community Event

Number of tickets required: Adults:_________________ Children:__________________

Please return to Amanda in the Parish Offi ce (located in the Village Hall) for your chance to be one of the 300 people enjoying this unique Community Event.

With the kind co-operation of the businesses in Tenacre Court and The Roebuck Business Park we aim to cordon off an area specifi cally for residents with live entertainment including face painting, young magician Sam Keene and a band. Food is courtesy of The Red Lion in Lenham who will be organising a bbq, hog roast and a curry stall along with teas and coffees. Harrietsham Veterinary Practice will be holding an open day event which I am sure the children will enjoy. This community event will begin at 4.30pm and fi nish at 7.00pm following the passing of the Torch.

As the volume of people wishing to witness this unique event is unknown, the Parish Council have decided to limit this occasion with a ‘Ticket Only’ event which will be open to 300 Harrietsham residents. These tickets will be issued on a ‘fi rst come, fi rst served’ basis.

If you would like the chance to be part of this event, please complete the form, which is at the bottom of the page, and return to the Parish Offi ce. Tickets will then be issued to the fi rst 300 people who apply. The Olympic Flame can also be viewed from the verges between Downlands and Lenmead on the south side of the village as traffi c travelling from Maidstone to Ashford will not be stopped. Maidstone Borough Council will be helping to marshal these areas. The Parish Council would still be very grateful for any assistance that can be offered with regards to marshalling the com-munity event area, and we would like to thank the people who have already volunteered their services.

If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the Clerk at the Parish Offi ce on 850089.

From the EditorYou will see that this month’s edition is more colourful than usual; in the centre, so you can tear it out and keep it, is a photographic round-up of the Jubilee events in the village. The village photograph was taken from the church tower by GoWest Photography who have kindly given their permis-sion for us to reproduce it here; if you would like to buy a copy of it or any of their other photographs of the day then visit their website atwww.gowestphotography.co.uk/ and follow the links to Galleries/Events/2012. Their photos on the other side of the centre sheet are marked with an asterisk; other photos have been provided by Alan and Lesley Riches and Ben Jones - thank you to them all. No sooner have we survived (and enjoyed!) the Jubilee celebrations than the Olympic Torch is heading this way - another once-in-a-lifetime event. If you want to be part of the event organised by the Parish Council on the day then turn to p. 48 now, as places have to be restricted; if you prefer to go to a barbecue and special Olympic Quiz at The Roebuck that evening then see p. 39.

No ‘Hidden Harrietsham’ article from James this month; having just moved house, he’s temporarily swapped his pen for a paintbrush and screwdriver, but he will be back just as soon as he’s able. Hope you’ll be very happy in your new place, James! Meanwhile we have an excellent feature from Rod, all about Gary and Martin’s marathon snooker match; did they break the existing record? Turn to p. 18 and fi nd out!

Believe it or not the school ‘summer’ holidays will soon be upon us; the Playscheme will once more be running, this time back at the Village Hall. If you don’t already have details of it then see p. 46 for who to contact. If you are going away at any time and are concerned about leaving your house then perhaps you’d be interested in Neighbourhood Watch; PCSO Dave Rowley writes about this scheme on p. 44. So much community spirit was in evidence over the Jubilee weekend, I’m sure this would work really well across Harrietsham.

Enjoy the summer!Rosi Taylor

Front coverThis month’s bright cover has been provided by Riley, Ella, Olivia, Millie, Genevieve, Fern, Alisha, James, Tyrone and Stuart from Harrietsham Primary School - more details on p. 9.

Parish Council NewsSummer PlayschemeThe Parish Council Playscheme will take place from Monday 23rd July to Friday 3rd August and will be held in the Village Hall. If you would like to register with the scheme, please contact either Janetta Sams on 01622 859412 or Amanda Broadhurst on 850089 (email [email protected]).

Rural Hedge Cutting The Parish Council has arranged this year’s hedge cutting service for the week commencing the 15th October. If you wish to have your name added to the list, please contact the Clerk. Please note that you will still need to add your name to the list, even if you have used the service in the past.

Olympic Torchbearer’s Event As you all probably know, we are fortunate to have been selected to host the Olympic Torch on 19th July as it travels through the Southeast of England on its way to London for the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games. It will begin at Downlands at 18.19 and fi nish at Lenmead at approximately 18.40 before moving off to Leeds Castle.

Bearing in mind that the Olympics last came to the UK in 1948, this is a once in a lifetime event, therefore the Parish Council proposes to make it one residents of Harrietsham can enjoy as VIP’s. (Cont. overleaf)

Bill’s Safari Supper People taking part in the Safari Supper on Saturday 9th June voted at the fi nale for the local good cause that should benefi t from the amount raised. Harrietsham in Bloom received two-thirds of the votes in competition with the Village Hall and the Harrietsham History Society. Special mention was made of the hard work carried out by Harrietsham in Bloom’s volunteers and the much appreciated planters and troughs that add so much colour to the village.

£272 was raised, boosted by additional generous contributions and by a “heads and tails” game run by Dave Verga and won by Gwyneth Thurgood. Yvonne and Tim Grimes hosted the fi nale at the end of an evening full of excellent food and good humour.

