FROM PASTOR RICK

This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice in it! Psalm 118:24 What is happening in your life that makes you want to rejoice? What is happening in the world that makes you want to rejoice? Often when I’m asked this questions I tend to look at what is happening to me instead of what is happening in me. I am likely to see all the struggles happening in the world instead of claiming how and where God is moving and leading me to be a witness of grace. That tendency often leads me to find more reason to complain than rejoice. Even if I can find reasons to rejoice, they are temporary until something comes along to change my mood or situation. The Psalmist teaches us that rejoicing is not dependent on our own abilities or the fickleness of the world. Rejoicing happens because of the never changing truth: “This is the day that the Lord has made”. It may have great moments and it may have difficulties. But today is in God’s hands. There is much in the world we cannot change but there are always people and situations where we can make a difference for the sake of Christ. I have a chance to impact and share blessings of grace with the world. We all do. There are so many things to rejoice about in the life of our ministry at CUMC. It has been a great fall! We have had large attendance in worship, programs, and youth ministries. We have 800 or more participating in activities in our building from the community and church each week, not counting the weekends! So much good is happening. The best of all is this: Christ is moving us, blessing us and calling us for a purpose. Don’t miss an opportunity to come and share and pass on the greatness of God that is moving in our church. God is moving everyday. Always has been. This is the day to REJOICE!! Pastor Rick

WORSHIP

IF YOU HAVE BEEN MOVED OR INSPIRED BY WORSHIP, HERE ARE SOME GREAT WAYS YOU CAN GET INVOLVED.

Hospitality One of our Core Values as a congregation is Biblical Hospitality. As Pastor Rick says on our web site, “He (Jesus) welcomed the lonely and ostracized into a community of acceptance and grace. He left us with the command to do the same by going to the entire world and offer holy relationships.” We are going to share some stories of how this happens here at CUMC.

“A couple of months ago as I was leaving the Narthex, I noticed this older lady sitting off to the side. I rolled up to her, took her hand, welcomed her to our church and asked how her week had been. I always tell the ladies to have a good week. Well she took my hand with both hands with this wonderful smile and thanked me for asking. She now looks forward to my greeting each week. I found out that lady is Debi Damico’s mother and she is 98 years old. What a Lady! I have been interacting with this congregation as a Greeter and Usher for years now. There are so many people in this church who have gotten to know me as a result. If I miss a Sunday they will come up to me the next Sunday and ask if I’m OK. They care about me! The investment of my time as a Greeter and Usher is returned 100 fold. This is good stuff - you can’t beat it. Where else could I go on a Sunday morning knowing that that people care about me?” – Paul Ulrich

If you would like to be part of this ministry, please contact Mary Gladstone-Highland or Debi Damico ([email protected]).

Ushers - Looking for individuals to be part of our usher teams who play an important role at each service. Contact Bob Wyatt at [email protected].

Visuals Committee - This group of people help prepare the church for the sermon themes and seasons. Contact Angie Scheu at [email protected]

Liturgists - Participate in service by reading the Call to Worship and the Scripture. Contact Angie Scheu.

Communion Servers—Come 10 minutes before service and serve the elements of bread and juice to the congregation on the 1st Sunday of each month. Schedule would rotate. Contact Angie Scheu.

Communion Preparers—Purchase bread and juice and prepare communion including setting up in the Sanctuary for both services.

Choirs—All choirs have begun but all welcome any who want to join at any time. Contact leaders of each group you are interested in.

All 7th through 12th graders are invited to join us every Sunday for a lite breakfast and a great discussion in the Library or Youth Lounge once it is finished. Adult leaders will lead our youth in reading the scripture for that day, praying for our congregation and watching the pastor’s sermon together, as it is streamed live into the classroom. LAY READER REFLECTIONS

Missionary Update and the Ebola Crisis

Beatrice Gbanga, our Covenant Partner in Mission, is serving as the Sierra Leone Health Board Coordinator. Sierra Leone only has one doctor for every 50,000 citizens, compared to the US with one doctor per 375 citizens. Her passion for teaching and training everyone to take care of each other by identifying and treating illnesses and improving nutrition has made a difference. She has made a great impact with the Imagine No Malaria campaign, supervising, training and coordinating several thousand volunteers who go door-to-door teaching villagers about hanging nets. The Ebola crisis has dramatically shifted the focus of her work as the people are in extremely dire circumstances. She last spoke to us in 2012.

Princess Jusu, who serves as an instructor at the Women's Leadership Training Center in Monrovia, Liberia, is in New Jersey, having arrived for a family visit just before the Ebola escalation. The Training Center has been closed for now, as are schools and most other facilities. She spoke to us in May of 2013.

Beatrice and Princess Jusu are devastated at the toll this is taking on their people, who are living in fear, not even able to touch and properly bury their dead. They are anxious to return to work. Both report that the United Methodist Department of Health is providing supplies and conducting educational activities to focus on containing and preventing the spread of Ebola. While in the US, they are working to build awareness of the impact of this deadly disease.

Princess Jusu will be with us on Tuesday, November 11, at noon in the Parlor to speak to us. All are welcome to attend! We are also planning to host Beatrice in the near future so we will be able to hear about their experiences and stories from their beleaguered

countries. They have not been able to return to their countries, as yet. For more information, you can read their recent letters that are posted on the Missions Board in the hallway.

