The FRUIT BASKET MAY 20084

Commemorated on April 27Pascha (Easter)Enjoy ye all the feast of faith; receive ye all the riches of loving-kind-ness. (Sermon of St John Chrysostom, read at Paschal Matins)

The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is the center of theChristian faith. St Paul says that if Christ is not raised from the dead, then our preaching and faith are in vain (I Cor. 15:14). Indeed, withoutthe resurrection there would be no Christian preaching or faith. Thedisciples of Christ would have remained the broken and hopeless bandwhich the Gospel of John describes as being in hiding behind lockeddoors for fear of the Jews. They went nowhere and preached nothinguntil they met the risen Christ, the doors being shut (John 20: 19). Thenthey touched the wounds of the nails and the spear; they ate and drankwith Him. The resurrectionbecame the basis of everythingthey said and did (Acts 2-4): ".. . for a spirit has not flesh andbones as you see that I have"(Luke 24:39). The resurrec- tion revealsJesus of Nazareth as not only the expected Messiah of Israel, but as theKing and Lord of a new Jerusalem: a new heaven and a new earth. Then I asw a new heaven and a new earth. . . the holy city, newJerusalem. And I heard a great voice from the throne saying "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and theyshall be his people. . . He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, anddeath shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying norpain any more, for the former things have passed away (Rev. 21:1-4). In His death and resurrection, Christ defeats the last enemy, death, and thereby fulfills the mandate of His Father to subject all things underHis feet (I Cor. 15:24-26). Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth andwisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing (Rev. 5: 12)THE FEAST OF FEASTSThe Christian faith is celebrated in the liturgy of the Church. Truecelebration is always a living participation. It is not a mere attendance atservices. It is communion in the power of the event being celebrated. It

is God's free gift of joy given to spiritual men as a reward for their self-denial. It is the fulfillment of spiritual and physical effort and preparation. The resurrection of Christ, being the center of the Christian faith, is thebasis of the Church's liturgical life and the true model for all celebration. This is the chosen and holy day, first of sabbaths, king and lord of days, the feast of feasts, holy day of holy days. On this day we bless Christforevermore (Irmos 8, Paschal Canon).PREPARATION Twelve weeks of preparation precede the "feast of feasts." A longjourney which includes five prelenten Sundays, six weeks of Great Lentand finally Holy Week is made. The journey moves from the self-willedexile of the prodigal son to the grace-filled entrance into the newJerusalem, coming down as a bride beautifully adorned for her husband(Rev. 21:2) Repentance, forgiveness, reconciliation, prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and study are the means by which this long journey is made. Focusing on the veneration of the Cross at its midpoint, the lentenvoyage itself reveals that the joy of the resurrection is achieved onlythrough the Cross. "Through the cross joy has come into all the world,"we sing in one paschal hymn. And in the paschal troparion, we repeatagain and again that Christ has trampled down death - by death! St Paulwrites that the name of Jesus is exalted above every name because Hefirst emptied Himself, taking on the lowly form of a servant and beingobedient even to death on the Cross (Phil. 2:5-11). The road to thecelebration of the resurrection is the self-emptying crucifixion of Lent.Pascha is the passover from death to life. Yesterday I was buried with Thee, 0 Christ. Today I arise with Theein Thy resurrection. Yesterday I was crucified with Thee: Glorify mewith Thee, 0 Savior, in Thy kingdom (Ode 3, Paschal Canon).THE PROCESSION The divine services of the night of Pascha commence near midnight ofHoly Saturday. At the Ninth Ode of the Canon of Nocturn, the priest, already vested in his brightest robes, removes the Holy Shroud from thetomb and carries it to the altar table, where it remains until the leave-taking of Pascha. The faithful stand in darkness. Then, one by one, theylight their candles from the candle held by the priest and form a greatprocession out of the church. Choir, servers, priest and people, led bythe bearers of the cross, banners, icons and Gospel book, circle thechurch. The bells are rung incessantly and the angelic hymn of the

