Life in all its fullness (John 10:10) Christ Church CE (VC) Primary School Summer Newsletter 2019 Dear Parents and Carers From beginning to end, this term was filled with amazing learning opportunities, shared events and many special moments. This week and last, we have celebrated all the hard work that has taken place this year and it was wonderful to see so many families enjoying our Open Afternoon. The Leavers’ Services, in Church and school, were occasions where we could join together to share memories with laughter … and a few tears! We send our prayers and good wishes for the future, with all of our leavers. Later in this newsletter you will find a message from the PTA. Many of our parents and families have supported the events throughout the year and we are grateful for that support. However, I would like to send my personal thanks to Mrs Metcalfe and Mrs Clos who have guided others and facilitated many events. I know that without these two ladies the PTA would not have had such a successful year. I am very pleased to tell you that work on the upper playground will begin shortly. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, the administration process has taken longer than we would have liked and therefore the work will start on the 16 th September but should be completed within 7 days. This is very exciting news! At the end of the newsletter, I have included some dates for the new term. An early date for your diary though is Education Sunday. For well over a hundred years, there has been an annual recognition of Education Sunday in England and Wales. It is a national day of prayer and celebration for everyone in the world of education and this year we will be celebrating on Sunday 15 th September at Christ Church. The children will be handing out the books, acting as servers, reading and singing songs as well as being a part of the service as a whole. A letter will be sent in September, but we wanted as many of our families as possible to ‘save the date’. Grateful thanks are sent from all staff to parents and children for the lovely cards, flowers and gifts that have been given. It is lovely to know that every member of staff is recognised for their dedication to the children in our school. Some of the words written by the children in their thank you cards have created more tears! Thank you to those parents who shared their views and comments with us through the questionnaire and the question / answer sheets at the Open Afternoon; whilst we will be taking some time to rest and relax, we will be considering all of the ideas put forward to ensure that next term gets off to a flying start. For now though, I hope you enjoy reading about all that has been happening in school this term. I wish you all a peaceful and restful summer. Mrs Cooper

Dear Parents and Carers From beginning to end, this term was filled with amazing learning opportunities, shared events and many special moments. This week and last, we have celebrated all the hard work that has taken place this year and it was wonderful to see so many families enjoying our Open Afternoon. The Leavers’ Services, in Church and school, were occasions where we could join together to share memories with laughter … and a few tears! A message from Mrs Pamela Reader, Chair of Governors Dear Parents/Carers This is the first of a termly report from The Governors of Christ Church CE [VC] Primary School. We have eight governors who meet once a term with Mrs Cooper, to set and monitor the strategic direction of the school. We have a mixture of experienced and new governors who have worked together to ensure that: 1. There is clear vision, ethos and strategic direction and that all stakeholders understand this. 2. We hold the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils. 3. We oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure that money is well spent. We have individual responsibilities including visiting the school to monitor the priorities of the School Improvement Plan, attending special events and supporting the school at both educational and community events. We intend to publish a full Governors Annual Report in September 2019 and plan to have Governor Forums in the next academic year. We wish to thank Mrs Cooper, all the staff and the children for their hard work this year; especially the Year 6 children for their excellent SATS results. You all deserve a well-earned super summer holiday! A message from the PTA Firstly, we want to say a huge thank you for all your support during the last year. We are delighted to share with you that we have raised £5,400! Secondly, we want to bring to your attention that the PTA has been running without a Chairperson for the majority of the year. If anyone would like more information or just wants to be involved in any way, please email [email protected] We will be holding our AGM in school on Tuesday 10th September at 3.20pm, supervision will be available for children. Please come along, even if it is just to bring a smile! Have a great summer!

Class 1 Yet another term has flown by! In English this term Year 1 have written two books! The first was the children’s own version of ‘The Tiger who Came to Tea’ and the second was a non-fiction fact book. In maths, children have been practising multiplying and dividing by sharing out different items. They have focused on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and this led onto recognising coins and using money. As part of our R.E topic about being special, we were lucky enough to be able to go to the local church where Reverend Alex conducted a Christening for a baby doll. The children learned how people are welcomed into religious ‘families’. Additionally, we learned about the rituals involved in welcoming a baby into the Muslim faith.

The children have loved learning all about plants and how they grow. They have carried out lots of practical activities including planting seeds and seeing how they grow. We have also had fun planting and caring for our garden in the lower playground. They children have been enjoying

tasting the fruits of

their labour

DT this term has been all about food. The children have learnt about

food hygiene and practised preparing food. They had a lovely time tasting different foods to see which they liked and have enjoyed making vegetable kebabs, fruit smoothies and pizzas.

Near the end of term, the children enjoyed a team-building day including a visit to High Adventure.

Great fun was had by all!

Class 2 What a fantastic Summer term we have had. It’s been a busy term with lots of exciting learning taking place. In PE, we have been enjoying the weather as much as we can and have been able to have most of our PE lessons outside. The children have been practicing their throwing and catching using chest passes and have played a number of games to help develop these skills.

In Science, Year 1 and Year 2’s topic has been all about plants. Both year groups have enjoyed planting and nurturing their own cress and beans. In Year 2, the children have carried out a number of experiments to discover the best conditions for growing their plants. They also predicted the outcomes before potting and sowing the seeds. Over the weeks, they have completed a plant diary to record their observations.

In Computing, we have been re-creating famous works of art using the programme Paint. We have studied Monet, Pointillism and Pop Art. The children have amazed us with the skills they have developed this year and they are becoming more confident in opening and saving their own work independently. In DT, the children have enjoyed learning about different types of meals from around the world. We have researched, made and tasted some Mexican food. We also researched Italian food and had a fantastic morning making our own pizza at Pizza Express. As you can see from the photos, the children look like professional chefs!

