Happy New Year! Today, we celebrate the First Sunday of Advent, and we begin a new liturgical year. Our lives in the world continue to January 1st as we close the books and make our end of the year contributions, but our Christmas Season is not an end. It is a beginning. We look forward to a morning of the Nativity, the birth of

Our Lord, and a morning of presents, blessings, and family. We prepare properly in the Advent Season, a joyful time of expectation of the coming of Christ and the invitation to enter more deeply into the mysteries of our faith in the coming year. Our readings this Sunday invite us to prepare.

The Responsorial Psalm from Chapter 80 is, “Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.” The prayer of the Psalmist is a petition and a reminder for himself. His prayer must also be our prayer. We are citizens of the Kingdom of God, and our joyful expectation of Christ awaits His entry into the world to save us from our sin. The Psalmist realizes he has turned from God and must repent. Our preparation begins with an examination of our lives for our own confession to receive absolution and the grace of God.

This time of preparation and expectation should also continue through the year. We hear the words of Jesus in the thirteenth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, “Watch, therefore; you do not know when the Lord of the house is coming.” Thankfully, we know that Our Savior is born on Christmas, but our joyful expectation continues throughout the year as we remain ready and waiting for Jesus to come again. May we make our house, our lives, ready for our Lord.

From our Parroquial Vicar...

Thank you to the Christ the King Community for your support of the Five Year St. Peregrine Cancer Shrine Anniversary Celebration on Friday, November 14. What a beautiful, holy evening! Over 200 people were witness to the power of prayer and the gift of the St. Peregrine Cancer Shrine to our community and beyond. Everyone came together in service guided by our Christ the King Student Ambassadors, the Adorers, our musicians, the Shrine Steering Committee, the Spanish Prayer Group, the Knights

of Columbus, Christ the King Staff, and Cyndi Luke who ensured the food and refreshment was superb! A special thanks to the many others that said “yes” to be present, to offer their special intentions, and to pray for those struggling with cancer that need strength for the journey. Our celebration was truly one that offered “a sanctuary for spiritual healing and emotional peace.”

Our thank you extends beyond the evening of November 14 as this celebratory event kicks off our year end focus of continuing to build the St. Peregrine Cancer Shrine Endowment Fund. We thank you for the collection of $12,900 on Friday evening and ask, “Have you prayerfully considered making a gift to the St. Peregrine Cancer Shrine Endowment Fund?” Your gift will help to create a permanent source of income that will ensure the continuation of the ministry far into the future. You create a lasting legacy when you make an endowment gift in your honor or in memory of another person.

From now until the end of the year, every $100 donation to the St. Peregrine Cancer Shrine Endowment Fund generates a raffle ticket for a $2,000 US Airways Travel Gift Card! The drawing for the Gift Card will be held in January 2015.

The Kiosk, which accepts credit cards and is located in the back of the Church is a convenient way for you to make your gift. Your gift may also be made by check payable to the St. Peregrine Endowment Fund. Checks may be dropped off in the Christ the King Parish Office and Welcome Center or mailed to the Catholic Community Foundation at 400 E. Monroe Street, Phoenix 85004. Donations via credit card may be made through the Catholic Community Foundation at www.ccfphx.org/index.php/. Please contact Andy Romley at (480) 844-4462 or [email protected] if you have questions and /or wish personal assistance in making your endowment gift.

We thank God for every person’s gift as it can and does make a difference in building the St. Peregrine Cancer Shrine Endowment Fund. Thank you for making a gift that transforms your support of our work into a lasting legacy.

HAND CARVED in BETHLEHEM

PLEASE STOP BY THE TABLES OF RELIGIOUS WARES (Nativity set, rosaries, statues, crucifixes, charms, etc.)

AFTER ALL THE MASSES THE WEEK END OF December 20 & 21.

Ayman Khair representing about 140 Christian families from Bethlehem. These families have been dependent upon sales of their hand carved religious articles to tourists of the Holy Land. Due to the conflict in the Middle East, the tourism has been cut off. In order to survive, they have turned to Christian communities in the United States to purchase their articles.

These hand carved religious articles are beyond description. Carved from wood of the sacred Olive tree, this workmanship has been traditional for these families for hundreds of years. It is hoped that through the efforts of Mr. Khair that these families have a little income and are able to stay living in the Holy Land. Amazingly enough, The Christians population dropped from 22 % to less than 2% in the last 30 years. Thank you in advance for your support.

Note : These Religious Article make great Christmas Gift!

Communion to the Sick

Thank you to all who take communion to the sick and homebound of Christ the King. Our Lord invites us to participate in His mission of love and to reach out in His love to our brothers and sisters who are suffering. We bring them to the prayers of the Mass and the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. As we go forward building this ministry we will look at the Diocesan Policy and Guidelines for Volunteers in the Pastoral and Eucharistic Care of the Sick and Dying. It is from this document that we take on our new name, Pastoral Care Volunteers who are trained as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. We recently had a day of Reflection and Training, in this time we went over some of the changes that will be taking place. These changes will be implemented the weekend of December 6th and 7th. This is the procedure for taking the Eucharist to the sick in all Masses. (Daily Mass included) Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the beginning of Mass. Go to the back sacristy and on the counter you will find a container of hosts and a tray. You can place the

amount of hosts that are needed into your pyx and place your pyx onto the tray that will be taken up to the altar by the Sacristan. If your pyx is similar to others, please mark with a round dot on the bottom with your initial to help you to identify it. (these will be available in the sacristy).

Please note your name and the amount of hosts to be taken on the clipboard adjacent to the tray. You must have a burse that is to be worn around the neck, in order to carry the pyx that will contain the

Eucharist. We should never put the pyx with Our Lord in a purse or in our pockets. After communion Father or Deacon will call the Pastoral Care Volunteers forward to receive the pyx with the

consecrated host, they will share a blessing and commission us to go on behalf of the community of Christ the King, taking the Eucharist to the sick from the Mass.

Please go directly to your visit from the Mass. We are using the blue book of prayers for the Communion of the sick. If you do not have a burse or the book “Communion of the Sick”, please locate the Sacristan and they can get either for you.

Please note: If you are taking communion to the sick on behalf of Christ the King and you have not identified yourself with the Pastoral Office, please do so as soon as possible by contacting Anthanette Donaldson @ (480) 844-4478 or email to [email protected].

Prayer Chain Ministry

Please note we must be contacted by the individual or a family member to add names to our prayer list. Unless we are otherwise notified, all names on the prayer list will be published for one month. St. Peregrine Shrine Perpetual Adoration It was almost five years ago, Nov 22, 2009, on the Solemnity of Christ the King that our Perpetual Adoration Chapel was dedicated by Bishop Olmstead. The church was filled with

standing room only of the faithful as we watched on the projection screens the Bishop consecrate the altar and Chapel. Following the mass after exposing and blessing us with the precious body and blood of our Lord he then processed the monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament to the chapel and placed it on the altar. Over 500 dedicated Perpetual Adorers have remained on vigil with the Lord exposed in the Holy Eucharist. Vary rarely has He been unattended while exposed there on the Altar.

We still are asking for worshipers to become perpetual adorers so that we may remain a Perpetual Adoration parish. Please contact Dick Jacobson at [email protected] for more information.
