GAME ONE VS. VMI

By Doug ZaleskiMUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State football coach Pete

Lembo’s career has been marked by explosive offense that picks at an opponent’s defensive weaknesses bit by bit or with the suddenness of a bolt of lightning.

Both of those characteristics were apparent Thursday night when the Cardinals opened the 2015 season against Virginia Military Institute.

Ball State and VMI combined to put on a prolific show of offensive football that ended with the Cardinals claiming a 48-36 victory in front of 10,473 fans in their season-opener in Scheumann Stadium. The win was Ball State’s sixth in a row in a home opener.

Anybody expecting to be entertained likely had no complaints as the teams combined to pile up 1,114 yards of offense, breaking the stadium record of 1,072 set in 2012 in the Cardinals’ game vs. Northern Illinois.

“These games are like three and a half hours in purgatory if you’re in my position,” Lembo said. “We were expecting a high scoring game going in … we also anticipated we were going to get the kitchen sink thrown at us, which we certainly did.

“We saw a fake punt, a fake field goal, two onside kicks and certainly some chances they took going for it on fourth down.”

While the Ball State defense wobbled after a strong early start, the offense functioned at a high level considering sophomore quarterback Jack Milas was making only his seventh col-legiate start, the backfield was relatively inex-perienced and the offensive line included two players who made starts for injured players.

Despite those potential obstacles, the Cardinals’ performance on offense was notable in several areas.

Their 567 yards was the ninth-best offensive output in school history, and gave them 1,152 in their past two games going back to the 2014 finale. They ran 95 plays, tying for fifth most in school history.

Sophomore tailback Darian Green tied a school record for a single game with four touchdowns – rushing for three and catching a pass for one. He also returned four kickoffs for 120 yards, with a long of 48 yards.

Milas set personal bests with 34 comple-tions, 52 attempts and 338 yards. He wasn’t sacked all game despite numerous blitzes attempted by VMI.

Eight players caught at least one pass, with Jordan Williams snagging eight for 99 yards and KeVonn Mabon seven for 54.

“We operated pretty well offensively other than settling for some field goals in the first half,” Lembo said. “It was a good, solid win.”

Milas played his first game since cracking

a bone in a wrist late last season. He admitted to some nerves at the start of the game, but Lembo and offensive coordinator Joey Lynch dialing up 34 pass attempts in the first half helped him settle down.

“Just being out there again, getting the feel of a game, was great,” said Milas, whose 52 pass attempts were second most in school his-tory. “I think I’ve improved, as an offense we’ve improved, and as a team we’ve improved tremendously.

“From last year to this year, it’s a completely different story.”

Ball State’s defense shut down VMI early, holding the Keydets to 46 yards and forcing them to punt after each of their first five pos-sessions.

But VMI eventually found some momentum and capitalized on some spotty play by the Cardinals’ defense to finish with 547 yards (303 after halftime). VMI scored 26 of its points in the second half.

Lembo said there were mistakes to correct, for sure, but he didn’t want his players to lose sight of the winning feeling they experienced.

“I told them afterward that I never want to not be happy with a win because they’re too hard to come by,” he said.

Linebacker Sean Wiggins led the Cardinals with 10 tackles. Defensive end Joshua Posley forced a fumble that Osa Igbinosun recovered, setting up a fourth-quarter Ball State touch-down.

Ball State returns to action Sept. 12 at Texas A&M.

GAME TWO AT #16/19 TEXAS A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Ball State University football team suffered a 56-23 loss at No. 16 Texas A&M Saturday night at Kyle Field. This was the first-ever meeting between the two programs and Ball State’s first game against an SEC opponent since 2009.

“It was a disappointing loss,” Ball State head coach Pete Lembo said. “The numbers don’t lie. We didn’t get off to a great start, but I do think we settled down a little at halftime and was pleased with how the guys came out and played in the second half.”