In Art with Mrs Coughlin, the children designed a clay pot. They then practiced the skills to be able to mould and stick the clay together to create a finger pot. Once dried the children were able to paint their pots in bold colours or with patterns and they looked amazing. These are only some of the learning and activities that have taken place over the Summer Term in Class 2. We hope your child has had as much fun as we have had this year!

Class 3 This term in English we have been looking at persuasive letters and poetry. We began by looking at the features of a persuasive letter then as a group they looked at both sides of the argument around

a particular topic. Before the children wrote their letters, they had to decide whether to persuade for or against a certain topic. In poetry, the children have been writing acrostic and shape poems with a summer theme. They enjoyed learning the poem called ‘Walking with my Iguana’ and performing it using a range of actions and instruments.

In Design Technology, we have been learning about textiles with our focus on the children making a pillow for themselves. We began by drawing out some designs before the children decided on their favourite one. We then practised our sewing skills using a running stitch. The children then began to cut out felt and sew this onto the front of their pillow. Finally, we sewed around the outside of the felt to complete our pillow. The children have very much enjoyed making their pillows and were very proud of what they had made.

This term we have enjoyed learning how to play tennis down at Skipton Tennis Club with Coach Adam. We have enjoyed having the opportunity to play on tennis courts allowing us the space to play mini games. We have been learning lots of new tennis skills and have all become more confident tennis players. We have also enjoyed trying out our new team building equipment and had a lot of fun doing so.

Class 4 We have had an extremely busy and exciting Summer term in Class 4! In PE, we have had the opportunity to go to Sandylands for tennis

lessons. The children really enjoyed playing on full tennis courts and we ended our sessions with a very competitive tug-of-war! The Year 4’s spent an afternoon at Ermysted’s Grammar School for their Ultimate Roman Challenge where they took part in many

competitions against other schools under the watchful eye of the Emperor! They also loved the trip to Catterick Army Barracks, learning all about the Armed Forces.

We all enjoyed our team building morning and trip to High Adventure. Although some of the activities were nerve-racking, everyone tried their best!

During the term, we have completed different team challenges including a Christian Aid challenge, thinking about the consequences of flooding and a Squashed Tomato challenge, where we had to transport tomatoes without squashing them. What a great end to the year!

Class 5 In English the children have really enjoyed reading the adventure book ‘The Explorer.’ They have completed some fantastic writing, including their own chapter from the story. In Art, we have been looking at how to create texture and blending using chalk and oil pastels. The children have produced some lovely pictures of animals in the Amazon Rainforest.

This half term in PE Class 5 have been learning a dance routine with Howard. They have worked hard to create their own dance moves and together they came up with a whole class choreography, which they performed. They have also enjoyed the tennis sessions at Sandylands with Adam; it has been great to see how they have developed their skills. After working so hard for their SATs, the year 6 children really enjoyed their trip to the trampoline park where they raced each other on the obstacle course, flew around on the zip wire and had a go on the climbing wall. A lot of fun was had by all, including the staff!

The whole school had a fantastic day when they went to High Adventure and then completed the team building activities in school. The year 6 children were very competitive in the board walk challenge and there was some great team work going on!

Sport in School Yet another busy term for all at Christ Church! The events for this term are as follows: Class 1 attended a balance festival at Greatwood School. They had a great time trying out a range of activities based around improving coordination and balance. Children from Year 3 and Year 5/6 represented the school at a Tag Rugby Festival. One of our Year

5/6 teams came 3rd and went through to the final stage. We have attended two football events this term (Greatwood Cup and Richard Mason Cup) and played well against other schools in and around Skipton. Tennis coaching at Skipton Tennis Club for Class 3, 4 and 5. The children had the opportunity to play on the tennis courts to develop their skills and play mini matches.

Children from Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 represented the school at a Tennis Tournament playing against other schools. Well done everyone who attended! Swimming Lesson for Class 1 and 5. Dance lessons for Class 5 with coach Howard. The children have very much enjoyed their dance sessions this term. The whole school had a wonderful trip to High Adventure in Cowling. Each class had the opportunity to try out three activities ranging from labyrinth, bouldering, high ropes, team building activities and high ropes for the older children. Finally, the children have been enjoying trying out our new team building equipment. We hope you had a chance to try some of the equipment out during our Open Afternoon.

From September, the price of a school meal will remain at £2.30. Children moving into Year 3 will no longer be eligible for a ‘universal infant free school meal’. Please follow the link to check if you you may be eligible for free school meals https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/free-school-meals

Uniform We are proud of our school and our uniform and ask that all families support us in ensuring their child is dressed in line with the uniform policy, which includes trousers, skirts, pinafores or shorts but no leggings please. School uniform can now be bought from either of the school uniform shops in Skipton: Skip to School http://www.skiptoschool.co.uk/ MC Sports http://www.mcsports.org.uk/ Both shops have a good selection of uniform, including the tartan style skirt and pinafore. In addition, Skip to School are selling a new style school hoody which can be worn as part of our uniform and is useful for additional warmth in the autumn term.

Clubs The new clubs letter (for the autumn term) will be sent out during the first week of the September term. It is hoped that clubs will begin during w/c 9th September.

Mobile phones Please remember that all mobile phones should be handed in to the school office at the beginning of every day. Only those children who are walking to and from school on their own should have a mobile phone in school and should not use them when on school premises.

Communication

We have many different methods of communicating with parents, including the home/school

link books, the notice board and the school website. Our main method of communication is

ParentMail and we ask that all parents who haven’t yet done so, sign up to this as soon as

possible. Thanks you.
