Hi Everyone
As I sit at my desk and type this letter of introduction, our world is a
far cry from that we knew some 10 weeks ago. We have a new word
in our vocabulary ‘Lock down’! that has deprived us of our freedom
and the physicality of shaking hands or giving someone a huge hug.
However, this keeps us safe from this awful virus that has claimed so
many lives. I know for me the thought of not seeing your loved ones
or waving them off in an ambulance not to see them again, will be
etched in my memory for ever, as with the funerals I’ve conducted
during this time
It would be remiss of me to write a jolly old letter of introduction
without mentioning our world today. But we are seeing green shoots
of things returning to a small element of normality. So much so that
we are now able to move into the Rectory on Tuesday 19th May, just
in time to unpack and take a week’s rest, before beginning my
ministry with you
I am very much reminded of the well known reading from Ecclesiastes
(3:1-8) ‘Everything has its time’ and it is with eager anticipation and
joy that my time has come to join you initially as your Priest in
Charge on 2nd
June via Zoom (details to follow). To be followed when
we are out of lock down with a second licensing
as Rector. Boy what a celebration that will be!
Graham, Barney and Megan (our two Yorkshire
Terriers) and I can’t wait to meet you all and
begin our next chapter. I know it will be a huge

blessing as we worship and live our Christian lives together.
There is so much I’m sure you want to know about my journey with
Christ, but perhaps we’ll leave that for another day.
There are many reasons why I felt God called me to be with you. One
of them was the words used on your profile.
‘To know Christ and to make him known’
I hope this is included in your prayers, for if we truly know Christ, why
would we not want that to be the case for everyone?

Children’s News!
We will start this month with celebrating some Birthdays: Happy Birthday to Nathan Porter who will be 10yrs old on the 3rd Phoebe Parsons is 9yrs old on the 15th and Maddy Winter will be 11yrs old on the 30th A Happy Birthday from everyone at Christ Church. Usually I fill this column with news of activities and events coming up dur-ing the month, but for once in my life my diary is empty and like every-one else awaiting news of when we can start arranging to meet again. We will all look back on this time with mixed feelings and emotions. I would like the children to keep some of the things they have been doing whilst they have been at home and bring them along when we next see them as I want to display their work on a board in the hall. Doesn't have to be just what we might learn in Church, anything they have enjoyed doing but no homework, their teachers will want that!! Looking ahead to July, there are plans to start some form of Children's Church again on the 1st Sunday of the month, which will be on the 5th. Either on zoom or if allowed in the Church. Either way we need to keep contact with our families, so look out for more details. First Sunday in June on the 7th will be Jules first Sunday as our minister, so that will be a combined communion service with Tickenham probably still using zoom. I said my diary is empty but God opens up opportunities some days to have contact with families that we know at Church or out in the

Community. This is an amazing time to go through as we have more time during the day to show God's love and compassion. If there are any children getting bored and would like some activities and craft

Both of our churches remain closed until allowed to reopen. Louise will split the
morning working partly from home but also in the office to check mail and phone

DELIVERING THE NEWS
For a long time now Richard has done a fantastic job as our Christ
Church webmaster. Although he is anxious to focus on other aspects of
his important Reader Ministry, in the absence of a successor he contin-
ues to work extremely hard to enable those of us with computers, lap-
tops, tablets and mobile phones to keep abreast with church news via
our website.
However about half of you reading this will be doing so in the usual pa-
per form as you don’t have access to the internet, and thus the church
website, or you have pre-paid for magazine delivery this year.
As it seems it could be quite a while before we are all back at church
together again we would like to get our means of communication a little
more fine-tuned. So, if you have had a paper magazine delivered but
are actually able to read it online please email Louise and let her know.
If on the other hand you come across someone who needs to have a
paper magazine and hasn’t had one delivered please ring Liz Everitt
(851174). Ask around as you chat on the phone, whilst standing in the
supermarket queue or when passing other church members whilst out
for a walk and let’s all try to get this right.

. Christian summer events and travel agencies hard hit by crisis
A number of Christian travel companies face possible financial ruin in
the wake of the Covid-19 virus.
Companies affected include: Lightline Pilgrimages (to the Holy Land),
Oak Hall Expeditions, Pax Travel, and McCabe Pilgrimages (which
would have handled travel to the Oberammergau Passion Play this sum-
mer – now postponed until 2022.) Ironically, the Oberammergau Pas-
sion Play has its roots in the plague in Germany in 1633.
Meanwhile, here in the UK, the following events have been abandoned
for this year: Spring Harvest, New Wine, the Walsingham Youth Pil-
grimage, Focus (for churches on the Holy Trinity Brompton network),
and Greenbelt.