Texas A&M (2-0) started the scoring early and took a 7-0 lead with just 2:36 shaved off the clock, but the Cardinals responded with a 21-yard field goal from Morgan Hagee to make it a 7-3 ball game. Sophomore Darian Green highlighted the Cardinals’ opening drive with back-to-back runs that totaled 74 yards to put Ball State in scoring position.

After that, the Aggies would add six more touchdowns to take a 49-3 advantage over the Cardinals at the half.

Former Yorktown High School quarterback, Riley Neal made his first collegiate appearance late in the second quarter. Neal remained in the game for the remainder of the contest. The true freshman finished 11-of-19 passing for 116 yards along with 57 yards rushing on eight carries.

Ball State (1-1) was the first to score in the second half when Green ran in a six-yard touchdown with 11:38 remaining in the third quarter.

On the Aggies’ ensuing possession, sopho-more defensive end Anthony Winbush forced a fumble and recovered the ball after sacking Texas A&M quarterback Kyler Murray. The Cardinals got the ball back on the Aggies’ 22-yard line and would score off of a season best 43-yard field goal from Hagee with 7:39 on the clock.

In the fourth quarter, Ball State added its second touchdown behind a one-yard run from freshman James Gilbert.

Green and Gilbert combined for 167 yards on the ground and two scores.

On defense, junior Joshua Posley stood out for a second straight game with a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss.

“The biggest thing is we learned more about our football team … hopefully we can put it all together next week as we open conference play,” Lembo said.

Ball State continues its three-game road swing next Saturday with its Mid-American Conference opener at Eastern Michigan. Game time is set for 3 p.m.

GAME THREE AT EASTERN MICHIGAN

YPSILANTI, Mich. – In the Mid-American Conference opener, the Ball State football team pulled off a 28-17 victory over host Eastern Michigan. The Cardinals trailed 17-0 midway through the second quarter before rolling off 28 straight points.

With the win, Ball State improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the MAC while Eastern Michi-gan falls to 1-2 and 0-1.

“It wasn’t an easy win. This is a much-im-proved team. But to come on the road and get a win here is a nice start,” Ball State head coach Pete Lembo said. “We’re still learning a lot about our football team and we still have a lot to fix, but we’re certainly going to take it and be happy with the result.”

Freshman quarterback Riley Neal led the Cardinals on two long scoring drives late in the second quarter and then two more on back-to-back possessions midway through the second half.

Ball State’s first scoring drive was an early turning point in the game. Trailing 17-0 in the second quarter and facing 4th-and-1 at its 34-yard line, Ball State decided to go for the first down. Freshman running back James Gilbert extended the drive with a 10-yard run. Three plays later, Neal scored on a broken play 41-yard highlight run down the right sideline to get the Cardinals on the board.

The Cardinal offense marched 94 yards on seven plays right before halftime to cut the deficit to 17-14. Neal capped the drive with a 26-yard touchdown strike over the middle to senior wide receiver Jordan Williams with 38 seconds left on the clock.

Ball State took the lead for good with a me-thodical 20-play, 85-yard drive that took 9:49 off clock in the third and early fourth quarters. The Cardinals converted three third downs and two fourth downs on the crucial drive. Gilbert gave Ball State the lead with a 5-yard scoring run with 12:55 remaining.

After a quick three-and-out by Eastern Michigan, Ball State went on the march again. Sophomore running back Darian Green put the Cardinals in scoring position with a 30-yard burst. A few minutes later, Gilbert slipped into the end zone again on a 1-yard run to extend the lead to 28-17.

From there, the Ball State defense made sure the lead would hold. Senior linebacker Sean Wiggins, who recorded his first collegiate sack earlier in the contest, came away with interceptions on Eastern Michigan’s final two possessions.

“We did a nice job fitting things in the second half and we didn’t have many missed tackles,” Lembo said. “One of the best things we did was stay in coverage down the field on

scrambles. Our guys did a nice job whether it was man or zone and not allowing explosive plays off scrambles.”