The next Bill’s Safari Supper will be in the Autumn with the date being announced in September. If you would like to know more about these suppers with a view to taking part, please e-mail me at [email protected]

Cont. from p. 42KCC became his employer when he moved here in 1970 and he was en-gaged in purchasing and supplies mainly serving the local schools and he stayed there until his retirement in 1982.

Bill was one who could ‘speak his mind’ and remained courteous and inter-ested in all that was going on with ever a quest for knowledge. His honesty and integrity was clear in all that he did and Margaret refl ects that his care of his family was always uppermost in his mind.

I will long remember a man who lived a full and energetic life, and who was very good company.

Behind it lies a simple idea, and a central value shared by millions ofpeople around the country, that getting together with your neighboursto take action can cut local crime and that Neighbourhood Watchcan create a better place to live, work and play. NeighbourhoodWatch is not just about reducing burglary fi gures – it’s about creating communities that care. It brings local people together and can make a real contribution to improving their lives.

The activity of Watch members can foster a new community spirit and a belief in the community’s ability to tackle problems. At the same time, you feel secure, knowing your neighbours are keeping an eye on your property.

There are other benefi ts to Neighbourhood Watch schemes too. You could become familiar with crime prevention ideas that will help keep your home and belongings safe. And the extra security that belonging to a Neighbour-hood Watch scheme offers might even mean that you can get a premium discount from your insurance company.

If you would like to know more about Neighbourhood Watch schemes in your area, or you wish to start a up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in your area, please call PCSO Dave Rowley on 101 or [email protected]

Neighbourhood WatchNeighbourhood Watch, sometimes known as Home Watch, is one of the biggest and most successful crime prevention initiatives ever.

Peter Brown welcomed Dr Ben Croxford, the Historic Environment Record Offi cer from The Heritage Conservation Department of the Kent County Council, who gave a very interesting illustrated talk about the work of his organisation and the information which can be found on the HER web site www.kent.gov.uk/ExploringKentsPast Ben concluded his talk by answering members’ questions.

Peter mentioned the society is currently without a secretary as unfortunately Beth Mercer was not able to take on the role after all, having just success-fully landed a job which involves a considerable amount of travelling. If anyone is interested in assisting us with this position please contact me on 851075. The committee is currently sorting out a programme for the rest of this year which hopefully will include a talk on Tithe Maps of Harrietsham for the September meeting and possibly a Historic Walk around Harrietsham in July or August. Details of these events will be sent to all members as soon as they have been fi nalised and will also be placed on the village web site at www.harrietshamvillage.org.uk The society now has 36 members; if you are interested in joining us please contact me for further information.

Women’s Institute It was with sadness that we received news of the death of Carol Newey. Carol was a popular and very active committee member and will be greatly missed. Our condolences go out to her family.

At the June meeting there was a lovely display of members’ Royal memorabilia. These items were discussed along with our experiences of past royal occasions. An enjoyable afternoon.

The July meeting will be at Westmount and will include our Jubilee tea, book stall, swap stall and a raffl e.

Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you sow.

William Campbell 1921 - 2012Having known ‘Bill’ for many years casually my knowledge of him grew when I joined the University of the Third Age U3A in Maidstone. He and I travelled together to the main meetings and also to the History group within the organisation. He was a longstanding member of U3A and only a very short time ago he gave a lecture on the Battle of Waterloo, of which he had considerable knowledge and to which he added by thorough research. We did not need a microphone when Bill was speaking!

Bill and Margaret married in January 1946 and at the beginning of this year they celebrated sixty six years of marriage. They have two daughters, Elizabeth and Jane, two grandchildren and one great grandchild, Alexia Grace.

Having been born and brought up in Portrush in Northern Ireland Bill joinedthe Army in 1940 and was commissioned into the Royal Ulster Rifl es. He volunteered for the Indian Army and as a young Lieutenant joined the Mahratta Light Infantry. He spoke Urdu with his Indian Troops and it was a source of some pride and pleasure that even in his latter years he could still converse with our Urdu speaking residents in the Village, as Mr Sian in the Village shop knows.

After serving on the North West Frontier in Persia (as it was known then) he returned to England in 1945 and again joined the Royal Ulster Rifl es. After a few years he transferred to RAOC in which he served rising to the rank ofLt. Colonel until he retired in 1970. The family then moved to Harrietsham.

He was an active member of the Church and became a Church Warden. For many years he was a Reader and he also served on the PCC. He was very proud and keen on the Tear Fund which he set up following a talk from a missionary working in Africa about a national disaster there.

The Fund made a considerable amount of money and for many years he ran the Bottle Stall at the Church Fete which was held either at The Rectory or on the Booth Field. Bill would encourage people to give him bottles for his stall and it was always well supplied with a variety of bottles!

Network, our Village Magazine, was served by Bill as Advertising Manager for many years and committee meetings were often held in Margaret and Bill’s house in the early eighties when Margaret was Secretary. Amongst his many talents was photography and he was a member of a camera club and he always judged the photographic section of the Gardening Society Annual Show in the Village. (Cont. on p. 44)

Harrietsham NetworkHarrietsham Wives Group20 members visited the wonderful Tram Hatch Gardens at Charing Heath on Wednesday 6th June; the weather was very kind and our host, Pam Scrivens, gave us a very informative conducted tour, followed by yummy home-made cakes and tea or coffee.

