The Children's Museum's exhibitions and programs challenge a child to
reate, nvestigate, iscover and olve
The approach to learning applies hands-on activities as a
way for children to naturally use their curiosity and creativity.
To nurture a child's imaginative expression.
To provide avenues for a child to explore
themselves and the world through either self-guided or
directed activities.
To give a helping hand to a child in developing
a love for the quest.
To assist a child in developing life's problem solving tools.
At the centre of the approach to understanding is
Art Based Integrated Learning (ABIL) where art concepts and techniques are the vehicles used for a child to explore themselves and the surrounding world. Both the Museum's exhibitions and programs use the Ontario curriculum as a starting point and the cross-curricular connections of art concepts, techniques and tools not only help children gain fundamental skills and competence in art but also assists them with understanding the concepts, techniques and tools of the other disciplines being explored.
ur Philosophy:
ELPK (JK/SK): Exploration,
Experimentation & Creativity The Exploration, Experimentation, & Creativity workshop is made up of hands-on play activity where students acquire foundation skills and
concepts that assist in the development of their abilities to work with structures, simple machines, and role playing. Using the structure and mechanism modules the children will be introduced to using nuts and bolts, basic tools, and small and oversized building materials. The performing
arts will be explored using dress-up, puppets and role playing in the children’s theatre modules. Adult supervision is required and it is recommended that the visiting students be divided into 3 groups. There is no cost for adult supervision.
GR. 1: Discovering Structures A hands-on activity where students build it big and
discover the distinctive characteristics of shell, frame, and mass structures through geometric and organic forms. Students are introduced to building materials that will be used in future grades, such as K’nex, nuts & bolts,
picture building plans. Group work emphasized.
GR. 2: Move’n Things A hands-on activity where students explore simple mechanisms, their characteristics and the structures that support them. Examine gears, axles and other moving things! Group work emphasized.
GR. 3: Hands-On Stability Using the hands-on exhibits students build structures and mechanisms while exploring stability and how various forces, material shapes and connections affect stability. Group work emphasized.
GR. 4: Simple Machines: Using the Museum’s hands-on exhibits students explore the relationship between structures and mechanisms. Various functioning mechanical systems are created in this hands on workshop where team work is emphasized. Incorporates Medieval and other early
societal themes. Group work emphasized.

& the post and lintel system amongst others. Group work emphasized.
GR. 6: Exploring Motion & Electricity Using the Museum’s hands-on modules, students explore motion & circuitry using different structures, mechanisms and technologies! Students will create and test structures, machines, mechanical & electrical systems from primitive & modern origins. Group work emphasized.
GR. 7: Structural Strength & Stability Using the Museum’s hands-on exhibits students explore the relationship between structures and methods used
to create strength from internal & external sources. Groups will cooperatively work to devise, read and apply plans to build both small and oversized materials to create various models.
GR. 8: Structures & Mechanisms Students will explore in groups various structural and mechanical models by creating and applying plans to physically create them in both physical and virtual environments. Group work emphasized.

Super Sleuths A Hands-On
Students will become super sleuths as they uncover evidence and determine the
direction of the investigation!
Narrow the Field of Investigation by recreating the 3D profile of the investigation’s victim using professional field
materials.
Once the case has been identified, students will dive into a detective’s world by using professional
technologies and methods to obtain evidence to
analyze alongside of P.O.I. (persons of interest) files.
This hands-on workshop provides field model stations for students to explore in
order to identify, investigate, record and analyze evidence
including:
The Mock Incident Scene , a Digital Microscope Lab, Tire Track Analysis, a corporeal Medical Examination, a Video Surveillance Lab with Digital Facial Composite Sketching software to develop an A.P.B.
Through evidence & P.O.I. cross examination, students culminate the workshop with
presentations of their findings and provide an educated suggestion for the
proceedings of the case.