Green led the rushing attack with 164 yards on 25 carries. Gilbert added 39 yards and two scores while Neal carried 11 times for 86 yards and a touchdown. Neal was also proficient through the air, completing 24-of-28 passes (85.7 percent) for 194 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, the Cardinals held Eastern Michigan to just 106 yards on its final six pos-sessions. Sophomore defensive back David Moore led the squad with six tackles. Fellow back Darius Conaway added four stops and three pass break-ups.

Ball State returns to non-conference action next Saturday, Sept. 26 in its first ever meeting against Northwestern.

GAME FOUR AT #17/19 NORTHWESTERN

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Ball State football team had its chances Saturday night at No. 17 North-western, but in the end the Wildcats were able to hold off the visiting Cardinals, 24-19.

The Cardinals (2-2) were in search of their third win over a Big Ten squad in five years un-der head coach Pete Lembo and first win over a nationally-ranked team in nearly three years.

“It was one of those nights where you felt really good about the effort and how we competed, but at the end of the day, to beat a quality team like this, you have to play an extremely clean football game,” head coach Pete Lembo said.

Ball State took a 10-7 lead into halftime thanks in large part to a solid defensive effort and turnovers. The Wildcats (4-0) turned the ball over three times in the first 30 minutes and Ball State turned two of those turnovers into 10 points. Freshman Morgan Hagee put Ball State on the scoreboard first with a 30-yard field goal after Northwestern’s first turnover.

Late in the half, the Wildcats fumbled deep in their own territory giving Ball State the ball at Northwestern’s 22-yard line. One play later, freshman QB Riley Neal hooked up with senior WR Jordan Williams for a touchdown strike to give the Cardinals the 10-7 lead.

However, that lead could have been bigger. Ball State missed two field goals in the half and fumbled at the Northwestern four-yard line on the first play of the second quarter.

Northwestern came out of intermission and scored on its first three possessions to jump ahead, 24-10.

The Cardinals finally responded late in the third quarter to stay in the ball game. Neal jumpstarted the offense with his arm and legs. First he hit Williams on a 19-yard pass and then scrambled 22 yards to move the football into Northwestern territory. Williams capped the drive with a spectacular 29-yard touchdown catch in the back of the end zone to cut the deficit to 24-16. The Cardinals missed the ensu-ing PAT.

Ball State made one more push deep into Northwestern territory with five minutes to play. Sophomore RB Darian Green rumbled 21 yards around the right end to move the ball to the Wildcats’ 19-yard line. Unfortunately, the drive stalled and the Cardinals settled for a 36-yard field goal to make the score, 24-19.

Northwestern ran down the clock on its final drive, converting two big third downs to essentially ice the game.

Williams scored both of Ball State’s touch-downs and finished with season highs in re-ceptions (eight) and receiving yards (133). Ball State’s 19 points were more than Northwestern allowed in its first three games combined.

Junior CB Tyree Holder chipped in with his first interception of the season as well as a forced fumble. Senior LB Ben Ingle led all play-ers with 13 tackles.

Northwestern’s Justin Jackson ran for 184 yards on 33 carries. QB Clayton Thorson threw for 256 yards and three scores.

Ball State returns to MAC play next Saturday with its 89th Homecoming game. The Cardi-nals host Toledo on ESPN3 beginning at 3 p.m.

GAME FIVE VS. TOLEDO

By Doug ZaleskiMUNCIE, Ind. — Lady Luck was nowhere to

be found on Ball State’s sideline Saturday. The Cardinals have authored several

memorable finishes in football against Toledo at Scheumann Stadium, and for a while in the fourth quarter it looked like another was be-ginning to bud. But as quickly as the opportu-nity began to take shape, it was snuffed out by a series of mistakes.

That was a game-long trend on a cold early fall day as the Cardinals seemingly kicked away every opportunity they had. Instead of a come-back, they were left scratching their heads as the Rockets claimed a 24-10 victory.

“The truth is, we didn’t do the things from the opening snap in terms of physicality and execution to beat a good football team,” Cardi-nals coach Pete Lembo. “This game came down to our inability to score any points and move the ball effectively in the first half and take advantage of turnovers, good field position.”