As this is being written (23 April, St George’s Day) the country as a
whole is sincerely hoping that by the time this is read towards the
end of May or during June, some Government restrictions will have
been lifted. Whatever our thoughts and opinions are, here within the
Tyntesfield Medical Group area, we are extremely fortunate to live
where there is plenty of opportunity to get out and take exercise,
and we have been blessed (to date) with perfect weather for so do-
ing. It is evident from those out and about, on foot or bikes, that lots
of people of all ages are doing just that, possibly discovering walks
and lanes they never knew about before, and enjoying all the won-
derful sights that spring brought us.
Exercise is key to having healthy legs and indeed to our wellbeing as
a whole. So please, if you have developed the habit of taking daily
exercise, continue to do so and keep it as part of your routine, eve-
ryone will benefit in the long term.
Nailsea District Leg Club will be up and operating again as soon as
we can, may be a while yet, but don’t forget we will be back. In the
meantime those that need care or advice, the surgeries are only a
‘phone call away.

Remember traffic jams?
One good thing about the lockdown is that you’ll have spent less hours
stuck in traffic this Spring.
Recent research has found that in 2019, car-using commuters lost an
average of 115 hours stuck in traffic. No surprises that London was
the most congested, with people losing 149 hours over the year. After
all, London comes 8th in the world for bad traffic jams.
Belfast was the next worst, with 112 hours lost per commuter. That is
closely followed by Bristol (103 hours), Edinburgh (98 hours), and
Manchester (92 hours).
London and Edinburgh have tied for the title of UK’s slowest-moving
city centre, with the average speed being about 10mph.

News from Kingshill Church School
I am writing this just after the Prime Minister’s announcement that
schools may begin to reopen on 1st June. There has been a deluge of
communications to all in school communities this week, to staff, gover-
nors and parents, and by the time you read this all may have become
rather clearer.
A joint letter sent to parents on 11th May from the CEO of the Bath
and Wells Multi Academy Trust and Mrs Thomson our headteacher
says
“I would like to reassure you all that the health and safety of each of
your children and school staff is always our absolute priority. All our
planning for any return to school will have this as our main aim.”
Planning for and implementing the return is hugely complicated, so
please pray for all involved, not least for the parents who will bear the
responsibility of deciding whether to send their children to school. I
can only think that the last time parents had to make this sort of deci-
sion was at the beginning of World War 2 when city children were
evacuated.
Meanwhile the whole Kingshill Community is pulling together to look
after each other and provide love, security and learning for the chil-
dren. The Friday newsletters, available for you too to enjoy on the
school website, are brilliant, with lots of photos of the children partici-
pating in an amazing range of activities at home, in their gardens and
out and about in our local countryside. Each week Mrs Thomson also
includes the sort of Christian message that would be part of an assem-
bly. A thought and a story which give lots to think about.
Every weekday, including the VE Bank Holiday, our Keyworkers’

Children have been cared for and helped to carry out the home learning
activities at school. The staff are working on a rota basis as it’s quite
demanding ensuring even a small group of children observe the required
social distancing and hygiene requirements! Children with a birthday get
a special birthday phone call and a mention on the newsletter, and Mrs
Thomson has phoned all the families of children due to start in the re-
ception class in September.
Some staff work each day contacting families by phone and distributing
food parcels to those families who normally rely on free school meals
and snacks at breakfast and after school club to eke out the family budg-
et. Tesco and Waitrose are being very generous with their Fairshare con-
tributions which help with this.
There is so much to pray about at the moment, but I do hope you will
find time to use the information here to pray for Kingshill, our church
primary school.

