Mr. Bilbo Baggins, a common hobbit and creature of comfort, left his beloved hobbit hole for the great unknown. And, as the wizard predicted, he returned with an incredible story (and several new friends)! Since The Hobbit or There and Back Again was published in 1937, J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic novel has sold more than 100 million copies and hooked generations of readers on Bilbo’s tales of adventure.

This fall, we’re inviting you to share in the library’s opportunities for adventure. Begin with a new-to-you book series or author. With the flick of a page, you could fight crime during your lunch hour, time travel from a lawn chair, climb Mount Everest before bedtime, solve a mystery over coffee, or fall in love. Books are the original staycations.

Get crafty at a monthly DIY program or drop by the What’s Cooking Book Club and hang out with a group of creative home cooks. Sample dishes, swap recipes and meet fellow culinary adventurers.

Take advantage of the cooler weather to set out on a 30-minute self-guided tour of Washington Avenue’s Neoclassical Historic District using the Vamonde app. Tour with a friend and discover what life was like in the early 20th century.

Create a podcast, use the 3-D printer, or produce and edit a video in the library’s Technology Lab. Our librarians can walk you through the process. Call 236-5205 to reserve the lab. Visit our website for Open Lab times and dates.

When it comes to new adventures, children are naturals. The library is a comfortable place for them to experience hands-on learning in a relaxed environment. They can explore at their pace. From storytimes to activities such as Tween Book Club, Read to a Dog or Wonderlab, our Children’s & Family Services team has developed research-based programs designed to spark a lifelong love of learning.

At Oshkosh Public Library you don’t need to be a hobbit to experience a life of grand adventures. Everyone has the power to choose their own path. What will yours be?

Choose your adventure

Gandalf: “I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it’s very difficult to find anyone.”

Bilbo: “I should think so — in these parts! We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner! I can’t think what anybody sees in them.”

Gandalf: “You’ll have a tale to tell when you come back.” -J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit or There and Back Again
