Happy Chinese New Year 新年快乐!

We would like to wish all our community a safe and enjoyable Chinese New Year. The Year of the Monkey should be a year of good fortune. One description I read about the people born in the Year of the Fire Monkey is that they are ‘Ambitious and adventurous, but irritable.’ I wonder which teachers, parents or friends this describes?

Have a fantastic February

NIS 2-3 Yrs All Schools

International School Assessment (ISA) - Data as Evidence of Learning

All parents of students who were at NIS in October 2015, Grades 3-10, already received important feedback from the ISA testing. The most important data is the performance of your own child(ren).

What I look for is evidence of the impact that NIS has on student learning. Although the best and most reliable data comes from teachers, it is always worth looking at independent data. As the enrollment trends have changed over time at NIS with students staying longer we now have data for students who have stayed for 2-3 years and are now in Grades 5-10. Below are graphs showing the average performance of students that have spent 2-3 years at NIS against students at All Schools in the sample regardless of their proportion of students from English speaking backgrounds.

Students who have been 2-3 years at NIS outperform all schools at Grades 5, 6 & 8, perform at the same level at Grade 10, and below at Grades 7 & 9 in narrative/reflective style writing. The only Grade that showed a lower rate of growth compared to all schools was Grade 7.

NIS 2-3 Yrs All Schools

Students who have been 2-3 years at NIS outperform all schools at all grades levels except Grade 9 in expository/argument style writing. All Grades that showed a higher rate of growth compared to all schools.

1. NIS students who have 2-3 years experience at NIS have equal or higher rates of growth in 22 of 24 categories when compared against all schools.

2. NIS students who have 2-3 years experience at the school have equal or higher scores in 21 of 24 categories when compared against like schools.

The ISA evidence suggests that NIS has an accelerated impact on student growth and achievement over time. However, we would also like other forms of data at the individual student level to meet our mission desire for personal excellence so we are also looking at a responsive platform which automatically levels questions to match the student, thus stretching all students at an appropriate level.

Grades 2 to 5 Production (March 4th, 2016)

We are now rehearsing as whole grades in the theatre so that we can practice on the stage.

We are also rehearsing with the props crew and the main cast runner at the main cast rehearsals.

Please encourage your child/children to perform their performance pieces to you, and encourage them to practice the bits that you think

that they are struggling with.

ACAMIS GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Basketball Teams traveled to International School Beijing on Thu 28 - Sun 30th January for the ACAMIS Championships. The girls squad were Brydie (Co-Capt), Kalila (Co-Capt), Michelle L, Michelle G, Sophia R, Sophie G, Eliza, Morgan, Cosima & Isobel, with Coaches Snyder & Clarke

The girls came out of the group stages in 4th place after 2 wins and 2 losses. In the semi final they came up against a very tough team from Dulwich Shanghai who overpowered them. In the 3rd/4th Play off they were up against the other Dulwich team, this one from Beijing. The girls got off to a strong start, taking an early lead. Dulwich pulled back in the later stages of the game and finally beat our girls by just 1 point. An exciting finish to a great season. Thank you to all the squad players for making it a fun season and we are looking forward to next year’s tournament here at NIS

NIS ACAMIS BOYS HOOPS TOURNEY IS A SUCCESS!

The NIS ACAMIS Boys squad came home from Beijing with some hard-earned hardware this season, finishing in Third Place and being voted the Sportsmanship Award winners!

The boys began the tournament with two tight wins, including an epic buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Joe and a clutch lay-up in overtime by Hyunseok, vs. the home team, ISB. Day Two saw the boys fight their way into the semi-final based upon the steady, and often charismatic play of guards Ryan and Hamzah, as well as the bedrock of the defense, Jose “The Robot." Solid contributions from the ever-improving Jonathan, Anthony, Alex, and Patrick “The Shooter” helped the team battle towards the final day.

After a narrow loss in the semis, the boys rallied and defeated a resilient SCIS team to claim 3rd place, largely based on the surprise start of the team’s only senior, Denny “No Foul.”

The team is looking forward to hosting the ACAMIS tournament next year here at NIS, and will settle for nothing less than the top spot. Congrats to our ACAMIS squad and the rest of our teammates, who helped us prepare. Go Lions!
