Printer CommunicationPrinter Communication

What is a Parallel port?Standard communication used byPrinter. Faster than serial, withmaximum data transfer speed of 150KBps. Utilised considerable amount ofCPU time.

What is Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP)?Also a parallel standard. Used forequipment requiring two-waycommunication. High speed datatransfer.

What is Extended Capability Port

(ECP)?Proposed by Microsoft and HP. Usedfor high performance parallelcommunication for printer and scanner.Fastest Parallel standard.

What are the cabling used? The cables used:

1. Standard parallel cable with 25-pinmale connector (DB25) at 1 end and a36-pin Centronics connector at theother end.

2. USB connectors. Used by newprinters. Faster data transfer.Maximum cable length is 5m.

Impact PrinterImpact Printer

How does impact printer work? Image is created by the printer

head striking the ink ribbon againstthe paper

Which are the 2 types of impactprinter?

Daisy wheel

Reasonably good printer but isnow obsolete

Dot-matrix printer

Use a array of pins (9 pins or 24pins)to strike the ribbon. The

24 pin produces higherresolution print. Use tractor tofeed the computer form(paper) through for printer

How is the printer speed measure?1. Characters per second (cps)

2. Lines per minutes

How is dot-matrix printer classified?

In ¶pins· as in 9-pin, 24-pin, 48-pin

printer

How is paper feed into the Dot-matrixprinter?

Tractor

Maintaining DotMaintaining Dot--Matrix PrinterMatrix Printer

How are the Impact Printersmaintained?

Clean the print head and lubricate thethe gears and pulleys according to themanufactures specifications

What are the possible problems?

White Bars on Text: Print head iseither dirty or dry. Clean with alcoholand if problem persists, change thehead.

Chopped Text: characters is choppedoff at the top or bottom. Print headneed to be adjusted.

Faded images: If the ribbon is stillgood, adjust the print head closer to

the platen. Otherwise, replaced theribbon.

Light to Dark: Adjust the platen

InkInk--jet Printers jet Printers

How does Ink-jet printer works? It works by ejecting heated liquid inkthrough tiny tubes (nozzles) towardsthe paper.

How is print quality measured?

Dots per inch (dpi)

How is print speed measured?

Pages per minutes (ppm)

What is the common problem with ink- jet printer?

The ink inside the jet tends to dry outwhen not in used for a relatively shortperiod of time. The solution is to movethe printer head to a special positionthat keeps the ink from drying.

This area are called ´parkµ or ´cleaningµor ́ maintenanceµ area.

Laser PrinterLaser Printer

What is the Photosensitive Drum?Aluminum cylinder, in the TonerCartridge, that is coated withphotosensitive compounds.

What is the Erase Lamp?

Expose the drum surface to the eraselight to clean up the drum.

What is the Primary Corona?

Located closed to the photosensitivedrive. Is charge to extremely highvoltage, enabling voltage to pass to the

drum and charge the photosensitivedrum to ²600V to ²1000V.

What is the function of the laser? It is used to write positive image ontothe drum. The drum area that is struckby the laser is discharge and left with100volts of negative charge.

What is Transfer Corona?

Transfer the image to the paper.

What is Toner?

Fine powder made up of plastic particlesbonded to iron particles. They areattracted to the drum surface hit by

the laser.

What is a Fuser?Consists of 2 rollers: pressure rollerand heated rollers.

The pressure roller presses the bottomof the paper while the heated rollerwhich presses the top of the paper and

melts the toner into the paper.

What is print quality measured?

Dot per inch (dpi)

How is the printing speed measured?Pages per minutes (ppm)

1. Cleaning A rubber cleaning blade clean the drum. It is alsoelectrically clean of charges.

2. Conditioning Drum is by negatively charged by Primary Corona tobetween ²600 volts to ²1000 volts

3. Writing A laser draws out a positive charge image on the drum.Anywhere the laser strikes, the negative charge isreduced

4. Developing Toner is transferred to the drum

5. Transferring Transfer Corona attracts image off the drum onto thepaper by using +600V

6. Fusing Fusing roller heat and pressure the toner to the paper

Printer LanguagesPrinter Languages

What are the common printerlanguages?

ASCII (American Code forInformation Interchange)

PCL (Printer Control Language)

Postscript

Windows GDI

What is ASCII?

Standard set of character codes torepresent English characters asnumbers. It has control codes fortransferring data and controlling of

printer.

What is PCL?Designed by HP. PCL6 supports scalablefonts. Dependent on the printer, iemust be supported by the printer.

What is Postscript?A Page Description Language developed

by Adobe. It is independent of printer. The print file is portable (generate onone machine but also printable onanother machine) Printing process ishandled by the printer, not the CPU andtherefore faster.

What is GDI?Graphical Device Interface. OS handlesthe printer process through the CPU.The completed print job is then sent tothe printer.

Maintaining Laser PrinterLaser Printer

Which are of the printer do you need toclean?

Periodically clean the inside of theprinter of paper dust and excessivetoner. The best time to clean is whenchanging the toner cartridge.

What the items need to be periodicallyreplaced?

The items to be replaced are:

Ozone filter

Fuser assembly

Transfer Corona

Paper guides/rollers Thermal fuse

Common Laser Printer ProblemsCommon Laser Printer Problems

What are the problems with LaserPrinter?

Blank Paper: Printer may be out ofToner or the Transfer corona hasfailed.

Ghosting: Ghost images appears atregular interval. The drum is not fullydischarged or the previous image usedto much toner.

Blotch Print: Uneven dispersion of

toner, especially the toner is low. Tryshaking the toner side to side and printagain.

Spotty Print: Appearing at regularintervals indicate either drum isdamaged or some toner is suck to thefuser roller.

Creased pages: Use different type ofpaper

Poor quality print: toner low or usingcheap/wrong paper

Paper jam: cheaper paper used, wrongtype, store improperly or loaded

improperly

Laser memory errors: not enough RAM

What are the 3 components of printingin Win9x?

There are the printer, print driver andthe printer spooler.

How does printer take place in Win9x?

The application sends the print job tothe printer spooler. The spooler workswith the print driver to format theprint job in the language understand bythe printer. It is temporarily stored inthe hard disk (spooled) and then sendto the printer.

What are the common types of PortablePC?

Notebook

Sub-Notebook

Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)

What are the types of battery used inNotebook?

Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cd)

Has battery memory problem where itlost certain amount of rechargeabilityif it is not discharged fully before

charging

Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH)

Less problem than Nickel-Cadmiumbattery. Last longer betweenrecharging.

Lithium Ion (Li-Ion)

Last twice as long as Ni-MH with 1charging. Do not have battery memoryproblem.

Power ManagementPower Management

What are the 2 Power ManagementStandards?

Advanced Power Management (APM) andAdvanced Configuration and PowerInterface (ACPI)

Where do you configure the Power

Management option?Through BIOS or Windows. Windowssetting will overwrite BIOS settings.

In Windows, go to Control Panel, PowerManagement applet to configure PowerManagement options.

What is Hibernation?

Hibernation mode takes everything inactive memory and stores it on the harddisk just before the system powersdown. When the PC comes out ofhibernation, Windows reloads all thefiles and applications into the RAM.

In what situation will Hibernation notwork?

Hibernation will not work if there is notenough hard disk space.
