Welcome to the 42nd Annual Chisholm Trail Roundup (CTR) on June 12, 13, & 14!

The whole county has been buzzing since last year when we brought back the Rodeo to Lockhart

and Caldwell County. For a second year, the Rodeo is here at the City Park in the middle of all the ex-

citement that already makes this CTR, the largest tourism event of the year. Many hours of preparation

have gone into planning the Rodeo and all the events of CTR, so make sure you give a great big thank

you to our Chamber Board of Directors, all the CTR Chairs and of course the countless volunteers

who donate their time.

Chisholm Trail Roundup has developed into a Texas-sized week of activities covering two week-

ends. The first weekend is the “BBQ Capital of Texas” Championship and Chili Cook-off on June 6

and 7. This opening weekend includes a Kick-off Party for Sponsors and Trail Bosses on Friday night

with live music, a Horseshoe Tournament on Saturday and of course fabulous BBQ and Chili by cook-

ers vying for points, trophies and cash prizes.

The festivities continue during the following week with Wednesday’s annual Cowboy Breakfast

on the Square. We encourage our citizens to dress western for this day and then Thursday out to the

City Park for the Queen Coronation and Awesome Auction followed by the band Soundwave. Friday

night features Vallejo in the Amphitheater and new this year, a Tejano Night in the Main Pavilion. The

Chamber is offering a special Class Reunion Gathering Place at the City Park on Friday for Reunion

Classes to come after decorating their floats for the Grand Parade.

Speaking of the Grand Parade, it is on Saturday at 10 a.m, with 150 plus entries. Of course there

will be tons of great music for everyone to enjoy on two stages again on Saturday with several local

bands in the Main Pavilion and Roger Creager headlining on Saturday in the Amphitheater.

With everything that makes up CTR, remember that the Button is always your best value for ad-

mission for the locals. Buttons can only be purchased in advance from a CTR Queen’s Court candidate

or at the Chamber office, and for only $10 each. You get gate access all weekend plus a $2 discount

on tickets to the Rodeo. But if you miss out on the Button, the small gate admission gets you into the

Park and parking is always free. With the crowd we are expecting on Saturday night for Roger Creager,

remember there is a free shuttle service from the Square as well.

Welcome back to the 42nd annual Chisholm Trail Roundup! Everyone knows that CTR is

Lockhart’s largest festival and tourism event!

If you are a chili or barbecue cook, then try your hand at the June 6-7 Chili and Best BBQ

in Texas Championship. Best bring your “A game,” because there are some great cooks coming

to town… and some that already live here! There will be softball and horseshoes. The frizbee

golf course will be open for play and the skate park will challenge all comers!

The following Wednesday morning from 6:30 - 9 a.m., the annual Cowboy Breakfast, spon-

sored by First Lockhart National Bank, will serve the best chuckwagon breakfast you’ll ever

eat! You haven’t had a biscuit until you’ve had one of these fresh out of his skillet!!

CTR really gets going Thursday night with the opening of the carnival, the crowning of the

CTR queen and the Awesome Auction benefitting Project Graduation.

Saturday morning, there will be one of the best parades in Central Texas with over 150 floats.

Through Saturday night there will all kinds of family activities, food, old cowboy fun gunfights,

craft booths, music on two stages with Roger Creager highlighting Saturday night! It will be

time for all of the High School reunions to see old friends. It’s just a good time to sit under the

pavilion and see people you haven’t seen in a while!

Our historic square will be on hand for free parking and shuttle service to the park. Our shops

and boutiques will be open for business. The Historic Caldwell County Courthouse will be

open for tours and you might want see how the Clark library restoration is doing as we put the

finishing touches to her. It’s time for Lockhart and the Chamber of Commerce to put our best foot forward! Come

Every year, some of Lock-hart’s finest young ladies cometogether in the spirit of friendlycompetition and communitypromotion, as they raise moneyfor the Lockhart Chamber ofCommerce, and compete forscholarships, prizes, and mostimportantly, the crown given tothe CTR Queen and to LittleMiss CTR.

This year’s candidates are:

Alissah Braniff The sole candidate for CTR

Queen is Alissah Braniff. Alis-sah is the daughter of Dennisand Jessica Spiller, of Dale.