Our missionary guests from the DR Congo, Dan and Rachel Gabler, gave an informative program on their creative work involving aviation ministry and Christian education. Their talk on Ebola told us of its history, its variety of strains and of the harsh realities of dealing with the disease and isolationism. Please keep all of these committed, tireless servants for Christ in your prayers as they continue to serve God as they are able. Brenda DuPree Lay Leader

BUILDING COMMITTEE

Honoring Our Past....Building Our Future Thank you to all who participated in the informational Town Hall sessions. We were pleased to present the conceptual designs and vision for our ministry expansion. We appreciate your feedback and enthusiastic response! We will continue to focus on the key priorities, which include

▪ Improved Space for Children, Youth & Adult Programming

▪ Updated Hospitality and Welcome Area

▪ Multi-purpose addition

▪ Dedicated Mission area

▪ Barrier Free

▪ Flexibility In late October, we will receive initial feedback from Horizons Stewardship on the Potential and Possibility study. This will help us determine appropriate next steps for the architect in further refining the building plans and budget. We anticipate these findings and will provide an update as soon as it is available. For additional information, please visit the church website at www.clarkstonumc.org and click on the "Expansion" link on the top right. You will also find a new bulletin board in the hallway outside the Finance Office.

Please continue to keep the church in your prayers as we continue to develop the detailed plans and schedule. - Sandy Ballew, Co Chair - Tom Snudden, Co-Chair

THANK YOU

We would like to thank Pastors Rick and Amy, the staff, the kitchen committee and the congregation for the outpouring of love with the passing of my mom, Bernadette Hanlin. We were overwhelmed by all the support we received at the funeral. The flowers, cards and countless kind acts were truly appreciated. We feel very blessed to be part of such a caring and thoughtful congregation. Jeremy, Jenny and Carly Dean

ADULT EDUCATION

Tuesday Morning Parlor Class beginning October 7th, 9:30-11 am. Making Sense of the Bible: Rediscovering the Power of Scripture Today by Adam Hamilton. This is a dvd and book series examining all those nagging questions we have after reading the Bible: Were Adam and Eve real people? Why is God so violent in the Old Testament? What’s with Paul and women? Why do the gospel accounts differ? Did Jesus really say that? Hamilton uses approachable and inviting language to lead us into a deeper appreciation of the bible so we might hear God speak more clearly to us and find a life-changing, life-giving faith! Books $10 –see Christine. Please read to page 38 for first class. Facilitators Rev. Christine Wyatt.

Sunday Classes – Drop Ins Welcome Parents Circle is discussing Adam Hamilton’s book on Forgiveness. Discussion includes adaptations to include the parent/child relationship and how children learn self-forgiveness. Kathy Gleason, facilitator. Located in the space off Fellowship Hall formerly used by preschool. Childcare available.

Parlor Class is discussing Philip Gulley’s book Living the Quaker Way. Gulley gently and thoughtfully leads us through discussions of living our faith by embracing the values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community and equality. Faciitator: Rev Christine. Books are available at Amazon.

Living the Way is CUMC’s discipleship program for adults. It includes participation in a mission experience, service to the church (via hospitality, music, administration, teaching, leadership, etc.), a Bible study, learning CUMC’s core values, a class or study on Wesleyan/United Methodist beliefs, an introduction to spiritual disciplines or attending a retreat, and a workshop on discerning one’s spiritual gifts. Congratulations to: Gina Foote, Julie Hall, Jeri Hill, Tom Hill, Bob Hoff, Mary Kanous, Tim Sherrow, Sharon Sherrow, Suzie Tinka, Barbara Trueman, Marilyn Whisner, and Mac Whisner for completing this program and for continuing to live out God’s call to share Christ’s love. OCT 5 thru Nov 9 - 2014 CUMC SLEEPING BAGS FOR THE HOMELESS (SBFTH) MINISTRY Beginning Sunday, Oct. 5th thru Nov. 9, please consider donating new or gently used SLEEPING BAGS for the Homeless - Sleeping Bags can be dropped off at the church narthex (see "Hank and Sally"). Our goal is to hand out 150 sleeping bags to the homeless this year and now is a good time to get the off season bargains. Also, we will be collecting winter coats (adult and kid size), boots, socks, hats and McDonald Gift Cards. A great idea is to fill the winter coat pockets with pocket size Kleenex, chap stick, small hand cream and a pocket sized bible. Can't shop? Then please consider making a monetary love donation and Joyce Bleim will do the shopping for you! Please make checks payable to CUMC with Sleeping Bags in the Memo line.

As we continue to highlight our hardworking and talented staff, our church is blessed to have Cheryl Kelly as the CUMC Secretary.

Cheryl Kelly CUMC Secretary Here in the front office it’s usually myself or my roommate Jeremy Dean (head caretaker) who are the first faces you see when you come into CUMC. We try to always greet everyone and make them feel at ease. This is my home church and I love the staff and congregation so it’s easy to do that part of my job. I hope to direct anyone who is in need of someone or something to the right place and make them feel at ease at the same time. It can be stressful at times and multitasking keeps me on my toes but I enjoy the challenge and the change each day brings. Next time you are in stop in and say hello.

We have 3 scheduled dates for practices: Monday, Oct 6, 7-8:30pm (Fellowship Hall) Monday, Oct 13, 7-8:30pm (Fellowship Hall) Monday, Oct 20, 7-8:30pm (Narthex) Our final performance will be at Trunk or Treat on Sunday, Oct 26th at approx. 5pm. People seemed to get a kick out of it last year and we had several people ask to join us—so here is your chance!
