Scam Alert Churches and Pastors all across the nation are experiencing scammers trying to get money or gift cards from well meaning parishioners. The priests at Christ the Redeemer will not text or email you asking you for phone cards, iTunes cards or any other gift cards. This is a scam. Please do not respond to these requests! Make sure to check the email address and the phone number of the sender. If the email address does not match perfectly those of the priests, then it is not from our priests and you should ignore the request and report it as spam. The same is true with text messages. If you have a question about this or would like to help the parish, please always do so by contacting the parish office directly.

“He said to them, ‘The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few…’” LUKE 10:2 As Catholics we are all called to serve. However, many of us are unsure of what our charisms or gifts from the Holy Spirit are to help build God’s Church. Through prayer we are able to discern how God is calling us. The next time your pastor or fellow parishioner asks you to join a committee, ask God first, if that is what He wants you to do with your gifts.

Diocesan Resource Page on Issues Affecting the Catholic Church

The Catholic Diocese of Arlington website includes a resource page where parishioners can access information regarding the recent events affecting the Church. Read the policies on child protection and responses to the crisis from Bishop Burbidge and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops at www.arlingtondiocese.org/childprotection.

How Can You Give Christ’s Love to Others?

Catholic Social justice activist Dorothy Day said, “If we love enough, we are going to light that fire in the hearts of others.” She understood what Christ gave us on the Sermon of the Mount. Jesus asks us to live not for ourselves but for others. How can we do this? Only through following Jesus and his teachings of humility, kindness, and charity. To be a follower of Jesus means to bring Christ into the world by living your faith and loving for him. How can we do that? One way is to give yourself to the children who are coming to our Religious Education classes this year! Be a Catechist, a Co-Catechist, Class Aide, or Hall Monitor! All are needed, but especially teachers of the faith! We will help support and teach you! You will meet and make wonderful friends! We have some of the most caring and loving people teaching! Please come and be one of them! Christ is calling you to respond to his love and wait-ing for you to give it away to others just like Christ gave his love for us! Come join us! [email protected] or 703-430-0811 ext 117.

A word from the Pastor… (Summer Seminarian Edition) by Daniel Reuwer

My main task at Workcamp was driving and visiting each of the teens from Christ the Redeemer parish who had volunteered a week of their summer at the camp in service of others. Each time I got to one of these remote houses that the teens were working I would have a similar experience. I would park and walk around to the back of the house where there would be a group of kids wearing gloves, safety glasses, and work boots. They were sitting down to a quick peanut-butter and jelly sandwich for lunch… the same lunch as yesterday. They looked exhausted and were covered with sweat and grime. Yet as we turned the corner, we were greeted with nothing but huge smiles and enthusiastic greetings. This has been my experience of my first WorkCamp. While there were variations in each of the visits, so many followed the description above. At each site we visited we were greeted by joyful enthusiasm from the kids, contractors, and chaperones alike. This joy was made all the better by the fact that it was so incredibly Christ-fueled and genuine.

This is the beauty of WorkCamp. Yes, it’s a great opportunity for the students to participate in something bigger than themselves, helping those in the community who are in great need of support. WorkCamp also benefits the teens by connecting them with other teens from all around Northern Virginia. But the most beautiful part of WorkCamp is that it introduces the teens to the person of Jesus Christ.

Every morning begins with Mass. What a powerful statement to send – we can only truly serve others once we first have been fed at the Table of Our Lord. Then, and only then, the campers are sent out on mission within the community. Even going out to the worksite is not disconnected from the bigger mission of growing in our relationship with Jesus Christ. To this end, the trips to and from the site are marked by a discussion within the cars about the faith and the way in which the faith affects and is lived out by each of the teens, and what makes this even better is the fact that this discussion is led by the teens themselves.

The motto of the Benedictines really captures the spirit of WorkCamp – Ora et Labora. Translated “prayer and work”, the campers time at each of the worksites follows this pattern. The campers are taught how to offer their service to others as a prayer to God. When there are breaks, discussions regarding the faith often break out. Lunch is marked by a great reflection read by one of the campers and followed up with reflection questions. While work and manual labor is always taking place, the faith is never set aside. Rather, all moments are opportunities for an Encounter with the Lord.

The reason that I am writing to you all about WorkCamp is simple: to thank you for your support for the teens who attended. This weeklong service opportunity was transformative for them, and all my conversations with each of them really made the transformation apparent for me. Additionally, the service done for those in need made such an impact on the lives of so many different homeowners. These homeowners were able to see the face of Jesus Christ in each teen working at their sites. Finally, WorkCamp was transformational for me. As I sat in the Program Room Tuesday night, I saw the line of youth waiting to go to Confession to receive God’s love and mercy. Watching them wait for hours in line to receive this sacramental forgiveness was so powerful for my own vocation. Being here has renewed my desire to work tirelessly to become a holy priest of Jesus Christ who can one day return to the Diocese to bring Jesus’ grace and healing. Thank you so much for your generous support for WorkCamp, and please continue to support our youth as they journey to discover and become the people who God is calling them to be.