It wasn’t for a lack of cooperation by Toledo (4-0, 1-0 Mid-American Conference West). Rockets quarterback Phillip Ely tossed inter-ceptions on his first two pass attempts in the game.

Tyree Holder picked off the first at the Ball State 43-yard line for his sixth career intercep-tion, and Terin Solomon snagged the second at the Cardinals’ 37. But Ball State (2-3, 1-1 MAC West) punted after a three-and-out series on Holder’s pick and again after a 10-play drive following Solomon’s interception ended at the Rockets’ 37 with a punt.

Lembo called it “critical” that the Cardinals didn’t produce points on either turnover.

“The defense got us the ball back, we had good field position early, we put together some decent drives to get the ball down into their territory, and we had nothing to show for it,” he said.

That set the tone for much of the game.Late in the first quarter, quarterback Riley

Neal lost a fumble on a run at the Toledo 34-yard line that wiped out a first down for the Cardinals and took away a scoring opportunity in a scoreless game.

Neal was out of sync in the passing game most of the first half, misfiring on seven of his 14 attempts.

While Ball State was having trouble, Toledo flourished on offense in the second quarter behind its two-pronged rushing attack of Terry Swanson and Damion Jones-Moore. They gouged the Cardinals’ defense for big gains to spur a 24-point explosion by the Rockets.

“Missed tackles, way too many missed tackles,” linebacker Ben Ingle summed up the Cardinals’ issues on defense.

The Cardinals played better in the second half, but a 24-3 deficit at halftime proved too big.

Neal settled down and was able to find wideout Jordan Williams after halftime. Wil-liams was held to one catch in the first half before collecting six for 91 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown in the final two quarters.

“Obviously we made some more plays,” said Williams, who extended his streak of games with at least one reception to 29.

Enough plays to throw a scare into Toledo.Williams’ touchdown with 11:12 left in the

game brought the Cardinals within 14 points. They were on the verge of trimming their defi-cit to 24-17 with just under six minutes to go before more mistakes ended the threat.

First, Neal’s pass from the 4-yard line intend-ed for a wide open Dylan Curry in the end zone was batted down near the line of scrimmage by Toledo. On the next play, Neal threw for an apparent touchdown to Williams but Curry was called for offensive pass interference to wipe out the score.

The penalty pushed the Cardinals back to the 19, and a third-down pass was incomplete. Lembo opted for a 36-yard field-goal attempt instead of a pass from the 19 on fourth-and-goal.

The strategy didn’t work as a Toledo line-man tipped a low kick by Morgan Hagee.

Neal finished 23-for-37 for a career-high 236 yards. Williams had seven catches for 100 yards, his second straight game at that level.

GAME SIX AT NORTHERN ILLINOIS

DeKALB, Ill. – Host Northern Illinois retained position of the Bronze Stalk Trophy Saturday afternoon with a 59-41 win over the Ball State football team.

With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the Mid-American Conference. Northern Illinois kept its perfect home record intact (3-0) and improved to 3-3 and 1-1.

“I really thought we were aggressive early in the game and tried to throw all we had at them,” head coach Pete Lembo said. “We needed to get some stops in the second half and weren’t able to do that.”

A 26-yard field goal from freshman kicker Morgan Hagee and a four-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Riley Neal to sophomore wide receiver Jordan Hogue, gave the Cardinals an early 10-0 advantage at the start of the second quarter.

But that was the last time Ball State would be in control of the ball game. Northern Illinois answered with four straight touchdown drives which gave the Huskies a 28-13 advantage with 1:58 left to play in the opening half.

The Cardinal offense put some life back into the team right before intermission. Freshman running back James Gilbert scored from two yards out with nine seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to eight points, 28-20.

Neal hit junior KeVonn Mabon on a 48-yard scoring strike for Ball State’s first touchdown of the second half to keep the Cardinals within reach (35-27) of the Huskies. However, North-ern Illinois scored on its ensuing four posses-sions to pull away.