Thank you to those members who volunteered to man the kitchen at the Village Hall for two days whilst the Neighbourhood Plan was discussed.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 4th July at 8pm in the Booth Hall when speaker Helen Jenkins will tell us about ‘Osteopathy’. There will also be a bring-and-buy stall and raffl e.

On Wednesday 1st August at the earlier time of 7pm members will meet at Jackie and Roger Bevan’s house for an evening barbecue, we thank them in advance for their hospitality. Please bring a plate, wine glass, cutlery and an item to cook on the barbecue; salad, pudding and liquid refreshment will be provided by Jackie and committee members.

To any members not well at present, we hope you will feel better soon.

Any enquiries to Audrey Joy (Chair) on 850806 or Rosi Taylor (Secretary) on 851701.

Tram Hatch Gardens are open to the public on Sunday 8th July, 1 – 5pm, as part of the National Gardens Scheme. For details of this and other gardens open under the scheme visit www.ngs.org.uk

ThanksOn behalf of the Fish Scheme Committee I would like to thank Joyce and Ken Nugent for the many years that they have delivered Network Magazine to the residents of the Garden of England. This involves some 60 maga-zines which is a big commitment. At the same time I am extremely grateful to them for fi nding their replacement, and we welcome and thank Mr. and Mrs. Cooper for taking on this task.

This milestone year, an impressive 980 people joined to raise funds for the Hospice, which provides quality care and support locally to patients with life limiting conditions and their families. It is estimated they collectively raised more than £25,000, which has delighted organisers.

The walk covered a pretty 8.5 mile circular route across the North Downs and through privately owned bluebell woods within the Torry Hill Estate. As usual, the Hospice’s Patron, Lady Monckton, attended to meet and encourage walkers.

She said afterwards: “The Bluebell Walk is a popular and very important date in our fundraising calendar. Once again, I say a big thankyou to all those who took part or who sponsored others to do so. I hope everyone enjoyed the walk and feels proud of themselves for the vital contribution they have made towards helping the Hospice continue to care for people at a time when they most need it. As we receive less than a third of our funding from statutory sources, we rely heavily on such generosity. I am sure that Diana, Princess of Wales, who opened the Hospice all those years ago, would be immensely proud of the efforts and achievements of staff and volunteers that have made this walk all that it is today.”

The Heart of Kent Hospice is the local hospice caring for seriously ill people and their families from Maidstone, Aylesford and surrounding area. The Hospice is a specialist palliative care unit whose purpose is to provide expert care and support for patients with advanced cancer, motor neurone disease, or other life- threatening illnesses where curative treatment is no longer possible. At any one time the Hospice cares for approximately 350 patients through its range of services, including In-Patients Unit, Day Therapy, Family Services and Community Services.

Care and support is also given to families of the patients, including their children. Hospice care is free to those who need it, and this year £3 million is required to cover running costs, and with only 29% generated from statutory funding we continue to be heavily dependant on the generosity of our local community.

Bluebell Walk 2012Supporters, friends, volunteers and staff of the Heart of Kent Hospice pulled on their walking boots to take part in the 25th annual Bluebell Walk on Sunday 6th May. The fi rst walk was started by Bill Butler, who sadly is no longer with us. He was the inspiration and gave fantastic support for it throughout his life.

Thursday 19th JulyI’m sure by now everyone knows this is the date the Olympic Torch passes through Harrietsham. As it falls on a Quiz night the staff at the Roebuck are going to lay on a barbecue after the torch has passed and also a special Olympic Quiz with an increased jackpot to be won. So, if you don’t have tickets for the other events going on, or after the one at the Business Park (see p. 46) has fi nished, why not come along to the Roebuck for what promises to be a great evening! Look out for fl iers and posters with more details.

May FayreWow, what a wonderful day it turned out to be. The sun shone down on us all, and it was truly a perfect day. We took over £3,000 on the day and raised over £2,000 actual profi t. This will go towards laptops and playground equipment for the school. Thank you to everyone who supported us - parents, teaching staff and local residents. On behalf of the school we cannot thank you enough.

A Happy EndingA few mothers started impromptu rounders sessions for their daughters; their daughters’ friends wanted to join in, and so it grew. But in the process they had inadvertently damaged the cricket square! As you can imagine, this could have been the end of the rounders sessions, but once their error had been pointed out they agreed to move to the out-fi eld, and Alex from the Cricket Club not only volunteered to make good the damage to the cricket square but also offered to mark out a rounders pitch. What a triumph for common sense and community spirit!

Cont. from p. 37Roses, besides being a bit late, continue to make good growth and are blooming well. Feed plants once the fi rst fl ush has fi nished and spray with rose clear to control black spot and pests. Spray them in the evening to avoid harming bees. Cut back and feed delphiniums and lupins to encourage a second fl ush of smaller blooms. It’s also time to sow winter pansy and wallfl ower seed ready for after the summer (if we see one).

Continue to keep on top of the weeds and hope that soon we can break out the barbecue stuff and the garden furniture!

