    HOSPITAL VISITS !!

Msgr. Sullivan is honored to support you and your family during times of illness by visiting the hospitals. NEITHER UMASS(LAKE) HOSPITAL NOR MEMORIAL HOSPITAL PRO-VIDE ANY INFORMATION ABOUT PATIENTS’ RELI-GIOUS AFFILIATION. So, we are entirely dependent on infor-mation we receive from family or friends. St. Vincent’s Hospi-tal’s records are excellent, and “St. V’s” provides current information in a timely way. Please call the rectory to advise us that someone is in the hospital so that Msgr. Sullivan can visit that person. !

From the Desk of Monsignor Tom!!!

    My dear fellow parishioners,!!

My entire time in high school, college and for 3 years beyond college fell during the Vietnam war. And, there’s a news story from Vietnam that I’ll never forget.!!

In 1968, an American soldier, Sergeant Anund C. Roark, was leading his platoon under intense enemy fire. The American forces were trying to take out some machine gun bunkers up hill. A hand grenade was thrown into the middle of Roark’s soldiers. In a split second, Sgt. Roark threw his body on the grenade and absorbed the entire blast. Killed immediately, eve-ry one of his comrades were saved.!!

In my mind’s eye, I revisited that scene over and over again. I couldn’t get it out of my head I was so filled with admiration. Part of what I wondered, of course, was: “Would I have the courage to do that?” I think of it on this Good Shepherd Sun-day. Stories of selfless people happen every year. We find them memorable. On Good Shepherd Sunday we focus on Jesus who lays down his life for the sheep.!!

In the Gospel Jesus begins by saying the “hired man” runs away. He’s simply working for money. When danger comes, he runs away. But the good shepherd surrenders his life for the sheep. At first blush, that sounds very pious. You might expect the shepherd to do all that he can for the sheep but then ulti-mately run to protect his own life. After all, we’re talking about sheep here. But there are shepherds like this. They save sheep.!!

But the teaching really underscores that God is willing to die to save us. And that has to take our breath away. That God loves us we believe. But that God would actually die? For us? All the wonderful distinctiveness of Christianity is found in that claim.!!

Jesus taught us that to love is to fully will the good of another. But he goes much further. God’s Son would actually die that we might live. There’s no greater love than this. This is who the Good Shepherd is.!!

We sometimes have a view of God as distant. He may know us indirectly. Of course, He’s concerned with the human race in a general way. But this Good Shepherd knows my voice and your voice. He hears us when we pray. He singles us out.!!

Today, who is called to be a good shepherd? Certainly, every leader of the Church. But not just them. Every disciple who has been entrusted with the gift of faith is called to be a good shep-herd. We, too, are charged to use our freedom to make choices that give life to others and that help the faith of others to grow. And Jesus gives us the power to share in the very knowledge that he enjoys with the Father.!!

    Monsignor Tom Sullivan!

Monsignor Sullivan is a Notary Public!!
