Here are our fascinating facts about this British institution…

    • ‘The Proms’ is short for ‘promenades’ - the original name for the concerts referencing the Promenaders (‘Prommers’) attending, who could stand and listen to inspiring music in a relaxed, informal setting.

    • The Proms are French. Well, the Proms are at least not a British invention. The concept started in France in the 1830s before moving to Britain shortly afterwards.

    • Henry Wood is the man most closely associated with developing the Proms into the international festival of music it is today. Wood directed the first BBC Proms in 1895, continuing to head them up for nearly 50 years until his death in 1944.

    • The founding aim of the Proms was to bring ‘serious music’ to the widest possible audience – and it remains a guiding principle of the Proms, with all events broadcast live across the BBC and affordable tickets

made available for the majority of events.

    • Over 2,500 attended the very first event in 1895, with popular works by Saint-Saëns, Haydn and Liszt, as well as London premieres of works by Chopin and Bizet.

    • The Proms has become increasingly experimental since the turn of the millennium, evolving away from its purely classical roots with electro-dance, rap and grime all adding to the eclectic atmosphere of the Proms over the last decade.

    • An inside joke for regular Prom-goers in the Royal Albert Hall is the Arena vs Gallery ‘heave-ho’ tradition. If a piano is wheeled in for a concerto, spectators in the Arena shout “Heave!” as the lid is being lifted, whilst ticketholders in the Gallery respond with a “Ho!”

    • One Proms spectator had a night to remember at the 1974 Proms. Patrick McCarthy bravely stepped in mid-performance to take the place of an unfortunate baritone who collapsed during

a performance of Carmina Burana. A professional singer who happened to be watching the Prom, Patrick boldly joined the choir to complete the performance, and received a well-deserved standing ovation.

    • ‘The Mushrooms’ have become an icon of the Royal Albert Hall, but they play a very significant role in maintaining sound quality during concerts. The building used to suffer from an echo effect due to the unusual shape of its ceiling, so in the 1960s fibreglass acoustic diffusers were installed on the ceiling to help improve the atmosphere, creating the ‘mushroom’ effect above the watching audience.

    • The Last Night of the Proms has become famous for its resounding renditions of Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia but in 1969, the BBC quietly decided to drop the segment. Following a public outcry, the decision was quickly reversed and it remains a highlight of the much-loved closing night of the festival.

Since first delighting London crowds in 1895, The Proms has become synonymous with British summertime. The eight-week annual feast of classical music traditionally runs every year from mid-July to mid-September, with major events primarily taking place at the Royal Albert Hall.

Research consistently suggests learning a second language can boost your brain power

Itatemoluptat arum nonsequamus sunto optam dolorectem. Nam idAlways secretly dreamed of learning a second language but fear you’ve left it too late to give it a try?Now might be the perfect opportunity to cast away your doubts, reassess, and delve into the unknown by taking on the challenge of learning a new language.

Research increasingly suggests learning a second language can have a huge impact on brain power, even if you only start learning later in life. Indeed, a fascinating decades-long study from the University of Edinburgh*, completed in 2014, dramatically revealed the positive impact acquiring a second language can have on the brain, at all stages in life.

Researchers examined the results of standardised intelligence tests taken by a group at age 11, and compared them with results of similar tests taken when group members reached the age of 73.

Participants in the study were tested on a number of physical and mental functions as they grew older, including changes in reasoning, memory, speed of thinking, as well as health and fitness.

Results from the lifetime study showed that those who spoke two or more languages had significantly better thinking skills in later life compared with what would be predicted from their IQ results in childhood. This trend even applied if the second language was acquired later in adulthood.

Here are just some of the cognitive advantages that various academic studies suggest can arise from learning a second language:

100 years ago the French artist Marcel Duchamp took a readymade gent’s urinal, turned it on its side, and proposed this reconfigured object as a work of art. The legacy of Duchamp’s iconic Fountain changed the course of creative history, firmly introduced conceptualism into art’s canon, and shaped the development of creative practice for the next century - remaining equally inspiring and controversial to this day.

This summer, to celebrate the centenary of this illustrious Readymade, City Lit Arts has curated a special programme of courses and exhibitions exploring art, objects and ideas: from pots to props, still life to assemblages, brooches to baskets, the summer school will celebrate objects and things as central to what artists and makers do, and interrogate what objects mean to us in the 21st Century.

Our summer school aims to not only explore Duchamp’s legacy, but celebrate the made object in a much

broader sense. As the artist Bob and Roberta Smith has declared ‘everything is made’, and the READYMADE programme seeks to celebrate this. So whether it’s fashioning a lump of clay into a precious pot, learning how to paint objects and their meanings, exploring the history of art objects and ideas, or constructing or reinventing your own art or design objects from found materials and images, City Lit Arts has the course to help you turn the everyday and insignificant into something much, much more...