Today’s game marked Neal’s first 300-yard passing game of his collegiate career. The true freshman finished 31-of-53 passing for 393 yards and four touchdowns. Senior wide out Jordan Williams reached 100 yards receiving for the third straight game and led all players with 108 receiving yards.

Ball State will take a break from MAC play next Saturday, Oct. 17 and host Sun Belt foe Georgia State at Scheumann Stadium begin-ning at 3 p.m.

GAME SEVEN VS. GEORGIA STATE

By Doug ZaleskiMUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State football coach Pete

Lembo wasn’t impressed with what he saw from his team Saturday in its final non-confer-ence game of the season.

Seventy-five percent efficiency wasn’t good enough. Forty-five minutes of decent performance wasn’t good enough. A resilient recovery on defense in the second half wasn’t good enough.

The small percentages of botched plays, missed opportunities and lack of focus added up to a major issue for the Cardinals as they lost 31-19 to upstart FBS program Georgia State Saturday afternoon in Scheumann Stadium.

“I hope some of our guys will look at it and not accept it, just like I don’t accept the overall performance,” Lembo said. “If you just walk out of here and say, ‘I didn’t play very well today,’ or ‘I dropped three passes, well, what am I going to do to fix that?’

“At the end of the day, I have to find a way to get it done and get through to them to do it. But if we have the right guys, which I believe we do, they’re going to find a way to work on those things, too.”

Ball State (2-5) couldn’t solve that problem against the Panthers (2-4) as mental mistakes and physical breakdowns added up to trouble as it lost a fourth straight game.

The second quarter proved to be a killer for the Cardinals. After starting the game with a three-and-out and four-and out on their first two possessions, the Panthers scored three touchdowns and a field goal on their final four possessions of the first half to open a 24-10 halftime lead.

Though Ball State showed some spark on offense and defense in the second half, it never recovered from its lapse in the first half.

And on defense, the Cardinals allowed Georgia State quarterback Nick Arbuckle to throw for 246 yards in the first half. The senior finished with 412 yards, two shy of his school single-game record.

The Panthers, who played their inaugural game in 2010 and had only one previous win against an FBS opponent (34-32 over New Mexico State last year), gave the Cardinals a chance to get back in the game and possibly win during the second half.

But Ball State couldn’t take advantage of the opportunities.

Trailing 24-13 late in the third quarter, Car-dinals quarterback Riley Neal threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Chris Shillings on fourth and two. But the play was called back by of-fensive pass interference.

“I saw the blown coverage and I saw Chris

standing alone; no one was within 15 or 20 yards of him,” Neal said. “I saw Chris running down the field, and in my periphery, I saw a flag. It was a tough break.”

The Cardinals punted after the penalty. They moved within 24-19 on a 19-yard

touchdown pass from Neal to Jordan Williams with 10:34 left in the game. Ball State was about to get the ball back later, still trailing by five, but a roughing the punter penalty allowed the Panthers to keep the ball and run the clock down to 3:59 before punting from their 48.

After a three-and-out by the Cardinals’ of-fense, Georgia State clinched the win when a 68-yard pass from Arbuckle to Donovan Harden set up a first down at the 1-yard line. Two plays later, Arbuckle scored on a sneak to put his team ahead 31-19 with just 2:13 left.

“Our kids played resilient,” said Panthers coach Trent Miles, who coached Indiana State from 2008-12.

Ball State’s offense, which delivered 503 yards and 41 points a week earlier against Northern Illinois, managed only 372 yards and 19 points against Georgia State.

“We weren’t clicking on all cylinders,” said Neal, who completed 28 of 48 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns. “We had miscues here and there. We struggled a little with all of us being on the same page.”

Jordan Williams and KeVonn Mabon each had seven receptions. Mabon left with 8:04 to play with an injury.

Darian Green led the Cardinals in rushing with 70 yards on 17 carries. Sean Wiggins and Michael Ayers each had eight tackles, and Wig-gins had a sack.

