Welcome to the 71st season of Children’s Theatre of Charlotte!

Our legacy – and our future – is built on providing our region with theatre and education programs that transform and inspire young people.

There is exciting work ahead of us this season. We will finalize our new strategic plan, laying the foundation for our work over the coming years. Our participation in the EMCArts New Pathways Incubating Innovation will continue to expand our thinking about how we approach our future. The Kindness Project, a collection of three new works based on books, will begin to come to life on our stages this season with Last Stop on Market Street and A Sick Day for Amos McGee. The Second Story Project, a collaboration with Actor's Theatre of Charlotte and playwright Steven Dietz, also takes the stage with our production of The Ghost of Splinter Cove.

A new season of exciting theatre education programs is ready to launch, providing young people with a wide range of classes to expand their horizons, both in theatre and in life.

Our extraordinary staff, working with a team of inspired and engaged board leaders, will be the catalyst for a well-rounded and successful season.

Thank you for joining us!

Thousands of people come together to make this your children’s theatre: artists, staff, board members, ENCORE! and other volunteers, community supporters, audiences, students, schools, and our donors, who take the important step of making a philanthropic investment in the amazing work of Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. We couldn’t be more appreciative of the teamwork involved to ensure this valuable community asset continues to thrive.

Our board is honored to be associated with a nationally-recognized organization serving young people with exceptional live theatre and education experiences. The imaginative approach to creating these programs ensures more than 60,000 school students attend performances at greatly-reduced cost and that scholarships are available for those families who need them in order to participate. Sensory-friendly performances create a welcoming environment for many. Theatre 360 provides access to and extended theatre experience for all children and families.

Thank you for being here with us. We hope you’ll join us often this season!

Florence KimChairman, Board of Directors

From the Board of Directors

With this season, Children’s Theatre of Charlotte launches a unique endeavor, The Kindness Project. We’ve commissioned three world-premiere plays– two this season, Last Stop on Market Street and A Sick Day for Amos McGee, and The Invisible Boy in our 2019-2020 season– that feature kindness as the central theme. We’ve invested in this project because we recognize the power simple acts of kindness hold. And we did this for one simple reason: to spread kindness wherever we can and to encourage children to act kindly toward others.

We truly believe kindness is a team effort, and we hope you’ll join us.

Share your stories of kindness: Visit ctcharlotte.org/kindness

Maybe you brought a neighbor’s newspaper to his or her door. Perhaps you volunteered in a classroom or paid for the coffee of the person in line behind you. Maybe you've seen someone else do something kind. Share your story.

Spread kindness: Use #CTCKindnessProject

We want kindness to spread beyond our stage. So, in your travels, or wherever life takes you, take photo and upload it explaining how you wove kindness into your day. Reach out to our Box Office if you're interested in getting a free Kindness Project bracelet to wear as a reminder to live kindly. They're awesome.

One small gesture can change the world.

Allie Joseph (Matilda) is ecstatic to be playing her dream role at age 11! Allie has previously been seen on the Mainstage at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: The Musical. When she’s not on stage, Allie can most often be found on the softball field (Go Sharks!). Allie would like to thank her teachers and mentors at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte’s School of Theatre Training (SOTT), her friends and her family for their love, support and countless rides to

rehearsals! Allie is in the 6th grade and is home schooled.

Annabel Lamm (Amanda) is thrilled to return to Children’s Theatre of Charlotte! Previous credits include Scrooge the Musical and Seussical the Musical. Annabel has also appeared in numerous productions at Central Piedmont Community College’s Halton Theatre and Matthews Playhouse. She is a 6th grader at South Charlotte Middle School and a Jr. Company member at Jami Masters School of Dance. Annabel would like to thank Adam, Ron, and Drina for giving her

this great opportunity, her family for their endless support, and especially her mum for driving her to/from many long rehearsals and still believing she is an angel, even when she is a revolting child and a little bit naughty!