resurrection is chanted. The procession comes to a stop before the principal doors of thechurch. Before the closed doors the priest and the people sing thetroparion of Pascha, "Christ is risen from the dead. . .", many times.Even before entering the church the priest and people exchange thepaschal greeting: "Christ is risen! Indeed He is risen!" This segmentof the paschal services is extremely important. It preserves in theexperience of the Church the primitive accounts of the resurrection ofChrist as recorded in the Gospels. The angel rolled away the stonefrom the tomb not to let a biologically revived but physically entrappedChrist walk out, but to reveal that "He is not here; for He has risen, asHe said" (Matt. 28:6).In the paschal canon we sing: Thou didst arise, O Christ, and yet the tomb remained sealed, asat Thy birth the Virgin's womb remained unharmed; and Thou hasopened for us the gates of paradise (Ode 6). Finally, the procession of light and song in the darkness of night, andthe thunderous proclamation that, indeed, Christ is risen, fulfill thewords of the Evangelist John: "The light shines in darkness, and thedarkness has not overcome it" (John 1:5). The doors are opened and the faithful re-enter. The church is bathedin light and adorned with flowers. It is the heavenly bride and thesymbol of the empty tomb:Bearing life and more fruitful than paradise Brighter than anyroyal chamber, Thy tomb, O Christ, is the fountain of our resur-rection (Paschal Hours).MATINS Matins commences immediately. The risen Christ is glorified in thesinging of the beautiful canon of St John of Damascus. The paschalgreeting is repeatedly exchanged. Near the end of Matins the paschalverses are sung. They relate the entire narrative of the Lord's resurrec-tion. They conclude with the words calling us to actualize among eachother the forgiveness freely given to all by God: This is the day of resurrection. Let us be illumined by the feast.Let us embrace each other. Let us call "brothers" even those whohate us, And forgive all by the resurrection. . . The sermon of St John Chrysostom is then read by the celebrant. The sermon was originally composed as a baptismal instruction. It is

Page 7: Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! Christos Voskrese ... · Christos Voskrese! Voistinu Voskrese! Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death and upon those in

retained by the Church in the paschal services because everything aboutthe night of Pascha recalls the Sacrament of Baptism: the language andgeneral terminology of the liturgical texts, the specific hymns, the vest-ment color, the use of candles and the great procession itself. Now thesermon invites us to a great reaffirmation of our baptism: to union withChrist in the receiving of Holy Communion. If any man is devout and loves God, let him enjoy this fair and radianttriumphal feast. . . the table is fully laden; feast you all sumptuously. . .the calf is fatted, let no one go hungry away. . .

THE DIVINE LITURGY The sermon announces the imminent beginning of the Divine Liturgy. The altar table is fully laden with the divine food: the Body and Blood ofthe risen and glorified Christ. No one is to go away hungry. The servicebooks are very specific in saying that only he who partakes of the Bodyand Blood of Christ eats the true Pascha. The Divine Liturgy, therefore, normally follows immediately after paschal Matins. Foods from whichthe faithful have been asked to abstain during the lenten journey areblessed and eaten only after the Divine Liturgy.

THE DAY WITHOUT EVENING Pascha is the inauguration of a new age. It reveals the mystery of theeighth day. It is our taste, in this age, of the new and unending day of theKingdom of God. Something of this new and unending day is conveyedto us in the length of the paschal services, in the repetition of the paschalorder for all the services of Bright Week, and in the special paschalfeatures retained in the services for the forty days until Ascension. Fortydays are, as it were, treated as one day. Together they comprise thesymbol of the new time in which the Church lives and toward which sheever draws the faithful, from one degree of glory to another. O Christ, great and most holy Pascha. O Wisdom, Word andPower of God, grant that we may more perfectly partake of Theein the never-ending day of Thy kingdom (Ninth Ode, Paschal

AFRAID OF THE DARKA little boy was afraid of the dark. One night his mother told him to goout to the back porch and bring her the broom. The little boy turned to his mother and said, "Mama, I don't want to goout there. It's dark."The mother smiled reassuringly at her son. "You don't have to be afraidof the dark," she explained. "Jesus is out there. He'll look after you andprotect you."The little boy looked at his mother real hard and asked, "Are you surehe's out there?""Yes, I'm sure. He is everywhere, and he is always ready to help youwhen you need him," she said. The little boy thought about that for a minute and then went to the backdoor and cracked it a little. Peering out into the darkness, he called,"Jesus? If you're out there, would you please hand me the broom?"Used by permission. Thanks to Squeaky at www.cleanjoke.com