GAME EIGHT VS. CENTRAL MICHIGAN

By Doug ZaleskiMUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State linebacker Sean

Wiggins made an observation after Saturday’s football game against Central Michigan that seemed to fit a play teammate KeVonn Mabon made with the outcome on the line in the fourth quarter.

“Big time players make big time plays in big time games,” Wiggins said.

He was talking about a different situation in the game, but the statement fit Mabon’s act.

With the Cardinals’ offense stuck in the mud, and the team searching for anything resembling a boost, Mabon returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown that put Ball State ahead by one point, 21-20, with 10:24 left to play.

But Central Michigan found a way to make a few big plays of its own after that, and came back late in the game to hand Ball State a 23-21 loss in a Mid-American Conference game at Scheumann Stadium.

It was a disappointing blow for the Cardi-nals, who fell to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the MAC.

Ball State struggled with a series of break-downs on offense throughout the contest, but a 1-yard touchdown run on fourth down on the final play of the first half sent the Cardinals to the locker room with a 14-10 lead.

With the Cardinals getting the ball first in the third quarter, the touchdown seemingly gave them some momentum heading into the second half.

Instead, Ball State gained just 23 yards with no first downs, going three-and-out on all four of its possessions in the third period.

“There was a big risk-reward there,” Cardi-nals coach Pete Lembo said of going for the touchdown instead of a field goal with three seconds left in the second quarter. “If they stop you, it’s a huge momentum gain for them.

“Why it didn’t pay off momentum-wise for us in the second half, there’s a lot more to it than that.”

Central Michigan (4-4, 3-1 MAC) regained the lead at 17-14 with a 4-yard touchdown pass on a miscommunication of coverage by the Cardinals’ secondary. Then a career-long 47-yard field goal by the Chippewas’ Brian Eavey left Ball State trailing 20-14 going into the final quarter.

At that point, Ball State had run 12 plays without getting a first down in the second half.

“They gave us some different looks; they adjusted after halftime just like we do and every other team does,” Cardinals freshman quarterback Riley Neal said of being stymied on offense. “We just struggled. It was tough for us.”

yards and a touchdown. On the kickoff after Eavey’s field goal, Cardi-

nals returner Mabon returned the ball 89 yards for a touchdown. Suddenly – and perhaps unexpectedly – Ball State owned a 21-20 lead with 10:24 left in the game.

“As any athlete or competitor, you want to make a big play when you’re on the field,” Mabon said. “I got the ball, the hole opened up, and I hit it.

“When I looked up and saw a hat on a hat, and had (a blocker) in front of me, it was go time.”

All the way into the north end zone with 11 Central Michigan players left in his wake. It was the first Ball State kickoff return for a touchdown since Eric Williams had one in 2010 against Eastern Michigan.

But on a day when the Cardinals managed just 299 yards of offense (only 79 in the second half ), the lead was short-lived. Central Michi-gan’s ensuing possession resulted in a 55-yard drive in 11 plays, ending with what proved to be Eavey’s game-deciding 34-yard field goal with 5:30 remaining.

The Cardinals, needing only a field goal to take the lead, had two chances to rally from the 23-21 deficit.

The first ended when they were stopped on fourth-and-2 from the 50-yard line with 3:21 left in the game. The last was stopped when Neal’s pass was incomplete on fourth-and-9 from the Cardinals 45 with 1:02 left.

“We’re all in this together, and we all share in the disappointment,” Lembo said of the Cardinals’ fifth straight defeat. “I told the kids if we put forth the same preparation and the same spirit we showed today, and a little better execution, we’re going to be just fine.”

GAME NINE VS. UMASS

By Doug ZaleskiMUNCIE, Ind. – Ben Ingle said he was fooled

on a curl route early in Saturday’s football game, but he didn’t fall out of position the second time.

That proved to be especially critical for Ball State as it turned in perhaps its most consistent effort on defense this season. The Cardinals bent at times, but they didn’t break in key situations.

The result was a 20-10 Mid-American Conference victory over UMass at Scheumann Stadium as the Cardinals ended a five-game losing streak.