Outing to the CoastHarrietsham Parish Council and Fish Scheme

Our last Village Outing was in 2005 when Vivienne Hammick representing the Parish Council co-organised a trip to the seaside. In this special Jubilee year and in memory of Vivienne and her hard work on behalf of the Council, a similar day is being organised.

On Thursday 9th August we will be travelling to Herne Bay for a mid morn-ing break, allowing a short walk along the pier or the seafront and then trav-elling on to Sandwich. Here there will be time for lunch and a walk around the town and for those interested a visit to the Salutation Gardens which are close to where the coach will be parked. (You can read more about the Salutation Gardens in the Gardening Society article on p. 37).

* Did you come with us in 2005? * Are you retired? * Do you have time available during the week? * Would you like an arm to lean on? * Would you like to travel a little more? * Or would you just like to hear more about this special Outing?

For those who come on this Outing there will be no cost factor for the coach journey, but any other expenses will be met by each individual.

For further information do please ring Marjorie Darby on 850657 or Anthony Hammick on 859268.

Christian Message

We are the Champions! As the Olympics draw near, athletes everywhere will be rigorously training each day, checking their diet and getting an early night or two. It’s so exciting to see young people trying their best to achieve but, of course, only one person can win each event. With two older brothers to try to keep up with, as a child I spent my formative years calling out ‘wait for me...’ and soon learned to be very fast on my feet. As a result I was well practised in running, jumping and climbing and even at primary school I realised that I could run faster and jump higher than my peers. At senior school I longed to be netball captain. I was skinny and quick - but not tall. All the netball team members seemed huge - and more than just a little scary! I became tennis captain, hockey captain and athletics captain - not bad for a shy child. Running and jumping remained my forte and I sprinted my way through my teenage years and ran for my school in county cross-country events. I even inherited my big brother’s ill-fi tting running spikes - how proud I was of that pair of shoes! If the feeling of them pushing into the ground and gripping as I strode on was magical, the adrenalin rush of regularly winning events was even more incredible! As if intended to ensure I kept some humility, however, the netball ‘goal’ stayed fi rmly out of my reach and I was rarely allowed to play, was never picked for the team and not even chosen for the reserve team. Such a mis-match between aspirations and ability! I recently watched four synchronised swimmers on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. They seemed pretty amazing to me but they tearfully reported on how they didn’t quite make it into the Olympic squad. How much more their pain must have been than mine, after years of diligent and persistent training on their part, all for the disappointment of rejection. So what of us who don’t win, don’t make the team or who can’t even run the race? With God there simply isn’t a race to run. Christianity is not a performance, in fact, as far as I know, it is the only religion that is not performance based (but I’d be happy to be corrected on that one!). God’s ‘event’ includes every single one of us if we only ask him into our lives. Whilst we fall far short of his standards, he wants us in his ‘squad’, and there will be such a celebration on that victorious day when he returns to claim his winning team. Obviously if we want to serve God we will want to follow his training regime: he wants us to live a life of faith, following his rules, and has set these out

growing, seeds not germinating, tomato plants were stunted and blue with cold, all of these things would undoubtedly lead to late production of all of our fl owers and vegetables.

David then introduced the evening’s speaker Mr Steve Edney, Head Gardener of The Salutation Gardens at Sandwich which he has been restoring over the past 6 – 7 years with his team of gardeners at a cost of over £2 million.

The gardens surround a Grade I listed house which was designed and built in 1912; the Architect was Sir Edwin Lutyens and the gardens were designed by Gertrude Jekyll. The property was originally owned by three brothers who unfortunately all died as bachelors and the house and gardens were left to rot for a period of about 30 years. The present owners purchased the property as a family home and set about the restoration work; although they were not keen gardeners they were determined to restore everything as much as possible to its original glory. The Gardens were offi cially reopened in 2007 by Monty Don and since then have gone from strength to strength with just over 30,000 visitors recorded in the past year. More information on the gardens can be found on their web site at www.the-secretgardens.co.uk

The members’ competition for the evening for a decorated cupcake to celebrate the Jubilee was won by Helen Hubble (12 points), 2nd Elizabeth Welchman (10 points) and 3rd Barbara Incledon (8 points); three other members submitted entries and were each awarded 4 points.

The next meeting of the society is on Tuesday 17th July, which will be a talk on Lilies by Mr. H Howland. Copies of the schedule for the 67th Annual Show (Saturday 8th September) are available from The Post offi ce, the hairdressers and the Glebe Surgery as well as the village website, www.harrietshamvillage.org.uk The Society still has plenty of room for new people to join, if anyone is interested in joining, the contact details can be found on our notice board in the Village Hall or on the village website.

Gardening Tips for JulyFor a gardener, this year can be said to be testing to say the least. With all these damp days and cold nights nothing seems to want to grow. Vegetables from seed have had poor germination with root crops being particularly bad. It is time to plant out leeks and continue to attempt to get carrots and salad crops to grow. Feed tomatoes on a weekly basis with a liquid tomato feed once the fi rst fruit has set. (Cont. overleaf)

Informal ServicesThe next informal service is at St John’s Church, Harrietsham, at 6.30pm on Sunday 29th July, when we will be enjoying worship, praise and an informal communion together.

