A LIFE WORTH LIVING This is the title of a nine session course based on Paul’s

letter to the Philippians, which will start on Sunday,

September 30. We’ll begin with supper at 5:30, have a video presentation,

dessert and discussion, concluding by 8:00. This course has been prepared by

Nicky Gumbel, the author of Alpha, and will follow a similar format.

Each week we’ll talk about ways to live the Christian life positively,

practically and joyfully, taking our direction from things that St. Paul taught

the young congregation at Philippi, Greece about “new life in Christ.”

Registration will begin on Sunday, September 9 when we return to the

8:45/10:45 schedule. It is possible to participate even if you have to miss a

session. A small book can be purchased which covers the material in the

videos. We’ll also have a free-will offering with the supper as we did with

Alpha.

THANKS TO OUR WORSHIP LEADERS

This summer we have had several of our members take responsibility

for the leadership of worship while I’ve been on vacation.

Thank you to Cathy McWilliams, Judy Gauthier, Karl Von Seggern and

Janet O’Mara for their help with this important task.

Thank you as well to those who have been brightening our worship

with beautiful music, including Laura & Tom Primiano, Ken Hill, Judy

Gauthier, Laurice Maher, Ellen McManus, John Jansen, Andrew Sharrock and

Nikko Navarro.

THANKS FOR THE FELLOWSHIP

We’re grateful to Laurie and Chris Swaine for hosting the early sum-

mer fellowship in their backyard and for the collection of food for the pantry.

It was a wonderful Vacation Bible School activity day thanks to many

volunteers, generous donations of food and supplies and lots of enthusiastic

children. We thank coordinator Tom Primiano and a host of helpers.

SHOE DRIVE AT 4,800 PAIRS! LETS TURN OUR OLD SHOES INTO CLEAN WATER!

Bring your used and new shoes to Christ Lutheran Church, Islip Terrace. To partici-

pate, give your shoes the boot by donating your used and new shoes, which

must be tied or rubber-banded into pairs into our drop off bin at Christ

COUNCIL NOTES PASTOR’S REPORT - Along with the regular report about pastoral activities, it was noted that the

number of contributors using e-giving has increased by a couple to 15 families. There are another 15

who mail in envelopes on a weekly/monthly basis. All of this helps, especially during summer months.

Hopefully this will increase so that there won’t be problems not being able to catch-up with offerings

that were missed.

Our insurance company did a thorough inspection of our buildings and has sent us a list of

ways to improve the safety of the facilities. Property, education and youth committees will be address-

ing these.

We are hoping to plan a special seminar by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans for financial plan-

ning in the fall. Several of our members have attended the seminar previously and highly recommend

it.

The pictorial directory is being distributed initially to everyone who had a picture taken. We

expect to be able to provide copies to others who would like one after the initial distribution.

OUTREACH MINISTRY TEAM – The Fall Festival is being planned for Saturday, Sept. 29 (NEW

DATE). Thank you to everyone who helped with the funeral luncheon for Judy O’Neill’s family. They

were very grateful. Peanut Butter crews have continued over the summer. Thanks for heeding the call

for the peanut butter shortage. The shoe collection is up to 4,400 pairs.

WORSHIP – We’ve needed an organ repair for $700.

STEWARDSHIP TEAM – The congregational surveys filled out in the fall are almost tabulated. If

you didn’t fill one of these anonymous surveys out and would like to be included, please pick up a

blank copy from the narthex table or the office as soon as possible and return it to the collection box in

the narthex.

PROPERTY – The chimney was repaired and shortened to correct deteriorated masonry. We are grate-

ful to Karen and George Seitz who covered the cost of $3,600. for this important repair in memory of

Karen’s mother, Clare Kahrau. Work was also done to the cement block wall by the garden as part of

this repair.

Property is investigating the possibility of volunteers to replace shingles on part of the fellow-

ship hall roof. Speak to Chris Swaine or Jim Musa if you may be able to help.

EDUCATION – A special VBS activity day was held in mid August. A course entitled “A Life Worth

Living” will be run on Sundays from 5:30-8:00 starting September 30. This is a course from Alpha

about living the Christian lifestyle outlined in the New Testament book of Philippians. It will include

supper.

SR YOUTH – A canoe outing was held in July, with a pool party and a day at Splish Splash planed for

August.

SOCIAL MINISTRY – Generous efforts have helped the pantry keep up with demand, but there con-

tinues to be a need.

FELLOWSHIP- The picnic is planned for Saturday, August 25 at Brookwood Hall from 1-6PM. The

committee will provide hamburgers and hot dogs and juice. Please bring salads and desserts.

The Oktoberfest is planned for Friday, October 26.

