SAFETY IS OUR TOP PRIORITY

Children’s safety is always our highest priority. Our products are designed and tested to comply with all applicable safety requirements in the countries where the products are sold. We also test all our children’s products at our own accredited test laboratory in Sweden, as well as at independent accredited test laboratories and institutes around the world.

IKEA fulfils the following safety criteria for children’s beds and mattresses around the world: Beds for the European market are tested by test laboratories in Europe and comply with European standard EN 716-1.

How are our children’s beds tested? All our children’s beds undergo several different tests to ensure they are safe to use. First, they are inspected for any protruding parts, loose parts or fittings, and sharp edges. Then, all gaps and openings are measured to ensure safety. The bed is tested with impact and pressure tests for strength, stability and durability and to ensure that the spindles will not twist or rotate from their position and create potentially hazardous openings. The bed base is also tested. For example, in a test for the European market, we subject the bed base to impact from a 10 kg weight that is dropped 1,000 times from five different positions.

The same or similar tests are made on bed bases for beds in all markets where we are active, but the tests may differ somewhat, depending on the specific requirements of the respective country.

1. Choose your materials. Choose between spring or foam. All materials are safe and hygienic of course, and both sides of the mattress can be slept on, which prolongs the life of the mattress. If you are unsure which to choose ask what type of mattress do you prefer to sleep on?

Spring: VYSSA spring mattresses are made with either pocket springs or Bonell springs. The spring construction allows air to flow freely, promoting good air circulation and a favourable sleeping climate.

Foam: All VYSSA foam mattresses use quality polyurethane or high resilience foam, which is well fitting, durable and has pressure-relieving qualities that provide your growing child with good support and a favourable sleeping climate. Both sides of our foam mattresses may be slept on, which prolongs their use.

Covers: All VYSSA covers are removable and machine washable to create a hygienic sleeping environment for your child. They are also well ventilated to allow for better air circulation. All our covers are soft against the child’s skin.

2. Identify individual needsSizeAre you buying a mattress for a children’s bed or an extendable bed? All VYSSA mattresses are available in both sizes. As the extendable beds “grows” with the child in three steps, the mattress comes in three pieces; just add on a part when you extend the bed.

• Time: How many years do you think your child will use the mattress? If you want to use the same mattress from the early years and well into childhood, a thicker and more durable mattress will provide better support as the child grows.

• Air circulation: All VYSSA children’s mattresses promote good air circulation, thanks to materials like egg-carton foam or pocket spring construction.

• Pressure relief: All VYSSA mattresses provide some pressure relief, because they are made with materials like pocket springs or high resilience foam.

3. Choose your mattressOn the following pages you will find all of our children’s mattresses on offer, along with detailed facts for each.

Bunk beds are safe and funChildren enjoy the fun and cosiness of a bunk bed. They also like moving around in bed after lights out. That’s why we have strict construction requirements and test all our bunk beds carefully, to make sure that they’re strong, durable and safe enough for your child.

Why a bunk bed?The best thing about a bunk bed is that it takes up less floor space than two single beds. Most children also experience a greater sense of security when they get to share a bed with a sibling or friend, hear someone else’s breathing or have a quiet talk before falling asleep.

What can you expect from our bunk beds? The safety of your child is our top priority. That’s why we fulfil all applicable safety requirements and testing standards. This is what you can expect from our bunk beds:

• Stable and durable construction made from non-harmful materials.• That the space between the guard rails has been dimen sioned to prevent a child from slipping through.• Evenly placed ladder steps to make climbing up and down easier• An opening, which decreases the risk of falling off the top bunk.• Steady slatted bases with sturdy attachments that keep the mattresses in place and prevent the top bunk from coming loose.

Children need a lot of sleep. It’s important for their physical and mental development. Check your child’s sleeping environment regularly to prevent accidents, so that both you and your child can get a good night’s sleep.

Here’s a checklist to guide you:• Always use two guard rails for the top bunk, no matter the age of your child. Children move around a lot when sleeping and could otherwise risk falling out of bed.• Children below the age of 6 years should not sleep in the top bunk as the safety standards for bunk beds are based on the average weight and size of a 6-year-old child.• Always use a mattress that is dimensioned for the bunk bed. The total mattress thickness may not pass the safety marking on/at the top of the ladder.• Always use a slatted base underneath the mattress and make sure it is securely fastened. This also applies if you want to use the beds separately.• Place the bunk bed on a rug and remove furniture and other surrounding items to prevent injury if your child falls.

• Ensure that your child always uses the ladder to climb into the top bunk, not chairs or other items.• Explain to your child that playing in and around the bed can be dangerous due to the risk of falling.• Avoid placing lamps close by the bunk bed. If you must, make sure that they are out of range for pillows and quilts to avoid fire hazards. Another alternative could be to use LED lighting, which doesn’t get hot.• Clamp lamps are not appropriate for use in a bunk bed, as they may cause a fire hazard if they come loose or your child forgets to put it back after detaching.• Remember to attach any loose cords to the wall to avoid your child getting caught.• Avoid all types of cords, belts, hooks and handles close to the bunk bed, as your child could get caught in them. This also applies to toys.• Regularly check guard rails, slats, steps and fittings to make sure that nothing is broken or needs fastening. Replace or tighten any broken or loose pieces immediately.