We are delighted that Christo Thiardt will be able to join us and we will be considering the Beatitude: Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Refreshments are served after every service and we look forward to seeing you there. At each informal service in 2012 we are looking at the Sermon on the Mount in St Matthew’s Gospel. During the following months we will be considering: August No service September Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. October Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. November Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteous ness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven; and we will refl ect on the Beatitudes December No service.

Please do look out for posters and magazine entries for more details as the year goes on but if you need any more information, or a lift to the service, please ring 859442.

in black and white in his manual (just go to Exodus 20:1–17 and Deuteronomy 5:4–21).

How straight-forward his commandments sound but how hard they can be to follow, especially remembering his newest commandment to love one another, when those around us might be excluding us, hurting us or even plotting against us.

God knows that we will fall short of his standards, that we often fall at the fi rst hurdle, and can’t reach the fi nish line unblemished, which is why he sends his Holy Spirit to help us to keep on the right track.

If we simply ask him to forgive our sins and follow him, we will reach the ultimate goal so that we will all be winners of the very best prize possible.

Harrietsham in Bloom VolunteersThe new planter is now in place at Willow Close, our thanks to those villagers who contributed to the cost and the maintenance team who built it. Luckily we were able to fi nd a home for the tractor tyre from inside the old planter, the Sunrise Day Nursery has made use of it as a little garden for the children to plant up; our thanks to the Manager, Helen Cole, for making disposal possible.

Having used drought-resistant plants this summer it has hardly stopped raining, the fl owers have struggled to bloom without sun. We just cannot beat nature – this must be the wettest drought ever!

Unfortunately thieves and vandals have been active, taking plants and leaving gaps in some planters; sadly these events are beyond our control.

Thank you to Brian Hall for the spider plants he grew on our behalf, and thank you to everyone for your ongoing support.

Harrietsham Gardening SocietyThe meeting of the society on the 15th May was attended by over 40 members who were welcomed by the Chairman David Oversby who commented again on the problems with the unpredictable and unseasonal weather conditions. Since our last meeting in April when we had discussed the water shortages and the impending hose pipe ban and suggested things that could be done to combat this, there had been nothing but rain intermixed with hail and very cold strong windy conditions. World Record Shattered in HarrietshamI don’t think Gary Lux and Martin O’Neill will forget Harrietsham Club in a hurry. In fact I suspect they may have a few Harrietsham snooker table related nightmares for a long time….

The World Record for the longest snooker marathon match between two people (without a break for sleep), stood at just under 55 hours. Gary and Martin were aiming to set a new record with 72 hours continuous snooker (fi ve minute breaks were allowed per hour, which could be accumulated up to a maximum 20 minutes break per 4 hours of continuous play), with the aim of raising money for the Heart of Kent Hospice, where Gary’s mother Sue was admirably cared for, as tragically she was struck by cancer at a relatively early age and sadly passed away in August 2011. You can still donate to this great cause on www.justgiving.com/martin-oneill3737.

Jubilee Celebrations in the Church Our grateful thanks to all those who helped with decorating the church for the Jubilee. There have been many wonderful comments about the displays of fl owers etc.. Also our thanks to those who were at the church serving teas, coffee and biscuits from before lunch time to late evening.

Our home (Booth Field) fi xtures for July are as follows: 1st July v Mersham, 8th July v Twineham, and 22nd July v Harbledown. All matches are 2pm start, and if you fancy a picnic whilst the cricket is going on, please come along.

Onto the cricket proper, and HCC posted their fi rst league win (hav-ing lost by 5 runs in the fi rst game v Rodmersham followed by two abandoned games) of the season at Bearsted on 17th June. Winning the toss and batting fi rst, we were going along nicely at 69-0 until Alex Hubble (27) edged one behind. The following ball and Bijoy Puthoor ducked into a full toss, and the ball hit his head gear and fell onto the stumps. So 69-0 quickly became 69-2. The following over skipper Rod Martenstyn (36) got a lifter and top edged a pull shot to the keeper. The following ball another golden duck, this time Martin Jones. Wickets kept falling, and from 69-0 we were suddenly 87-8, a collapse of epic proportions. Dipu Pillai (15no) and Dave Wilson (11) man-aged to add some vital runs though, to see us eventually be bowled out for 112. Not a good score by any means, but at least we had runs on the board, and a bowling at-tack which would always give us a chance.

Onto Bearsted’s innings, and what a fantastic start for HCC. Hashim

Khan had the bit between his teeth, steaming in, and with the fi rst ball, bowled the perfect off stump yorker to oust Bearsted’s opening bats-man. In his following over Dipu Pillai pulled off a stunning slip catch off Hashim, and we now had Bearsted two down for 5 runs. Dipu then once again took a great catch, this time off his own bowling to remove their star batsman who looked on in disbelief (and the umpire too ducked and fell over, thinking the ball was going to hit him!). After Hashim and Dipu had fi nished their 9 over spells (Hashim a superb 5-29 and Dipu a miserly 1-9), 6 wickets had fallen. Bijoy Puthoor and Dave Wilson then chipped in with a wicket apiece, and a fantastic bit of fi elding by Bijoy saw a run out at a crucial stage. Bearsted’s fi nal pair then put up some stern resistance, as HCC were looking for the fi nal break-through to seal a memorable victory, and with the score on 95 (and still 17 short of our total), last minute replacement Thomas bowled, the batsman had a biff, didn’t quite hit it right, the ball scooped up, and Rod M running in from mid-off took the catch safely into his chest, and wild celebrations ensued, for what was a terrifi c, battling win. Even umpire David Oversby was smiling...