Director's NotesWhy are Roald Dahl's stories so timeless? He clearly created stories that continue to resonate with children of all ages. Each world he creates to frame the story is unique, ridiculous, and honest. There is something uniquely wonderful about a world where elevators can fly, or a fox can outwit a horrible farmer, or a giant and a young girl can save the world. There is something about the ridiculous and grotesque that somehow elevates, defines and punctuates the truth of the world. And always, that truth is authentically viewed from the perspective of a young person, like Matilda. Roald Dahl's granddaughter, Chloe, said of his work, "So many of his books revolve around child heroes changing the world through their own creative powers." Therein lies the power of Dahl's stories - they are written about young people…for young people.

While Matilda the Musical is certainly a story about a little girl who is a hero, it is also a story about a world that is failing some children. Matilda is five years old. Matilda is smart. Matilda is clever. Matilda is bullied. Matilda is different. What happens to the child with special needs? What happens to the extraordinary child who struggles because they need something more? What happens when Miss Honey tries to plead for Matilda to an administration unwilling to bend the rules in order to support her? Even more disturbing, what happens when Miss Honey stops trying? This creates a frightening world for a child to navigate. This is why Matilda is a hero. In her moment of greatest need she is not defending herself, but rather other young people. And she finds within herself the power to speak up. She conjures within herself the power to inspire a revolt. As Chloe Dahl says about her grandfather's stories - Matilda finds deep within herself the power to change the world. A storm can begin With the flap of a wing The tiniest mite packs the mightiest sting. With these words Matilda is empowering young people everywhere to not settle for something that is clearly wrong. That's not right, And if it's not right You have to put it right. In this moment Matilda becomes not just a hero, but a superhero.

Cast and creative teamJeannie Ware (Lavender) is happy to be back on Children’s Theatre of Charlotte stage. Her previous shows include Tarzan and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: The Musical. Other theatres she has performed at are Central Piedmont Community College and Matthews Playhouse of the Performing Arts. Jeannie is an avid reader and Roald Dahl is one of her favorite authors. It has been a dream of Jeannie’s to perform in Matilda since she first saw it on Broadway. Jeannie would like to thank

Ron Chisholm, Adam Burke, Drina Keen and the rest of the production staff for making this moment possible for her.

Holliday Grow (Hortensia) has always enjoyed singing, dancing and the stage! She is thrilled to be in this production for her debut at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte - as Matilda was the first Broadway show she ever attended at age 7. She has had many roles at Matthews Playhouse, performing in Bonnie and Clyde the Musical, James and the Giant Peach, and Junie B Jones the Musical. When she is not acting she also enjoys guitar and gymnastics.

Customer service

Here is a game families can play together. Two people face each other. One person becomes Mr. Wormwood, the other person becomes his dissatisfied customer. The customer complains about everything wrong with the item, and Mr. Wormwood can only deflect. For example, the customer says the car is rusty but Mr. Wormwood says it’s vintage. The person who keeps going the longest wins.

Meet the Author: Roald Dahl

Born in Llandaff, Wales in 1916 to Norwegian parents, Dahl was named after Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian who had been the first man to reach the South Pole just four years earlier.

He enlisted in the Royal Air Force at 23 years old. After sustaining injuries, he worked as an intelligence officer for MI6. In 1960 he helped invent the Wade-Dahl-Till valve, prompted by the need to alleviate head injuries endured by his young son.

While authoring many beloved children's books, Dahl also enjoyed success as a television writer including episodes on Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Tales of the Unexpected.

Questions for families

1. What does it mean to have freedom? Imagine you’ve been given a magic wand, and when you wave it, you will truly be free. What would that mean for you?

2. Throughout the musical, Matilda tells the “Story of the Escapologist.” While watching the musical, what similarities do you see in this story and Matilda’s story?

3. Musical theatre combines songs, spoken dialogue and dance. Each element helps tell the story. After watching the musical, did any one song stand out to you in particular? Which song was it and why?