Alissah hopes to pursue acareer in the medical field, andplans to attend Baylor Univer-sity, where she will seek abachelor’s degree in nursing. Inher spare time, she is an assis-tant catechist teacher at St.Mary’s of the Visitation CatholicChurch, and is a head cheercoach for Creedmore CoyoteYouth Football.

Alissah said she considersherself a “fashonista” and en-joys shopping. She also enjoysdancing in several styles, fromjazz to hip-hop to ballroom.Otherwise, her hobbies arecentered around the medicalfield, and around helping otherpeople.

At her former church parish,she received a Junior VolunteerAward, for clocking more than100 volunteer hours for thechurch. She has also receivedcertification for CPR/First AidQualification as a babysittertraining graduate by the USArmy Garrison in Hawaii.

Little Miss CTR CandidatesHaylee Castillo

Haylee, 10, is in the fifthgrade at Clear Fork Elemen-tary. She is the daughter ofLawrence Castillo and DaisyCastillo.

When she grows up, shewould like to be a designer. Sheis a cheerleader for the Pop

Warner youth football league,and she also plays softball inLockhart Little League. Shesaid her favorite subject inschool is math.

She said she thinks it wouldbe fun to be Little Miss CTR sothat she can have a new expe-rience and represent her town.

Taylor DredlaTaylor is the daughter of

Jason and Allison Dredla. Sheis in the second grade at ClearFork Elementary, and she iseight years old.

Jodi DavisJodi is six years old, and in

the first grade at Clear Fork El-ementary. She is the daughterof Patrick and Laurie Davis.

When she grows up, Jodiwould like to be a first-gradeteacher, so she can teach allsubjects. Her favorite thing todo is ride her bike. Jodi’s fa-vorite subject in school is math,because she likes to add.

Jodi thought it would be funto be Little Miss CTR, becauseshe will get to ride the float and

be in parades all over the state,just like her big sisters did.

Naomi KingNaomi is the daughter of

Billy and Maribel King. She is10 years old, and in the fourthgrade at Plum Creek Elemen-tary.

When she grows up, Naomiwould like to be a principal, andbuild a school for under-privi-leged children. She said thatshe loves drawing and spend-ing family time. Math is her fa-vorite subject in school.

Naomi said she thought itwould be fun to try out for LittleMiss CTR, because it is a greatnew learning experience.

Kylie MartinezKylie is eight years old, and

in the second grade at PlumCreek Elementary School. Sheis the granddaughter of Jesus

and Anabel Martinez. Kylie wants to be an actress

when she grows up, and her fa-vorite thing to do is be a fashiondesigner. She said that her fa-vorite subject in school is math.Kylie wants to be Little MissCTR, because she thinks itwould be fun to meet newfriends, and because she lovesLockhart.

Victoria Morales Victoria is the daughter of

Rufus Morales and KelseySchawe. She is eight years old,and in the second grade atPlum Creek Elementary.

When she grows up, Victoriawould like to be a dancer. Shesaid her favorite thing to do isplay tag with her friends. Victo-ria’s favorite subjects in schoolare language arts and reading,because she wants to be agood reader.

She thinks that it would befun to be Little Miss CTR be-cause she will be able to be aqueen, just by being herself.

Leah Nicole OvalleLeah is in the first grade at

Plum Creek Elementary. She issix years old, and is the daugh-ter of Robert Ovalle, III, andAshley Lartay.

When she grows up, Leahwould like to be a nurse, so thatshe can help people when theyare sick. She said her favoritething to do is read, and her fa-vorite subject in school is sci-ence.

Leah said it would be fun tobe Little Miss CTR because shewill get to go to different townsand meet new people.

The Chisholm Trail Roundup Rodeo and Music Festival offers some-thing for everyone - including those who like a little history with their en-tertainment.

All day Saturday, take a trip back in time to Lost Hope, Texas - an OldWest cattle town with a reputation for gruff gamblers, saucy showgirlsand black-hearted villains as mean as gut-shot bears.

Chaos reigns in the otherwise sleepy town while an over-extendedCity Marshall and a few kind-hearted barkeeps try to keep the peace - amammoth task in the face of gamblers cheating at cards, showgirls steal-ing from poker players and various and sundry villains and drunks, cheat-ing and stealing from everyone.

Be careful in Lost Hope! Sometimes, even the innocent are caught inthe crossfire as quarrels become bar brawls, and bar brawls becomeshootouts.

The Lost Hope Gunfighters perform every one to two hours through-out Lockhart City Park. Performances start around 3 p.m. and continueuntil sunset.