With the top 4 in the league getting promoted this season, we are fully intent on gaining back to back pro-motions (we currently lie 3 points off the top 3, having played the top two teams already). Fingers crossed for the remainder of the season.

The setting for their record attempt was the Harrietsham Club on West Street (above the Post Offi ce), starting at 8am on Tuesday 5th June and running all the way up to 8am on Friday 8th June. I managed to take some time off work (bar the Wednesday which ended with a fun fi lled evening with a Swedish barmaid, but that’s for next month’s Network, the over 18s version…) to support the players, as well as give them some needed distraction by playing snooker myself with other members on the second of the two club tables.

I turned up at around 12 noon on the Tuesday, 4 hours into the marathon (with Gary and Martin still in traditional snooker attire, waistcoats and bow ties), and remained there ‘til midnight by which time the lads had slipped into something a tad more comfy. They had plenty of food and drink supplies with them, as well as the support of their friends and families coming in and out of the club for a few hours at a time, and both local members and non-members of the club also popped in to cheer them on.

My next marathon check in was on Thursday at 4.15pm (by which time the Kent Messenger had arrived, cameras at the ready, and Gary and Martin had another stint with bow ties and waistcoats), with the previous world record beaten and now standing at 56 hours 15mins, and both Gary and Martin were still upright, albeit limping round the snooker table as opposed to running round like Hurricane Higgins, Whirlwind White or Rocket Ronnie O’Sullivan. It was physical fatigue to the feet, ankles and calf muscles, as opposed to sleep deprivation and mental tiredness/delirium, that had set in over the past 24 hours. However rather than being self-congratulatory about breaking the old world record, Gary and Martin were not satisfi ed with simply beating the record, they now wanted to annihilate it, and were therefore still going all out for completing their 72 hours target, in spite of their physical tiredness.

5 hours gone, 67 to go. Snooker attire at its best.Nice cue action Gary.

24.5 hours gone, 47.5 to go.No more bow ties and waistcoats.

Bill’s Round Charity Golfers It was the fi nest ever weather (not golf!) for the 30th. Bill’s Round Charity Event on 24th May at Weald of Kent Golf Course, Headcorn. 25 players took part (sadly, no ladies this time) under a cloudless sky in scorching conditions.

Prize Winners: The Bill’s Round Trophy was won for the fi rst time by Alec Richards with last time’s winner, Paul Davies, coming second and Mike Kingsman third. Two nearest the pin prizes went to Peter Shrimpton and Brian Briscoe.

£350 Raised for Charity: Alec chose the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity to benefi t from the funds raised, a healthy £350. He had worked at the hospital and been left with lasting impressions of the needs of the thousands of children who are cared for there every year.

Food and Drink: Bacon baps and tea/coffee were provided from 7.30 and roast beef with Yorkshire pudding followed by vanilla cheesecake and cof-fee were enjoyed by everyone at a 3pm lunch. The Next Bill’s Round Event: This will take place in November 2012 - full details will be announced nearer the time.

Harrietsham Cricket Club: From Jubilee to JubilationIn my 8 years of playing for Harrietsham Cricket Club, I don’t think I have seen as many people on the Booth Field while cricket was being played, as there were on Harrietsham’s Jubilee Celebration day (4th June). Credit must go to Tony Taylor and the Jubilee committee for having contingencies in place for moving events to the Harrietsham Village Hall and Booth Field (gardening, ferrets, organ, hog roast, rock bands, and more) at short notice. It certainly meant that the Booth Field had a great atmosphere about it, with people bringing their gazebos and tents, bottles of wine and picnics, some taking advantage of our own BBQ, as well as bopping along to some tunes provided by our DJ.

The cricket on the day was also entertaining, as it was decided to hold a pairs tournament made up of club players as well as some non-cricketer lo-cals, who let’s say, are not going to be the next Freddie Flintoff...the winners on the day were Harrietsham CC stalwart John Prosser and new boy Abdul

Supporters still kept coming in and out of the club, and the atmosphere was fantastic, and the standard of snooker still remained at a very good level, remarkable considering how tired Gary and Martin must have been, holding a cue up would be tiring enough for me by that stage, let alone potting balls! Once again I stayed till just gone midnight (63.5 hours gone, 8.5 hours to go), so that I could be up in the morning and be back at the club in time for their crowning glory.

So onto the fi nal Friday morning, and I turned up at 7.15am, so just 45 minutes to go, and the two world record holders were still standing, with family members still there in support. They kept going right up ‘til the last few seconds, and just as the clock timer said 72 hours had passed (8am), the fi nal black was sunk into the yellow corner pocket, right on cue (pardon the snooker pun) one might say, as we were wondering whether a new frame would have to be completed for the record to stand (even if it was over 72 hours).

