School success is not simply defined as good grades and achievement test scores but, more importantly, as helping students to gain the self-confidence and skills needed to realize their own self-worth and potential. Dixon has become a Leader in Me school and continues its transformation as students learn and practice habits exemplified by happy, successful children—the habits that lead to becoming successful and happy adults.

The Leader in Me is based on Steven Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and it is amazing to see these young children at work. They are learning to be proactive by taking responsibility for their own behavior and by choosing to do the right thing. They plan and set goals, beginning with the end in mind. I’M EXCITED! ASK ME WHY.BY RALPH GUDEMAN, WORSHIP ARTS MINISTEROne of my favorite phrases is “Change is good–You go first.” We are about to undergo a change and we have a choice to make. Will we be anxious or excited?

I’m excited! Here’s why:n Our founding pastor of 37 years, Jeff Spiller, is retiring, however, we are excited for him becasue he will still be in part-time ministry with us!

n Our new pastor, Dr. Rob Couch, is a man many of us prayed for and received!

n He was an associate pastor at Christ UMC several years ago and was the founder of our NewSong service. As Senior Pastor, he will succeed Jeff in leading our traditional services on Sundays. In fact, he has already planned his first set of messages called Red Letter Mission based on the actual words of Jesus (usually appearing in red in the Bible.) Red Letter Mission sermons will highlight the things Christ calls us to do as His church.

n During this transition, we are still:

v Worshipping and receiving new members in six worship services weekly

v Feeding and assisting the needy daily

v Supplying a vehicle for missionaries

v Supporting missions locally and globally

v Assisting as the Holy Spirit changes lives in Celebrate Recovery, Lifegate, CSports, and other ministries

v Sending youth and adults on mission trips around the nation and world

SUNDAY MORNING STUDIES FOR ADULTSn 8:00 A.M. | PAUSE, BECAUSE EVERYBODY IS TEMPTED BY ANDY STANLEY | Rm A-207 Temptation isn’t new, it started in the Garden of Eden. Everyone struggles with it at times. In this four-part study Stanley takes a closer look at the temptations Jesus faced in the desert. Once we realize what is behind temptation and what is at stake, we can find the confidence to respond as Jesus did. A class for couples with children of all ages.

n 9:15 A.M. | TOWARD A CREATION | Rm A-209 | Our identity as Christians often clashes with the world around us, a world that largely chooses to ignore God. Even though things are far from the way God desires, He isn’t finished with us yet. A class for 50+ adults.

n 10:40 A.M. | ISRAEL’S MISSION BY RAY VANDER LANN | Rm A-204 | God gave the assignment to His people thousands of years ago to bring “lost sheep” back into the love and safety of His kingdom. He said to become a “Kingdom of Priests” and show the world what Christ is like. It’s still our task today. In this series, you’ll get a glimpse at the urgency and rewards of welcoming the strangers and prodigals the Lord longs to embrace. Discover the mission that can give your life greater meaning than you ever imagined.

Safe Haven is the focus of Christ United Methodist Women on SATURDAY, JUNE 11, as we invite 35 McKemie Place clients onto our campus. Christ UMC provides a safe environment one Saturday each quarter to women who would otherwise be on the street with no place to go.

The United Methodist Women provide activities, games, reading materials, spiritual and physical nurturing as well as a healthy lunch. The ladies of McKemie Place are very appreciative of all that is offered to them, but the “givers” often receive even more. Volunteers are needed to assist on Saturday, June 11, as we welcome these ladies on to campus!

For more information and ways that you can help, please contact Joyce Genz, 251.259.1675 or [email protected].

By Mike Rollins, Director of Youth MinistrySummer time is the time to harvest my favorite fruit, blueberries. I love blueberries! I even have a nickname for them—blue blubs. Blueberries are full of nutrients that are really good for you plus they are used to make yummy muffins and cobbler. They are extremely good straight off the bush, as well. But, we can also learn a lot about how God has called us to live from blueberries. Blueberries can bear some fruit if planted alone, but when two or more blueberry bushes grow near each other, they produce more fruit and that fruit is larger in size. Just like the blueberries, it isn’t good for humans to be alone, which is mentioned in the book of Genesis. I believe that this means that we need to have a group of people to help nurture and help us grow in our faith. When we have people in our lives who help us grow in our faith, just like the blueberry bush, we grow better than when we are alone.

