From the Desk of Father Gargotta
On this second Sunday of Lent, we hear the story of the
Transfiguration of Jesus. This is one of the most revealing
incidents that teaches us to pray and how prayer connects
us with the Communion of Saints. The Gospel says that
Jesus goes up the mountain to get away from the busy-
ness and crowds to pray. He brings Peter, James, and
John with Him. While Jesus is in prayer with the Father,
Moses and Elijah appear and converse with Him. Jesus’
face becomes bright and shone with Light. This is the
Light of Divinity, the Glory of Heaven shining through
Him. Putting this all together, what do we conclude?
First, we see that prayer, and time set aside to pray, unites
us to God and His pure Light of Divinity. The Light was
also shining through Moses and Elijah. They were faithful
in their lifetime and now alive in the Divinity of God and
the Glory of Heaven. Second, we see that the Communion
of Saints is real and that saints can intercede for us.
Moses and Elijah are conversing with Jesus, and by the
hints of the story, they were talking to Jesus about his
near future passion and death. Jesus does not necessarily
need them to do this. Jesus was Divine, but he lived on
earth as 100% human. This shows us that we can con-
verse (pray) with the Saints. We are in communion with
them and when we converse with them, they converse in
a unique way with God, and then can return those conver-
sations, and the graces that flow from the conversation, to
us. Prayer unites us with God and with the Communion of
Saints. Prayer assists us on our journey to Heaven and our
responsibilities in this life. Lent is a great time for us to
enter more deeply into daily prayer, and to help this
become a regular routine after Lent. Prayer will also
transfigure us and assist us, all the more, to be part of the
Communion of Saints.
The Gospel for the Second Sunday of Lent is the Transfigura-
tion of Jesus. In this story Jesus reveals his true divine nature
as Son of the Father to his disciples. Let us pray that Jesus will
continue to reveal himself to us throughout this Lenten season
and show us His will for the future of our parish.
Our Resource Task Force to study, evaluate and make recom-
mendations on the future use of our buildings concluded its
tour of the buildings. Regarding St. Ambrose and Our Lady
Queen of Peace, the situation is fairly straightforward. In cal-
endar year 2019, $82,777 was spent on St. Ambrose for
necessities like electricity, gas, water, sewage, insurance, and
maintenance staff. During the same year, the expenses for Our
Lady Queen of Peace was $79,499. Those expenses continue
into this year.
Please watch the bulletin for the announcement of a parish-
wide assembly to discuss the future of all of our church
properties.
Task Force Notes
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT—PLEASE READ Bishop Zubik has temporarily suspended the reception of the Precious Blood at Communion and also the shaking of hands at the Sign of Peace. Only the Body of Christ will be offered at Communion until further notice.
When we hear someone say, “Lent is coming”, we immediately start to think, “What am I going to give up?”. This is
how we learned as children to think about the sacrifices that Jesus made for us. However, this is the faith perspective of
a child rather than an adult.
What if Lent wasn’t a time to give up something, but a time to become something? What if we thought about ways to
become more Christ-like? Let us look at how we can develop virtue and build on our gifts of character that will not
only better ourselves, but more importantly, build on our relationship with others and with God.
Some examples might be: If I am abrupt and impatient, then I need to work on being gentle and tolerant. If I am proud
and critical, then I need to be humble and accepting. If I hold onto grudges, then I need to be forgiving. As we work
through our negativity, we will come to the realization of why we act the way that we do, which will then build on our
positive traits.
Let’s search our hearts and see where we can each build on and improve our gifts of character. Beginning on Ash
Wednesday, there will be a basket at the foot of a Lenten cross. Let’s discern the characteristics in our lives that we
want to improve during Lent and place them in the basket. These will be used for the Easter Blessing Fire at the Easter
Vigil. This will strengthen us to be more in union with Christ and to be His image in the world.

Seven Church Visitation On Holy Thursday The Seven Church Visitation or “Church Walk” as it is commonly known was begun by Saint Philip Neri in 1553. The Seven Church Visitation is a pious Lenten tradition on the evening of Holy Thursday. Following the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the Blessed Sacrament is reserved on the Altar of Repose in the church for Adoration. We
remember the Agony of the Garden and the events that are to take place on Good Friday. The visitation to seven churches replicates the visiting of the seven major churches in Rome: Saint Mary Major, Saint Lawrence, Holy Cross, Saint John Lateran, Saint Sebastian, Saint Paul Outside the Wall and Saint Peter Basilica. Christ Our Savior Parish will continue the tradition of visiting seven churches following the Mass on Holy Thursday. The “Church Walk” will begin at 8:45 p.m. from the rear parking lot of Saint Boniface Church. The pilgr ims will visit seven churches to pray before the Blessed Sacrament. To reserve a seat on the bus (limited to 25) call the parish office at: 412-761-1552.
Lenten Sunday Scripture Class (March 1 to March 29)
Father DiNardo will conduct his traditional Lenten Scripture Study Class after the 9:00 a.m. Mass at
Saint Boniface Church in the Archives Room (basement of the church) each Sunday of Lent beginning
March 1. The class will explore the Letter of Saint Paul with particular emphasis on Paul’s Letter to the
Romans and to the Thessalonians. The study of scripture is one way to make the Lenten season a time of
prayer and reflection in preparation for Easter. All are welcome to attend.

Christ Our Savior Parish Mission—March 9 & 10 “To Whom Shall We Go?” Prayer In the Busyness of Life
In the first talk we will explore what mental prayer is and some of
the obstacles that we encounter when we try to pray. The basis of
our reflections will be the Wisdom of Solomon. In the second talk
we will explore the prayer of Jesus to the Father and our entering
into that dialogue. We will look at some examples of the prayer of
the Saints as well.

Mardis Gras, which is French for "Fat Tuesday” is the holiday before Ash Wednesday, and it begins a season of fasting called Lent, leading up to Easter Sunday. It is called Fat Tuesday because it is the last day that many people eat meat and fatty foods before Lent begins. Our 8th grade students in their Religion and Art classes at Northside Catholic Assumption Academy prepared their Mardi Gras masks and then shared them, along with the history of this celebration, with the younger students. The season of Lent
also gives the students in Grades K-8, the opportunity to focus on Religious Art, such as using oil pastels and watercolors to depict the stories of Jesus’ suffering and Resurrection. These art works will be on display in school throughout Lent and Easter Season. For more information on our 3 year old preschool through 8th grade school, give us a call at