DEACONʼS CORNER SEPTEMBER 2012

Here we are again, at the end of another summer! It always seems to go

by too quickly! Kevin and I did a lot of traveling over the summer, we

were away every weekend from mid-June into August. We had a great

time visiting family and relaxing on Marthaʼs Vineyard, but these

weekends away did mean that we didnʼt worship here at Christ

Lutheran. This makes me realize how important it is to have a place in

a community of faith, something that we take for granted.

Someone who doesnʼt take this for granted is our organist, Konstantza

Chernov. Konstantza grew up in a communist country where freedom of religion didnʼt exist. The churches were closed and people were forced to worship privately in their

own homes isolated from other believers. Konstantza knows all too well how important

it is to be a part of a faith community. I read somewhere that Christianity suffered a ma-

jor blow when Constantine the Great made Christianity the official Roman religion in

the fourth century. The authorʼs point was that it became too easy to be a Christian and

take for granted the faith that previous generations had to work so hard to defend.

It is a privilege to be part of a congregational family. However, just as with any family,

there are times when conflicts arise which strain the unity of the congregation. In

August, there were a few Sundays when the lesson was from St. Paulʼs letters to the

Ephesians. Paul had received word that there was a great deal of dissension within that

Christian community and was writing to remind them of the unity they share which

supersedes any diversity within the community. As Pastor said in his sermon, “Nothing

that the Church does should become more important than the sharing of the Good

News, and so in this fourth chapter of Ephesians St. Paul focuses on leading a lifestyle

that puts unity above the diversity, and the differences of opinion we may have with

other members of the Body.”

We may not be the most outwardly diverse congregation, but we are made up of

members with many diverse gifts and interests which can help the further the mission of

the congregation. If we all had the same gifts and interests, our mission would be very

limited! However, it is this diversity that can lead to misunderstandings and

divisiveness. It is up to each of us to remember to put unity above diversity “making

every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION NEWS Dear Fellow Church Members,

It is with great honor for me to accept my appointment as Education Committee Chairman. Though there

are significant challenges ahead for our Church, especially during a time when families' schedules are in-

creasingly filled with activity, I believe we can increase the quality of Christian education as well as attract

new members to Sunday School and our Church with dedicated efforts from all of us. We must do this!

Our children depend on it and deserve at least the same quality of a Christian upbringing that we were for-

tunate enough to have.

VBS was a terrific success this past week! With 28 children and numerous helpers in attendance, we were

able on short notice to do far more than a few helpers alone would have been able to accomplish; this suc-

cess proves that we can improve other areas of education with the cooperative efforts of many. With Rally

Day upon us on September 9th, I ask that you consider supporting our efforts by bring your children to

church to sign up for Sunday School and ask friends to come down as well. I know we can pull together to

improve possibly the most important element for the future of our Church, our children's Christian educa-

tion.

2012 HOLIDAY FAIR

2012 is the 50th Anniversary of our Annual Holiday Fair which will

be held on Friday, November 9th and Saturday, November 10th. Please

get involved, start planning on what you can do to help. Start working at

home now on handmade crafts, ornaments, decorations, jewelry, a theme

basket or a knitted item. Maybe you might want to pick up something for

the Children’s Table or clean out a closet or drawer and find something for

the White Elephant Room. Anything would be appreciated. Our next Fair

Meeting will be sometime in September, look for the date and please plan

on attending. Everyone is welcome.

The Golf Outing Committee is excited about this year’s 2nd Christ

Lutheran Annual Golf Outing to be held on Sept. 26 2012. If anyone is

HELP RESTOCK THE FOOD PANTRY

The summer season is quickly drawing to

a close and the food pantry has helped many

families. As the fall approaches and school

starts, the needs of the food pantry will be in-

creased.

Our food pantry receives help from L.I.

Cares continuously and it still takes all of our

congregation and neighborhood agencies to sup-

port us.

At the present time we have an increased

need for personal care items such as bathroom

tissue, soap, laundry products, baby care items.

We are also low on canned meats, pasta, macaro-

ni & cheese and cereals.

YOUTH MINISTRY AT CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH

JR. YOUTH To all Junior Youth Parents and Junior Youths,

It is that time of year for the Junior Youth to begin

meeting again. We will continue meeting on the 2nd

and 4th Sunday of each month. I have a great year

planned ahead for everyone. Please stop by the Junior

Youth Group table on Rally Day and pick up your

Schedule and Goody Bag. Also make sure to enter the

raffle for a surprise gift, in which the winner will be

announced at our first meeting on September 23rd. I

look forward to seeing you all on RALLY DAY!!!

Through money donated in Hilda Hill’s memory we have a new set of Bell Chimes! They are very similar to a bell choir but are easier for younger players to make a sound. Please join music teach-ers Audrey Drake & Laura Hill-Primiano on Thursdays, starting September 20th at 7:00 PM.