Have you ever experienced searching yourmind to see if it might apply to you, whilehearing somebody else being lectured? As Iread that warning to Moses I got that feeling—could that apply to me, too? But where wouldI encounter Holy Ground? What could thesandals mean to me? Following are some of myreflections. Where would Holy Ground beencountered? During worship at church oreven when we approach the throne of grace inprivate prayer. Surely it would apply when weapproach the Chalice or other sacraments. I’m

sure there are other times, also. What could Sandals refer to today? My first thought was that sandalscreated a barrier between Moses’ body and the Holy Ground. Nothingcreated by man should be allowed to come between God and man.According to Jewish law even stones used to build an altar for sacrificeswere to be undressed since using a tool would defile it. Exodus 20:25 So perhaps the sandals that are to be taken off could refer to anythingthat separates us from God, that distracts the mind from focusing on Godwhen on Holy Ground. Some of those sandals could be the earthly caresthat the Cherubic Hymn bids us to lay aside—unresolved disagreements orresentments, anxieties about health, finances, or other daily concerns. Another could be heedlessly trampling on Holy Ground, perhaps just goingthrough the motions and doing things mechanically, with littleconsciousness of holiness—”familiarity breeds contempt”sort of thing.

A LAYPERSON’S VIEW TAKE OFF YOUR SANDALS: A MEDITATION by M.R

“So he saw the bush burning with fire, but the bush was notconsumed. So Moses said, ‘I will now turn aside and see thisgreat sight—why the bush is not consumed.’ When thereforethe Lord saw him turn aside to look, God called to him fromthe midst of the bush and said, ‘Moses! Moses!’ Then hesaid, ‘Here I am.’ So God said, ‘Do not come any closer.Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you standis holy ground.’” Ex. 3:2-5 NKJV

Still another might be unconfessed sin with its undercurrent of guilt, whichcreates a barrier to fellowship and communion with God. (Adam and Evetried to hide behind “clothing” of leaves.) In conclusion, the following summarizes the main points of my reflectionto make it easier for me to remember to take off any perceived “sandals”when approaching or standing on Holy Ground... ♦ Strip off earthly cares and anxieties. ♦ Focus on the activity consciously (as with tunnel vision) as though doing it for the first time. ♦ Shed the sin and guilt that isolates us from communion with God. (by confession and asking forgiveness, I John 1:9) Yes, I know we are his children and God is a kind, compassionate andloving father, but He is also the great and awesome God—a consumingfire—who expects our best. My hope is that God will grant me the graceto grow in the ability to always approach His Holy Ground with properawe and reverence and unencumbered with “sandals”.

You have always been where we return,The home that is our harbor from the sea,The place where what we are can easy be,With nothing we need alter or unlearn.

That you would give has always been a given.Your love for us is something simply there,As plain and necessary as the air,And just as unpretentious and unbidden.

And though I cannot give you now your due,Which is beyond what these poor words can say,I give you all I can this special day,Which is the treasure of my love for you.

GOD CREATED MANGod created the dog and said:'”Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comesin or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.”The dog said: 'That's a long time to be barking. How about onlyten years and I'll give you back the other ten?'So God agreed.

God created the monkey and said: “Entertain people, do tricks, andmake them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span.”The monkey said: 'Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a prettylong time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the Dogdid?' And God agreed.

God created the cow and said: “You must go into the field with thefarmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milkto support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixtyyears.'The cow said: 'That's kind of a tough life you want me to livefor sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the otherforty?' And God agreed again.

God created man and said: “Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years.” But man said: 'Only twentyyears? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cowgave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the doggave back; that makes eighty, okay?' 'Okay,' said God, 'You askedfor it.'So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoyourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support ourfamily. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain thegrandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch andbark at everyone.
