My dear people of Christ Church Cathedral and our Guests,

Happy Mother’s Day! On this sixth Sunday of Easter, we think of our mothers—and all of the men and women who have nurtured us. Later in this service, we will give thanks for and pray God’s blessings upon them all. That prayer is on page 8. In addition, the Chapel is dressed to help us reflect upon Mary, the mother of our Lord.

The month of May brings the Feasts of Pentecost (May 24) and the Most Holy Trinity (May 31). In June, we will keep the Feast of Corpus Christi (June 7). These will be exciting days. On Trinity Sunday, we begin a summer of Enriching Our Worship (EOW), Prayer 2. EOW is a Eucharistic Prayer produced by the National Church Standing Liturgical Commission in 1998 and was later approved for use by General Convention. It will not be new to you—Christ Church Cathedral has used it before. In EOW, you will recognize the familiar shape of the Eucharistic prayer that we hear every Sunday: the Sursum Corda (‘the Lord be with you; and also with you’ ...), the Sanctus (‘Holy, holy, holy’ ...) and the Great AMEN. If you have not experienced EOW, you might enjoy its simplicity. In any case, let me know what you think once we begin on May 31. You can reach me at 502-632-3213.

Downtown Episcopal Outreach (DEO) DEO addresses gap needs that arise in service agencies throughout central Louisville. Using the Dean’s Discretionary Fund, and working with outreach partners including Central Louisville Community Ministries, Our Merciful Savior Episcopal Church and St. George’s Episcopal Church, we help with expenses such as ID application fees, prescription drugs, utilities, and some transportation costs. You can help by contributing to the Dean’s Discretionary Fund, and by putting coins and bills in the DEO Piggy Bank.

Prayer for Mother’s DayGod our Creator, we pray for mothers: for new mothers, coming to terms with new responsibility; for expectant mothers, wondering and waiting; for those who are tired, stressed or depressed; for those who struggle to balance the tasks of work and family; for those who are unable to feed their children due to poverty; for those whose children have physical, mental or emotional disabilities; for those who have children they do not want; for those who raise children on their own; for those who have lost a child; for those who care for the children of others; for those whose children have left home; for those whose desire to be a mother has not been fulfilled; for all men and women who have mothered the next generation.

Bless them—that their love may be deep and tender, and that they may lead our children to know and do what is good, living not for themselves alone, but for God and for others. Amen.
