From the Potting ShedHello, and welcome to our 43rd Annual Show. 60 years ago the show was held on August Bank Holiday in a marquee opposite the Pheasant Public house. Today, as then, your support for the show is essential for its continuation s. Please do make an entry to one of the many classes, it can be fun. There are classes for all, members, non-members and children. The rain we had in early June certainly came just in time, it transformed the gardens which, aat the time looked quite forlorn.Remember that at the end of the show many of the entries will be auctioned and members produce will be on sale. Why go to a supermarket when you can buy fresh vegetables, beautiful flowers and homemade cakes, jam etc after enjoying the show.A reminder that all are welcome to our monthly social meetings that are held in the Jubilee Rooms in the Market Place at 7.30 on the second Tuesday of each month. Next month Corsham are hosting enjoyable he inter society quiz which is between Chippenham, Corsham, Box and Melksham. The quiz really is enjoyable as well as being very informative.A very sincere thanks to Anna, Frances, Sue and Anne and those other members who, every year, put in so much effort to make the show a success.Thank you also to the judges who give up their Saturdays and are always ready to give valuable advice on presentation of individual entries. We are very much in their debt.We look forward to seeing you and good luck.

Allotment tipsFrench BeansDwarf French beans are a great catch crop. Use them to follow the early potatoes when they're lifted. If you don't use the soil, then the weeds will so you may as well keep it productive.

They're fast, often producing in 8 or 10 weeks and, being a legume, they actually fix nitrogen from the air which is good for the soil fertility. Even if you sow dwarf beans too late in the year to produce a crop, they provide a good green manure. The roots keep the soil open, they provide nitrogen from the roots and the plant provides compost material.Natural insecticide and weed killer!

RhubarbMany of us grow rhubarb and are aware that the leaf part of the plant is very poisonous to humans. You can use the toxic qualities of this garden favourite to produce insecticide. Boil up the leaves in water, add some soap flakes, allow to cool and spray to kill most leaf eating insects. You can also use the fresh leaves to suppress and kill weeds. Cut and lay them on paths - the poisons will leech out and kill weeds, whilst starving them of light.

The Flowers by Robert Louis Stevenson

All the names I know from nurse: Gardener’s garters, Shepherd’s purse,

Bachelor’s buttons, Lady’s smock, And the Lady Hollyhock.

Fairy places, fairy things, Fairy woods where the wild bee wings,

Tiny trees for tiny dames-- These must all be fairy names!

Tiny woods below whose boughs Shady fairies weave a house;

Tiny tree-tops, rose or thyme, Where the braver fairies climb!

Fair are grown-up people’s trees, But the fairest woods are these;

Where, if I were not so tall, I should live for good and all.
