Syllabus – Elementary Level

Course Description:

This course aims to help students with a very basic Chinese knowledge to continuallyimprove their Chinese study. Students will have a live lecture (1.5 hours) every weekday, andhave access to recorded videos and exercises provided by our teachers. The live lectures focuson listening and speaking, and the recorded videos/ exercises focus on listening, reading, andwriting. This course will develop students’ communication ability required in daily interactionwith Chinese speakers and more understanding about Chinese culture. Various form of languageexercises are provided to help students with the structures and vocabulary of the lessons and toimprove their four language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Learning outcomes:

Be able to demonstrate understanding of a speaker of the target language if they speakvery slowly and clearly about simple everyday topics

Be able to demonstrate understanding of very short, simple texts in the target language,when allowed to read very slowly

Be able to use the target language to provide simple information orally, ask and answersimple questions, and respond to simple statements on very familiar topics

Be able to use the target language to write simple sentences about themselves,including where they live and what they do

Teaching materials: Teaching material will be provided by your teachers.

Time: 3:00-4:30pm on weekdays for live lectures. 15 hours of live lectures, more than 20 hoursof self-study materials in 2 weeks.

Certificate

At the end of the course, students who have scored 40% or above in course evaluation will get acertificate of completion.

Participation

Students need to preview the lesson, respond to the questions and discussion in class actively,complete homework on time.

Excellent (16-20) Prepares for and participate in all class activities and assignments. Fullattendance.

Good (11-15) Prepares for and participate in most class activities and assignments. Fullattendance.

Fair (6-10) Poor preparation and participation in class activities and assignments. Rarely attends.

Poor (1-5) Little effort to participate in class and learning Chinese.

Attendance

All students are expected to attend every live class, watch every recorded video, and finish allthe provided exercises/assignment. Whoever has three unexcused absences will have the Fairevaluation for participation, 5 unexcused absences will be considered to drop out the final test.Please note that there tardy attendances will be counted as an unexcused absence.

Assignments

Homework will be assigned which is due in the next class.

Excellent (16-20) All exercises done correctly to a very high standard.

Good (11-15 ) Task completed to a satisfactory standard and not more than 30% of mistakes.

Fair (6-10) Not more than 50% of mistakes.

Poor (1-5) Attempted, but mostly incorrect.
