Choosing Good Friends: A lesson from Alma the Younger and the Sons of MosiahPreparation: Read and Study Mosiah 26:1-13, 21-22, 29-32, Mosiah 27: 2, 8-12, 32-37, Alma 27:16-20, Alma 17:1-4 (both of the scriptures in Alma are describing the same meeting) Cut out the flannel board figures to use in retelling the story. Print out the three game boards as well as the game piece strips. Print off quote by Elder L. Tom Perry to hang on fridge. Gather ingredients to make refreshments together after the lesson. Objective: To illustrate the importance of choosing and surrounding yourself with good friends. And to recognize some ways you can be a good influence on your friends and others. Opening Song: Dare to Do Right Childrens Songbook #158 Introduction: Ask your children to describe some of their friends. What things do they have in common? What do they like to do together? We are going to talk about a group of friends and how they were bad and later good influences on each other. Story: Use visuals to tell the story of Alma the Younger. The story included with this lesson is from an old Instructor Magazine, an LDS church Magazine from before the 1970s. It only tells part of the story but I included it because it tells what the flannel board figures are and even how to display them. I love this figures! Discussion: Points you may want to bring up about this story: Mosiah 26:1 explain what the rising generation is. It sounds like the unbelievers may have been following the crowd. Mosiah 27:8 It says Alma the younger led people away to do after the manner of his iniquity. Relate that to peer pressure. Explain what peer pressure is. Mosiah 27:32 They were truly converted and suffered greatly to repair the damage they had done to the church. Alma 17:2 Explain that Alma the younger and the sons of Mosiah remained friends and lived the gospel and rejoiced in their friendship. After reading Alma 17:1-3 read this quote by Elder Perry, Do you see what happened? They remained true and faithful to their friendship and lived up to the standards they had set for each other. (New Era, February, 1993) Activity: Display the three game boards. Take turns picking out a strip and placing it on the appropriate game board.