Ingle caught a break in the first half when a Minuteman receiver ran a curl and got open. But the pass was dropped. The next time UMass (1-7, 0-4 MAC East) tried to hit the route, Ingle was in front of the receiver in the end zone and made a key interception.

“I fixed my mistake,” said Ingle, who tied Lamont McPhatter for the team lead in tackles with 14. “I sat on the curl route and just read the quarterback. We made that adjustment at halftime and it ended up being a big play.”

The play could have been a six-yard touchdown pass that would have brought UMass within 20-17 with 9:42 left in the game. Instead, Ingle picked off the ball, and the Min-utemen were unable to score in the final nine minutes of the game.

The Cardinals (3-6, 2-3 MAC West) had just enough of those types of plays to thwart a UMass offense that has one of the top passing attacks in the MAC.

The Minutemen entered the game ranked second in the league in passing yards per game (315.0), possessing the No. 3 passer in quarterback Blake Frohnapfel (290.6 per game) and a top receiver in Tajae Sharp, who was first in catches per game (11.0) and second in receiving yards (128.1).

UMass scored 20 points in the first half against Notre Dame and 28 in the opening half against Toledo, both of which are national top 25 teams. The 10 points against Ball State represented a season low for the Minutemen.

“To hold them to 10 points, it wasn’t just the secondary … everybody played a part,” free safety Martez Hester said.

Though Ball State gave up 448 yards of offense to UMass, it allowed the Minutemen only a field goal in the second quarter and a touchdown in the third.

The Cardinals’ defense came up big in the closing moments after UMass reached the Ball State 21-yard line.

The Minutemen lined up to go for it on fourth-and-1 but a false start moved them back to the 26. Frohnapfel completed a pass

for five yards, but it was a yard shy of the first down and Ball State took over with 3:52 left in the game while maintaining its 20-10 lead.

“We brought the linebackers up to give kind of a bluff (blitz) look,” Ingle said. “That pulls the guard. It was a great call that coach Kelly (defensive coordinator Kevin Kelly) dialed up.”

Frohnapfel completed 32 of 44 passes, but his average completion gained only eight yards. The quarterbacks Ball State played against in the past three games averaged 12.5 yards per completion.

“We gave up some completions, but we were right there to tackle it, whether it was a 1-on-1 situation or we had them boxed in,” Lembo said. “For the most part, it seemed we were containing big plays, and that’s a key to slowing (UMass) down.”

Ball State led 10-3 at halftime and received an immediate spark to start the second half when Darian Green returned the kickoff 85 yards to the UMass 15-yard line.

Three plays later, Cardinals quarterback Riley Neal passed 10 yards to Jordan Williams for a touchdown to open a 17-3 lead.

“I knew it was vital to set the tempo for the (second) half,” said Green, who entered the week as the MAC’s No. 5 kick returner and now has an average runback of 25.6 yards. “Me and the guys on that unit had a mission to go out and set the tempo.”

Ball State’s offense gained 427 yards in the game.

Neal completed 20-of-32 passes for 275 yards. KeVonn Mabon caught six passes for 150 yards (the highest total by a Cardinal this year) and Jordan Williams had six receptions for 60 yards.

GAME 10 AT WESTERN MICHIGAN

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Host Western Michigan earned a 54-7 victory over the Ball State football team Thursday night at Waldo Stadium.

The Broncos (6-3, 5-0 MAC) have won five straight games and currently sit atop of the Mid-American Conference West Division stand-ings.

Western Michigan scored on the third of-fensive play of the game, a 65-yard touchdown pass from Zach Terrell to Corey Davis, and never looked back.

“I thought despite the short week, we had a decent week of preparation,” Ball State head coach Pete Lembo said. “But obviously it didn’t show out here at all tonight. We’ll try to get this group regrouped and finish strong.”

Ball State’s (3-7, 2-4) lone scoring drive came in the third quarter when freshman quarter-back Riley Neal hit senior wide receiver Jordan Williams on a perfect 11-yard fade pattern. The scoring drive was keyed by a 30-yard run from freshman James Gilbert.