After several years of absence,the Rodeo came back to theChisholm Trail with a bang lastyear.

The Lockhart Chamber, alongwith dozens of rodeo sponsors,have been proud to partner withthe Diamond Cross Rodeo Com-pany to bring a full-scale rodeo toLockhart, with a three-year commit-ment for it to continue.

Last year, the CTR Rodeo wonthe prestigious “Best New Rodeo ofthe Year” award from the Cowboys’Professional Rodeo Association.

The rodeo is hosted in connec-tion with the rest of the CTR eventsat Lockhart City Park, and finalpreparations for the arena areunder way. The rodeo arena willover look the pond and parkingarea, in the “old softball field” nearthe pavilion “on the hill” at LockhartCity Park.

In addition to pro-rodeo events,20 local children each on Fridayand Saturday will be invited to par-ticipate in the time-honored tradi-tion of Mutton Bustin’, with allsafety gear being provided by Dia-mond Cross.

Mutton busters should be 8years or under, and weigh lessthan 60 pounds, and registration isavailable online at www.chisholm-trailroundup.com.

On Thursday night, admission isfree for the Slack Rodeo from 7:30– 9:30 p.m.

On Friday, admission for therodeo, which will go on from 7:30 –9:30 p.m., will be $10 at the gate,or $8 with a CTR button or TrailBoss armband.

Battle of Plum Creek military siteLockhart State Park and environs

are believed to be located within the

battle area, but archeological surveys ofthat area to date have produced noconclusive material remains relating tothe battlesite.

There is a Historical Marker com-memorating the Battle of Plum Creek inLion’s Park, on Highway 183 acrossfrom the HEB grocery store.

Andrew Lee Brock HistoricalMarker (402 S. Colorado St.)

Tennessee native Andrew LeeBrock (1830-1904) moved to CaldwellCounty in 1848, and he married Re-becca Montgomery Wayland. Twoyears later, Rebecca’s father gave the

couple a parcel of land on Boggy Creekas a wedding gift, and Brock built a logcabin on the site. Many of the twelvecommercial buildings financed by An-drew Lee Brock remain in use today. Inrecent years, the Friends of the BrockCabin have acquired funding and vol-unteer labor to restore this jewel inLockhart’s history, which remains underconstruction at Lion’s Park, and is ex-pected to open for public viewing laterin 2014.

Caldwell County Museum andVisitors Center (315 E. Market)Located in the historic Caldwell

County Jail, the museum offers self-guided tours and guided tours through-out several exhibits embracing CaldwellCounty History.

Dr. Eugene Clark Library (215 S.Main St.)

Built in 1899 and dedicated on July6, 1900, this library was financed withfunds bequeathed by Dr. Clark, whowas a prominent physician of Lockhartand San Antonio. It is the oldest contin-ually-operational library in the State ofTexas.

Susanna Dickinson Hanning(308 W. San Antonio)

At this site once stood the home ofSusanna Dickinson Hannig (1814-1883), who came to Texas from Ten-

nessee in 1831 with her husbandAlmeron Dickinson. He died at the Bat-tle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836. Su-sanna, with her daughter Angelina, wasamong the survivors. She carried newsof the Alamo’s capture to Gen. SamHouston, commander of the TexasArmy. Susanna settled in Lockhart in1855 and bought this property.

Lockhart Vocational HighSchool/Carver High School

(1104 E. Market)Now located on private property, the

“Old Carver School” was a project ofThe Rosenwald Foundation of Chicago,which funded many African Americanschools in the south in the early 20thcentury. The school district and localAfrican American citizens raised themajority of the funds for its completion.In 1946, the facility changed its name toG.W. Carver High School. It closed in1964 due to school integration.

Each year on the first Saturday ofMarch in conjunction with Texas Inde-pendence Day, the downtown Square ofLockhart becomes home to the LoneStar Grand Prix. Lockhart offers the mostunique racing track for go karts thatreach speeds of 100 mph. 

The annual Al Hopkins TolbertTexas State Chili Championship isheld the third weekend in March eachyear at the Lockhart City Park, 504 E.City Park Road. The cook-off is hostedby the Lockhart Chamber of Commerceand the City of Lockhart. The CentralTexas Tolbert Chili Group sponsors morethan 30 chili events all over CentralTexas and Lockhart is blessed to be justone of those locations.
