Chinese Film Week in DubaiLovers of world cinema will be thrilled to know there’s a whole week of films and events dedicated to Chinese productions right here in Dubai. China Film Week is the first event in the planned ‘Hala China’ initiative, a leisure initiative jointly developed by Meraas and Dubai Holding: a year of food, fashion, entertainment and sports events.

Screenings will take place place at Roxy Cinema outlets on City Walk, The Beach and Boxpark, including Po Feng, Twenties Once Again, The Nightingale, Dragon Blade, Wolf Totem, Monkey King: Hero is Back, American Dreams in China and Big Fish & Begonia. But that’s not all - the city is hosting some of China’s biggest celebrities and directors during the movie extravaganza. Chinese Film Week and the ‘Hala China’ initiative are designed to cater to the increasing number of Chinese tourists, as well as the UAE’s 270,000 Chinese expats. The Chinese Film Week is part of ‘Golden Week’, the period surrounding Chinese National Day celebrations.

Julio Iglesias at Dubai OperaThe most successful Latin artist in the world, the legendary Julio Iglesias lands in Dubai as part of his 50th anniversary world tour with two nights at Dubai Opera from 1-2 October. Playback Queen Shreya Ghoshal in ConcertCatch Shreya Ghoshal perform live with a full symphony orchestra at Dubai World Trade Centre. Bollywood’s ‘playback queen’ will be appearing at the Sheikh Rashid Hall, where fans old and new will hear the multiple-award winning 34-year-old sing some of her vast repertoire, which includes performing in 17 languages, including many Indian dialects, French, Nepalese, Bengali and Urdu. With the likes of Asha Bhosle and Kavita Krishnamurthy pronouncing Shreya the best singer of her generation, you know you are in the presence of a legendary singer. Last year alone, the soprano sang for 14 films. Ghoshal’s talent was first noticed by filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali after she won TV singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. She made her Bollywood playback singing debut with Bhansali’s romantic drama Devdas (2002) for which she received three awards.

Ghost the Musical at Dubai OperaThis October, the award-winning musical Ghost is coming to Dubai Opera’s stage. Based on the 1990 film of the same name, which starred Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg, it won two Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay.

Bruce Joel Rubin has adapted his Oscar-winning screenplay for this musical, which premiered in Manchester in 2011, and has been performed in London’s West End and New York’s Broadway. Since then, it’s been nominated for five Olivier Awards and three Tony Awards. It features songs such as ‘Unchained Melody’ by The Righteous Brothers, with original music and lyrics written by Dave Stewart and Glenn Ballard.

Polo Season at Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club

Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club’s winter polo season begins in earnest on 12 October, closely followed by the six-goal Halloween Cup, running from 19-26 October. The horseback games continue in November, when the prestigious Dubai club plays host to the 4-6 goal AHPRC League from 2-9 November. The unmissable Habtoor Polo Challenge Cup takes place on 19 November, and the 8-10 goal UAE National Day Cup dominates the calendar from 18-30 November. December sees the venue host The Sir Winston Churchill Cup from 7-14 of the month, while the 2018 season ends with the 4-6 goal AHPRC Christmas League between 15-21 December.

Nos Femmes at The JunctionAlserkal Avenue’s community theatre, The Junction, presents a dark comedy tale called ‘Nos Femmes’ (Our Women). First performed as a stage play in Paris, it was then made into a successful film in 2015. Now, Dubai audiences can watch it live on stage thanks to Culture Emulsion, the UAE-based arts company. The tale revolves around the close friendship between three men Max, Paul and Simon, who meet regularly to play cards. One fateful evening, Simon meets his long term friends and reveals a terrible secret. Max and Paul are horrified, and the plot takes an even darker twist when Simon asks them to lie and provide him with an alibi. Will they support their friend, or not? Find out this October.

PaRUS International Music Festival 2018PaRUS International Music Festival is returning for its second annual visit to Dubai, providing the opportunity to see some top Russian pop and rock musicians. The three-day event promises live performances from top talent including Grigory Leps, the highest-earning Russian recording artist ever, renowned for his wide vocal range, low growling voice, and mixed style, from chanson, to rock and pop. You’ll also get the chance to hear Loboda, the Ukrainian one-time Eurovision entrant, known not only for her singing talent, but also as a television presenter and actress.

Rapper and star of this year’s Russian TV edition of ‘The Bachelor’, Egor Kreed, will rock the stage while Ruki Vverh is sure to make you raise your hands. Laidback Luke at Zero GravityLucas Cornelis van Scheppingen is laid back. Laidback Luke, that is, the Filipino/Dutch DJ and music producer. Probably most renowned for his remix of the Robin S. song, “Show Me Love” back in 2009, the prolific music man will be making his Dubai debut at Zero Gravity. With three albums under his belt, he’s worked with artists such as David Guetta, Steve Angello, Axwell, Example and Junior Sanchez and played throughout Europe and North America as well as performing in Japan and Ibiza. Dubai Design WeekDubai Design Week is the region’s largest creative festival, reflecting Dubai’s position as design capital of the Middle East. The fourth edition of Dubai Design Week takes place 12-17 November, and includes over 200 events covering design across a range of disciplines including architecture, product, furniture, interior and graphic design.

Key events include the region’s leading design fair Downtown Design, and its showcase dedicated to limited-edition design, Downtown Editions, the Global Grad Show that brings together works from 100 of the most innovative universities across the world, and Abwab, the curated and interactive project containing original design from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia.

DP World Tour Championship 2018The DP World Tour Championship, one of the biggest events in Dubai’s sporting calendar, is back for its 10th edition from the 15-18 November. Part of the European Tour, and the thrilling climax to the European Tour Race to Dubai, this golfing tournament has seen some of the world’s best golfers competing here in the UAE, with past winners including Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm. The tournament has a prize fund of $8,000,000, and you can expect some tense scenes when the athletes battle it out on the course to take home the trophy.

Blanche Neige Voit RougeBlanche Neige Voit Rouge (Snow White Sees Red) is a stage adaptation of the much-loved fairly tale as you’ve never seen it before.

Presented by French theatre troupe Culture Emulsion at Alserkal Avenue’s The Junction, the play promises an interpretation that explores the true nature of the Brother’s Grimm characters. We see our two young actresses telling the tale of Snow White in their own fashion, a version where the Queen becomes increasingly neurotic, while Snow White is revealed to be a teenager undergoing a crisis. Expect a frenetic and fun 50 minute show, delivered in French, which takes a well-known story and turns it into a hilarious disaster.

Al Marmoom UltramarathonElite ultra runners from around the world have Dubai marked in their diaries from 11-15 December with the Al Marmoom Ultramarathon offering three gruelling distances to choose from: the world’s longest desert run at 270km, plus continuous 100km and 50km ultra runs.