Faith in action around the World
Some examples showing how Mothers’ Union are responding to
COVID-19.
In this country, Mothers’ Union Members are making scrubs, scrub
bags, masks, and headbands which have been welcomed at many
hospitals.
In Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), before
COVID-19 had reached the country, a meeting was held to encourage
church leaders to engage in fighting COVID-19 in the area. They
focused the meeting around the scriptures to emphasise responding
with compassion and love, whilst highlighting the importance of
ensuring that proper hygiene practices are followed and gave practical
advice on how to do this.
Marthe Vira, Mothers’ Union Provincial President in the DRC and a
nurse herself, presented on the evolution of the pandemic at a global
and national level, its origin, the routes of contamination, the
diagnosis, prevention measures as well as treatment of the disease.
The presentation was followed by a series of questions and answers.
Marthe then led a demonstration on how protective masks could be
made in homes using basic materials. Everyone at the meeting were
then able to make their own masks! Marthe then finished the session
with a session on “how to wash your hands effectively”. By presenting
this to Church leaders they themselves were able to go into their own
parishes and communities to share the knowledge and advice.
Never one to rest on her laurels, Marthe and other Mothers’ Union
members have been providing demonstrations of how to wash hands
properly and make homemade masks to the general public by setting
up makeshift stands on streets – they have even created songs to help
with this teaching.

‘North Somerset Child Contact Centre
A Child Contact Centre is a safe, neutral place where the children of sepa-
rated families can meet with their non-resident parent. The North Somerset
Centre operates twice a month in Clevedon or Nailsea and is run and man-
aged by the Mothers' Union. It is staffed by a team of volunteers, male and
female, who are all DBS cleared and trained. This is a valuable service
bringing much happiness to "absent parents" and their children. Referrals
are always welcome and a few more volunteers would also be gratefully
welcomed. If you feel that you could spare a couple of hours on a Saturday
afternoon occasionally, or would like more information please phone Sylvia

In the Asian country of Myanmar, many members are in remote villages
so are unable to access text messaging etc. However, Mothers’ Union’s
Community Development Co-ordinators mostly have internet access so
they work to get messages out.
In Burundi, East Africa, members are supporting the most vulnerable
families with seeds so they can grow their own kitchen gardens in lock-
down. They are also active in ensuring accurate messaging reaches
their communities. This is happening through more than nine hundred
Mothers’ Union Literacy Co-ordinators.
Meanwhile, in South Sudan, Mothers’ Union is also focusing on getting
accurate information in different languages to the Protection of Citizen
camps surrounding the capital city, Juba. In the camps, social distanc-
ing is an even greater challenge because of the living conditions. There-
fore, the importance of good handwashing is an essential message to
get across.
By mobilising the Church and its leaders back in March, as well as their
communities, Mothers’ Union hoped that as the pandemic reached
them they were more prepared with facts and advice to support their
communities tackle the virus in the most effective way possible.

Christian Aid Week 10-16 May
"Love never fails. Coronavirus im-
pacts us all but love unites us all" In
the past, a number of us have sup-
ported Christian Aid with contribu-
tions in the red envelopes via the collection at Christ Church. This col-
lection has been recorded in the church accounts and then sent on to
Christian Aid. This year, we cannot do the usual collections because
of the Corvid19, but it is still not too late to contribute to Christian Aid
via Christ Church. Either cash or cheques can be delivered to John
Bickerstaffe our treasurer, 012775 855605.

Colin and Audrey Gibson in Lebanon
Our Mission Partner's link letter ar-
rived after Easter, after the last magazine
went to press. Their situation is very similar
to ours, everyone is required to stay at home
apart from essential work, trips for food
shopping, medical needs & the bank. Borders
are sealed and the airport is closed. There is a night-time curfew and
restrictions on travel. . Thankfully these restrictions seem to be work-
ing. (8th May Covid-19 update: 796 cases reported, 26 deaths)
Their concern is that Lebanon does not have resources to give much
help to people laid off work, adding to those already affected by the
near collapse of the economy. The effect on the poor who live in dense-
ly populated areas is a big worry.
Colin and Audrey work with the Lebanese Society for Educational and
Social Development (LSESD) who aim to strengthen the Church and
serve the community in Lebanon and the wider Arab world. Audrey
works with children with special educational needs and Colin liaises
with local and international partners to ensure that the various minis-
tries can be effective and adequately financed
In April, they were both working from home. Colin's routine hadn't
changed much, he was writing reports and fund raising. Audrey was
less busy, schools had closed. She was sending out online worksheets
for the children. She was also helping with the Parent 2 Parent support
Group which has grown during lockdown. Using WhatsApp there was a
daily sharing of ideas and recipes etc. as well as encouragement when
necessary
With all the churches and mosques closed Audrey and Colin are helping
to prepare services for their church, All Saints and Audrey has started
a Prayer Space for all church members to share prayer requests by
email.
Please continue to pray for the Lebanon, for wisdom for the LSESD
board facing financial difficulties and for Ella (name changed) with MS
and in mourning, that she finds Jesus amid her current difficulties.
Give thanks for the Parent 2 Parent group and for the more positive
aspects of lockdown, having more time to watch spring arrive and
cleaner air to breath!