This has always been extremely hard for me to remember during the busyness of summer. The family vacations, trips with church, band camps and football practices take up all of our time during the summer, but, I want to challenge you to find a group of people that you can meet with during all the busyness to help you grow in your personal faith. Because just like the blueberry bush, we weren’t made to be alone.

WEEKLY SUMMER PROGRAM|christumcchildren.com n SUNDAY MORNINGS All Sunday School classes are located in Building E.

By Sam Taylor Gochey, Associate Children’s MinisterSchool is out! For most people, that means more free time and more opportunities for rest. Rest is so important, not only for our growth physically, but also spiritually. With all the free time we have during the summer, it is important that we set aside time to spend together, relaxing and enjoying a break from our labor. Often times we can lose sight of the importance of rest with how busy we become during the school year.

The Bible talks about the importance of Sabbath. In the book of Exodus it is made clear that after we work hard and work well we are to take time off to rest. Exodus 20:8-10 says, “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.” Often we are so busy we miss the importance of taking Sabbath, of resting and enjoying time off from our hard work. Separating the ideas of laziness and Sabbath is key to understanding and enjoying rest. As the summer begins, be sure to take time for rest. Be sure to enjoy time with one another and know that restful days are needed and so very important to our spiritual and physical health.

BY RICK WARREN - For more information, visit danielplan.com As you start to eat real food, your cravings and addictions will be replaced by deep pleasure and satisfaction from naturally sweet things, such as a variety of delicious fruits, as well as vegetables like red bell peppers. Dr. Mark Hyman says, “The power of real food creates an abundant, healthy life. You can get the most powerful life-giving energy from your food.” I have given you the seed-bearing plants throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. Genesis 1:29 (TLB)

Health starts in the kitchen. The best thing we can do for our health is to focus on all the amazing foods that God has given us. Fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, nuts, seeds—all these He has graciously given to us. The Bible says, “How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you” Psalm 31:19 (NIV). Food is information. It has the ability to change our genes. It can completely rearrange things, reverse conditions, and give us the vitality we were created to have. Once you start to enjoy real food, you’ll never want to settle for less.

Food for Thought: God has given us an amazing array of foods to nourish and replenish us. What amazing choice will you try today?

Honoring our RetireesWe each have a slightly different view of what retirement will be. At some age—historically around 65—we will stop working for a living and begin to transition into our second act. We will then have time and freedom of choice to do what we want. The beauty of retired life is that we have the ability to customize our retirement lifestyle. But what makes us individually happy can vary, influenced by widely differing tastes, unique passions and our own personal fears. Retirement is a transition from work life to life after work. Here is a little question and answer session from a couple of our retirees:

BEGINNING THE NEXT STAGE OF LIFE...

Pastor Jeff, Senior Pastor1. What will you miss most about being a full time staff member at CUMC? I will miss getting to the church at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings—maybe!

2. What’s next for you? I will continue to be a small part of our staff team.

3. Name four top things on your bucket list? Avoid “kicking it up” for the next few years. Take my grandsons to Disney World. Work at my golf game again. Continue to actively serve.

4. Best advice you would like to share? Live in and enjoy the moment. Live with Jesus as your closest companion. Remember that you’re not as important and necessary as you might think. Make your contribution, but life rolls along.

Faye Sellers, Executive Admin. Assistant1. What will you miss most about being a full time staff member at CUMC? The many relationships developed through serving with staff and laity. And, having to wake to the alarm.

2. What’s next for you? Faye time for meditating, renewing, and listening and learning. I’m excited to see where the journey takes us. I know God has a special ministry in store for John and me.

3. Name three top things on your bucket list? Spending lots of time with family and friends. Visiting new places and making lots of memories. Being a Reformer (however that looks).

4. Best advice you would like to share? Be available and obedient to God!

Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life. Their commonality? A passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during a time of need.

Since 1975, more than 600,000 people from more than 11,000 congregations and other organizations have been trained as Stephen Ministers. Would you like to know more about becoming a Stephen Minister at CUMC? If so, please contact Donna Alexander at 251.510.0905. Your call is confidential.