There were applause and hugs all round for Gary and Martin, on an absolute Herculean effort of stamina and willpower, as well as snooker skill, and the never say die attitude to raising funds for a worthwhile cause. Harrietsham Club will always have its doors open to such worthy gents should they wish to better their record in the future! The fi nal score for those statisticians of you out there, was 136 frames played, 98 to 38 in Martin’s favour. I estimated that they must have made over 13,000 shots each, repetitive strain injury anyone…?

I should also thank all fellow club members who helped with the organisation of the event, in particular Jed Stone, Martin Edwards, Roger Crouch, Terry Jones, Linda Blainey and John Mackie, as without the club’s support, we would not be able to say “World Record Shattered in Harrietsham”. I am not sure if there are any other Harrietsham linked World Records out there, but if you know of any, I am sure Network Editor Rosi Taylor would like to hear about them!

It was a pleasure to meet many new faces in the club, both local, and those friends and families of Gary and Martin who came to support. It was nice to hear complimentary comments from those who had not ventured to Harrietsham before, such as “what a nice little club you have here”, as well as “what a lovely little village Harrietsham is, with a great community feel to it” after I had showed them a copy of June’s Network edition (which included their snooker précis article).

Finally, many congratulations to Gary and Martin on a marvellous achievement, I still can’t believe they were able to stay awake, let alone play snooker continuously for 72 hours with only 5 minutes break every hour. I sincerely hope they achieve their fundraising targets.

Please donate as generously as you can to the Heart of Kent Hospice cause on www.justgiving.com/martin-oneill3737.

For those of you who missed the children’s singing in the church (in which case you missed a treat!) , here are the words they sang:

Since your coronation we just knew you’d be greatYou’re wise and loyal and true

And so this Jubilee we raise a fl ag in the airRed, white and blue

This is your Diamond JubileeFor sixty years you’ve been the Queen

And so our joyful song will be‘God save the Queen!’

GOD SAVE OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN!LONG LIVE OUR NOBLE QUEEN!

SEND HER VICTORIOUS!HAPPY AND GLORIOUS!

Diamond Jubilee CelebrationsMost of the feedback from people who attended our event has been very positive; this is particularly pleasing as we were forced by the weather to rearrange everything. As it turned out when compared with the day before and after, the weather in the afternoon and evening was very kind to us. Looking back, some of the items I particularly enjoyed were: seeing the Church resplendent with its village bunting; the beautiful fl ower festival together with the children singing the Jubilee song to a packed Church; the Dutch Street Organ outside the village Hall; and of course, the guitar solo of the National Anthem followed by the lighting of the beacon.

This was a village event which just would not have been possible without a lot of people providing their help and encouragement. My personal thanks must go to the organising committee of Peter Brown, David Nottage, Liz Holland, Alan Laffan, Rosi Taylor and Peter and Michelle Saunders. With particular thanks to the Church Wardens, the congregation at the Kingdom Hall for allowing the use of their car park if necessary, our local bands AK47 and BlackShot21 and all those with classic cars and combine harvesters who braved the rain to join us. A special mention to Jon Holland and Barry Matthews who with me formed the beacon lighting party on the Church Tower. Last but not least to Stephen Morris for allowing us to perform a test burn of the beacon on the drive outside his house.

Short Mat Bowls18th May - Marden away - we just couldn’t manage the mats (or the fl oor) and although we enjoyed the evening we lost by 32-64 points !At home on the 24th and it was a visit by Hempstead Valley. On our own mats we did well with a win by 55-41 points. No doubt they will seek to reverse this when we visit them on the 8th JUNE.Revenge it was for they beat us by 56-76 on their mats . It was the fl oorreally (I understand that Dreamland Margate are looking to rebuild thewooden roller coaster - well they should try this fl oor!!). No sour grapesbut it is better when we can play on a level surface. On 10th June some 19 members enjoyed a get-together at our club meal at the Weald of Kent Golf Club at Headcorn. Good food, good company made for an enjoyable day.Still to come, Marden and then Joydens Wood at home to fi nish our friendlies until the winter starts them again.

Harrietsham Whist Club

The winners of the Whist Drive held on 1st June were Lorna Flisher and George Booth. We had another good evening with 34 people playing. Once again the refreshments were wonderful and everybody had a good time.

The next Whist Drive will be on 6th July at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. This will be the last one of the season, the new season starts on 14th September.

We hope to see you all whenever you can come. We would like to thank all our members for their continued support over the last year.

Community BuntingOnce again Harrietsham came to the rescue after a plea went out for white sheeting. Liz Holland, Sharon Prior and I were presented with beautiful bed linen from different homes in the village and at times it seemed a shame to cut them up as they seemed so crisp and new. Over the course of a few weeks approx 1,000 triangles were cut, and over 350 metres of bunting was sewn together. The Parish Council, along with the PTFA, funded any costs involved so many thanks for that extra funding. The fi rst occasion for the bunting to be displayed was at the School’s Jubilee Street Party in the playground, it looked amazing. It was so lovely when the children came out to play; they were trying to fi nd their own triangular designs. Liz, Sha-ron and myself left the bunting up for the village May Fayre. By this time it had sagged rather a great deal so the 350 metres has probably grown in length. The three of us then arranged to dress the church for our village jubilee celebrations on bank holiday Monday. With the help of Jon Holland it was secured from the church tower and continued to drape our wonderful church. I do hope most of you managed to see it in its fi nest hour. Thank you Liz for the idea in making these communal strands of togetherness, it became a true community based project.