Letter from the Right Reverend Ruth Worsley, Bishop of Taunton Recognise the one who stands beside you
‘Stay alert’ is the message as we ‘ease out of lockdown’. We know
that for some there is little ease as we begin to re-engage with a
world that is still fearful of Covid-19 and uncertain about its future.
The requirement to ‘stay alert’ is to encourage us to watch out for
signs of the virus and protect ourselves and others as necessary.
We’ve just celebrated Pentecost, often recognised as the birthday of
the Church. Jesus’ message to his followers as he left them to return
to his Father was that they were to ‘stay alert’, not to guard against
something fearful to come but rather to be watchful for the Spirit
that would free them from fear. It didn’t mean that there weren’t still
physical dangers to face but rather that their spiritual lives should
grow in boldness.
We have seen much courage exhibited throughout this crisis to date.
Key workers who have continued to serve us day by day even whilst
most of us have remained at home. The NHS has quite rightly been
applauded and appreciated at this time and there are so many more.
I’ve been especially impressed by our schools and their teams who
have largely been open throughout this period to be provide care for
key worker families and vulnerable children. Even at weekends and
during this past half term holiday they have been tirelessly support-
ing their local communities. Staying alert to the needs of our young,
they have shown their commitment and care. I want to express my
huge gratitude to them!
As we move into June we may be seeing more children returning to

Whether still at home and isolated or beginning a return to wider
community life, may you find yourself being alert for and recognising
the one who stands alongside you, the Spirit, who is friend, guardian
and comforter.

Don’t overdo the exercise
During this period of staying so much at home, how much exercise is
good?
According to immunologists, regular bouts of moderate-intensity exer-
cise can help build our resistance to infection. “Regular moderate exer-
cise ensures that our lymph, which is the circulatory system of our im-
mune cells, keeps flowing,” says Dr Jenna Macciochi, of the University
of Sussex.
Regular moderate exercise can also improve our sleep, help control
weight, and prevent muscle loss. Some experts suggest that mild to
moderate is for 20 – 45 minutes up to three times a week. However,
avoid exerting to exhaustion, which decreases your immunity.

CORONAVIRUS
The earth rose up to bite us
she took us by surprise
she sent us flooding waters
she sent us raging fires
She exploded and she shook us
she spewed out lava rains
She "tore the earth asunder"
and dried up prairie planes
Her wind blew fierce and wildly
to make foundations shudder -
and roof tops flew unfettered
and fell upon each other
Mighty trees uprooted
and birds blown off their course
and oceans bridging coastlines
create unnatural shores.
Above the flaming orange sun
sucks moisture from the land
and turns the forests lush and green
into desert sands
Amid disease and famine
comes a new tormenting curse
with tentacles indiscriminate
it spreads to do its worse.
But we will defeat this enemy
with defiance and good cheer
and rise above this inevitable
misery and fear.
For as we look around us
we see heroes everywhere
and neighbours support neighbours
and really show they care.
Walkers wave to walkers
at distances agreed
as they exercise with caution
as the government decrees.
While isolated families
call more often than before
for we're all in this together
and we need to hear them more.
Our strength is in resilience
and we shall persevere
so look outside your window
and what you see is dear
That nature is renewing
before your very eyes
as rivers flow free and clear
below unpolluted skies.
So when this virus disappears
and we emerge elated
We must all remember those
This virus has defeated
And we should all be proud to say
together we were strong
and nature will renew itself
And life will carry on.
Now in this time of isolation
we are given time to wonder If us
human beings are the cause of
this tragedy and plunder.
In the magic of this world we see
Such beauty and such joy
That now is time to give our thoughts

There are always toys and books in the children’s corner in Church for tod-
dlers and babies. First Sunday of each month is Children’s Church, for
young children and their families, in Church. All other Sundays, Faith for
Children (FFC) 3-11 years meet in the Vestry Hall during the service in
