Sam Gri》ths
Athlete Biography
London Olympian Sam Gri》ths will compete at his second Games at Rio 2016 on the 13 –year-old
Irish Sport Horse Paulank Brockagh.
In 1995, Gri》ths moved to the United Kingdom to peruse his equestrian career. He trained and
worked as a back-up rider for dual Olympic gold medallist Matt Ryan for three years, training and
competing at all levels of horse events. The Melbourne born athlete had his מrst taste of
international success when he won team gold and individual silver at the Asia/Paciמc
Championships in 2003.
After being shortlisted for the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Games, Gri》ths’ Olympic dream came
to fruition in 2012 when he was a reserve and then called up after two of his teammates’ horses
were injured (Shane Rose and Megan Jones.) Gri》ths fell from Happy Times in the cross country
phase. Australia eventually placing sixth.
The UK based rider won the 2014 Badminton Horse Trials CCI4* with Paulank Brockagh. The same
year, he placed 16th individually and fourth in the team event at the World Equestrian Games in
Normandy.

in쵟uence on his sporting career. The couple live on the Dorset/Somerset border with their two
young children Ollie and Eliza.

Personal Motto You can have trainers saying things to you consistently but sometimes you just
have to work it out for yourself
Most In剩വuential person in your career/life My wife Lucy
Why this sport? My older brother took it seriously, which meant I received his outgrown ponies
and horses. With two brothers into eventing, the family would all go away together for the
weekend.

Shane Rose
Athlete Biography
Rio 2016 is Shane Rose’s fourth Olympic Eventing selection however he has been forced to
withdraw from the Team twice previously with injuries to his horses. Rose will take the Rio stage
with his 13-year-old grey gelding CP Quali㿵슐ed, and he is due some better Olympic luck. He is ranked
㿵슐fth in the world rankings.
After some early success in his international career, Rose was selected to compete at the 1996
Atlanta Games, but his horse Mr Joe Cool went lame in the journey to the USA and he was unable
to compete. It was 12 years later when his Olympic dream was realised for the Beijing 2008 Games.
Competing in Hong Kong, Rose and horse All Luck helped Australia win silver in the Team event,
with the pair clocking the best cross country round of the event. He also placed 27th in the
Individual event at his debut Games.
Rose was devastated when his horse Taurus, who he had been preparing for 㿵슐ve years, was unable
to compete at the London Olympics after he pulled up lame with a shoulder injury. Rose was forced
to withdraw from his second Olympic appearance.
The Sydney born rider was a member of the fourth placed Australian Eventing Team at the World
Equestrian Games in Normandy, 2014. The following year he guided two horses to 㿵슐nish 1st and
2nd at the 2015 Australian International Three Day Event CCI4* (CP Quali㿵슐ed and Virgil).
Rose began riding horses at his local pony club when he was young, the same time he was
competing in junior rugby union representative teams. He turned his focus solely to riding after a
six month stint in the United Kingdom testing himself out in the sport. With a degree in horse
management, Rose lives an hour west of Sydney in Werombi where he owns a property called
Bimbadeen Park with wife Niki, which o䁆ers services for race and performance horses.

Stuart Tinney
Athlete Biography
Stuart Tinney made his Olympic debut 16 years ago at the Sydney Games with great success. He
will compete at his third Games at Rio 2016 in the Eventing section, the riding veteran will compete
on the 17-year-old grey gelding Pluto Mio.
The Queenslander was part of the victorious three-day eventing Team at Sydney 2000 with Andrew
Hoy, Phillip Dutton and Matt Ryan. Australia has won this event on four occasions, with the last
three victories being at successive Olympic Games – Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney
2000. Tinney, on Jeepster, was the only Australian-based member of the team and was the best
ranked of all the riders in the event. If it was run under the new format he would have also won the
Individual gold.
Four years later in Athens, Tinney placed 38th for the Individual and sixth overall in the Team
section.
The four-time World Equestrian Games athlete placed 11th in the 2014 tournament in Normandy,
France.
Tinney married his wife Karen in 1993 and together they run a 30-acre horse training centre one
hour from the centre of Sydney with their two daughters, Gemma and Jaymee.