Jill Bishop

Harrietsham Jubilee CelebrationsI for one would just like to add my appreciation to the villagers who organ-ised this event. I know only too well how diffi cult it is and how many hours you must have put in to make it a great success. Yes it would have been nice if the weather had been kinder but we do not have any control over the rain and cold, but it really didn’t ruin the day. It was so nice to see everyone and to be able to meet, chat and relax. So thank you Your Majesty for giving us the day off and for the last 60 years. Jill Bishop

LenARA Diamond Jubilee DayLenara had a stall with Guess the Weight of the cake, which was a fruit cake decorated for the Diamond Jubilee;150 guesses were made and it raised £78 for the local charity Emilia’s Little Heart in Lenham. The cake weighed 7lb 9 1/4 oz and the nearest guess was 7lb 8oz which was made by two ladies, the eventual winner was drawn by Gez the Town Crier and it was Mrs Ann Still from Harrietsham. A brilliant day was had by all.

Harrietsham NetworkHarrietsham Club Open DayIt was nice to see several new faces join us at the Harrietsham Club Open Day on Saturday 16th June. It was also a pleasant surprise to welcome back Gary Lux and Martin O’Neill (the world record snooker marathon champs) who presented the club with a trophy for hosting the record event. We look forward to seeing them again soon.

We hope everyone who came to the Club enjoyed the day, as well as the free pool, snooker, and tasty BBQ that was on offer; I know I did, as well as enjoying a few drinks...

We are aiming for another open day, probably in August, further details will appear in Network in due course. Membership still remains at £7 for the year, and we are open in the evenings Monday to Saturday. A game of pool costs a mere 50p, and we have two snooker tables, and the cost for an hour of snooker is around £1.70. We also have a dartboard for any of you arrows fans.

Swadelands SchoolAnnual Awards EveningThis took place on 17th May at a packed Mercure Hotel at Hollingbourne. It was very much a ‘night at the Oscars’, being a celebration of the pupils’ individual and team achievements over the last year. The organisation in getting the right pupils to the right place, in the right order, at the right time was fi rst class, and it was heartening to see the obvious pride with which the teachers introduced and described their pupils.

The guest speaker was Jenny Pacey the Olympic bobsleigher and world class athlete who provided the inspirational keynote address. She then made herself available to talk with pupils and pose with them for photo-graphs.

LettersThanks must surely go to the organ-isers of our village Jubilee event. It was very pleasant to wander between the venues meeting friends and neighbours from the village on a relaxing day.

However, I failed to see the connec-tion to the “Royal Diamond Jubilee” apart from the bunting. Of course, the tradition of these occasions is the trusty “street/village” party. Why, I wonder, had this not been chosen? This suggestion I’m sure would have brought forward many helping hands with ideas and skills.

Nevertheless, it was a village gathering that was appreciated, thank you.

Jackie Everitt

A big THANK YOU to the Parish Council - especially Tony Taylor and all the volunteers/stall holders etc. for making our Jubilee Day go so well (in spite of the weather). It certainly seemed well attended throughout the day right through until the lighting of the beacon. Well done to all.

Ann and Brian Rust

A BIG BUNTING THANK YOU to all those who made a fl ag for our Com-munity Bunting… all 400 and more metres of it! It made a great sight strung all over the outside of the Church on Jubilee day and across

the playground at the School Fayre and it’s Harrietsham’s to keep and to use from now on! Huge thank yous to Jill Bishop and Sharon Prior for their sewing skills used to put this keepsake together. In future, if you are having a party or event and would like to use the bunting for decorating, just contact one of us (my number is 858081) and we will be more than happy for it to be used. It comes in 25 and 50 metre lengths.

Why did I get involved in the Jubilee day? For 2 main reasons: to make happy memories for our children of an historic occasion (I can remember the Silver Jubilee) and, equally, to bring our community together – young and old, royalist and republican, school and church, newcomers and vintage villagers… I think it achieved these aims on the day and I would love to think such a community day could happen again, (with or without a royal peg to hang it on!). If this is how you feel please let me know. And look up www.thebiglunch.com and see if you think we could do this as a village?

Again big thank yous to all who helped make the 4th June 2012 a memorable day for Harrietsham, especially all those who brought along interesting cars and combine harvesters! And of course many thanks to Tony and Rosi and the Jubilee Committee.

Rehman, congratulations to them. I hope those at the Booth Field were entertained with the cricket, as well as our DJ and BBQ.

Nothing was

(Cont. overleaf)

Cont.

Harrietsham History SocietyThe fi rst meeting of the Society took place on the 21st of May at St. John’s Church. This was attended by 32 people who all completed their member-ship application and became the fi rst members of the society.

(Cont. on p. 44)

Cont.

Olympic Torchbearer’s Community Event

Name:_____________________________________________

Address: _________________________________________________

_________________________________________________ Email address:_______________________________________
