I have a very nice little story to tell concerning some visitors to our club last weekend. I had a call last week from a young man named James who explained to me that his Grandfather had just built a plane that was given to him 24 years ago from his son (James's fa-ther) He asked if he could bring the plane out to the field with his grandfather and if we could have a look at it for them Last Sunday James, the grandfather and grandmother came out to the field with a beau-tifully built red Piper Cub (we understand it was a Goldberg kit) Graham Moffat checked the plane over, the engine was duly started and Graham took the plane up for its maiden flight much to the delight of the grandfather and grandson, the plane flew very well, as it was put through its paces. I looked at the grandmother who had a tear in her eye and she explained to me that the plane had sat in the garage for many years and had not been completed until now, and her son (James's father) had died and never got to see his gift fly. This just shows the power of our hobby, a little story about a model plane. Happy Flying Grahame hart

President’s Report to the AGM 05 April 2016. This is my AGM President’s report and it has been my pleasure to have had the opportu-nity to serve the club this past term. I wish to thank the Committee of 2015/2016 for the hard work and dedication that they have put into the club and the representation of our members. To the various section officers, my thanks for the year, you have all done a very good job promoting your disciplines in competition, , torque reports and other activities. In the 2015/2016 year CMAC has maintained its membership and in fact has slightly increased which bodes well for the clubs future. Our club finances are in a healthy state due to prudent spending by the committee and sound financial management by our treasurer Trevor Henderson who has served the club in this role for many years. The main power patch field is mown on a regular basis now by our master mower man Graham Moffat and is looking better and better as time goes on. I would like to give a special thanks to Graham for all of his efforts with the ride on mower, spraying and general tidy up jobs for the club. The electric fence installed around the perimeter of the power patch has made a tremen-dous difference to the club members that fly on that field, our field is arguably now one of the best fields in the country and this is now proven by the comments that are made and usage of the

3

field by different groups such as the tug/glider fraternity etc. Radio Control Power continues to be very popular on club days with a slight trend to-wards RC helicopters, gliders scale planes nitro and electrics are all catered for and there are currently 3 new members learning on the buddy box. Several members have obtained their wings badge in this past year, but as a club we need to ensure that all of the club rules are abided by for the safety of the club members and to this end I would like to see members who do not have a wings badge approaching their respec-tive officers for some form of safety test and familiarization of the club rules. A great deal of work as been done by the Committee through out the year, as a club we need to have a safety policy and Graham Moffat has done a great job in ensuring that we meet the requirements, there is now a fire extinguisher in the container and containers of sand are strategically placed next to the seats should there be some form of fire. Due to the contacts of our committee members (in this case Trevor Henderson) we now have a Port a Loo which will very soon be put in place, just a small hold up as we intend to place in into the bank which requires a digger and operator, one of our members is going to do this when time allows. Activity remains strong in all of the flying disciplines; there have been many outstanding individual efforts in both NDC and National competition. Andrew Palmer has represented the club at the Nationals held just recently at Easter and together with his wife have gained several top finishers. Helicopter flying is popular at the club with 4 current members flying Helis and 1 more keen to try, we also have a new member flying a quad Copter. Pylon continues to be popular with a small but very dedicated group flying on a fort-nightly basis of practice and race days. Gliding continues to be very strong at CMAC with regular competition flying on Satur-days, members of the gliding fraternity in particular Alex Hewson continue to achieve the high-est honors representing New Zealand in international competition. Tomboy flying continues to be very popular and commands the largest turnout on a Sunday competition, so popular has it become that we now have a section officer reporting on the comings and goings at committee meetings, I understand competition is strong between the electric and engine fraternity and as per usual rules have been known to be suspect, but obvi-ously everyone has a great deal of fun. Our Torque magazine continues to be informative and interesting, a lot of hard work goes into the publication of the Torque on a monthly basis, Gary Burrows continues to present a top quality club magazine and should be highly commended for his efforts A special thanks to Mark Venter for his excellent work in organizing the CMAC club nights, these nights are a great opportunity for the members to get together, exchange ideas is a friendly social environment. The CMAC club continues to be strong and a force in the New Zealand model flying scene, the club has been operating for many years and with strong leadership and input from the club members will continue to do so. This concludes my report. I wish you all the best for the forthcoming year. Grahame Hart President 2015/2016

Club night April Meeting was our AGM and we had a good turnout of 19 members and a big wel-come to new member Ross Kay - hope to see you at more of our meetings Ross. Our next club night, May 3rd, will be our long attempted quiz night. No prizes (except some choice Aeromodeller magazines), just fun but if I recollect correctly Gary has promised something interesting for the winner’s) (Please note that the magazines will only be available AFTER the quiz since they will contain many of the answers, however I am not above being bribed!) A request to our techno savvy members - who has a 3D printer? This was one of the re-quests for a future club night, a demo on 3D printing and possible scanning too. I can see quite a few applications in which a 3D printer would be of use in our hobby i.e, print-ing of specific parts for our motors (there is already a guy in the UK printing and selling re-placement rear motor covers with rotary valve/venturi for the old ED diesels), new venturi's, specific size/shape control horns and linkage parts, servo trays, tail wheels and steering assem-blies etc. The list and use could be endless. So if anyone has (or has access to) a 3D printer, I would like to hear from you about giv-ing us a demo. Mark

Minutes of 2016 Annual General Meeting of Christchurch Model Aero Club, held at Papanui / Merivale Cricket Club, 205 Condell Avenue, Christchurch,

7.30pm, Tuesday 5 April 16 Present: Members present: 19 Apologies: Trevor and Lizzie Henderson, Peter Stott, Rob Sherlock, Marco Wuethrich, Grant

Fry, Bruce Weatherall, James Blacklaws, Les King. Minutes of Previous AGM: Approved (Gary Burrows; Graham Hart ) Business arising: Return to the Papanui club was discussed. It appears they cannot accommo-date our monthly meetings. No plausible reason was offered. However, subject is to be fol-lowed up by Mark Venter. The secretary reported that subscriptions came in almost all on time last year which made NZMAA affiliations more straightforward than usual. President’s report: Graham presented his report (as published) which was moved to be ac-cepted by Gary Burrows and seconded by Ian Harvey. Treasurer’s report: With Trevor Henderson not able to attend, Graeme Hart presented the 28th audited treasurers report. After some discussion on some of the finer points, the robust financial situation of the club was noted with no required increase in subscriptions. Report passed when moved by Graeme Hart and seconded by Ian Harvey. Election of officers President: Grahame Hart Secretary: Ian Harvey Treasurer: Trevor Henderson Recording Officer: Gary Burrows

R/C Soaring: Paul Chisholm (with assistance from Scott Chisholm, Dave Griffin, Ian Harvey and Peter France (electric soaring)) R/C Power: Graham Moffat Vintage: Lynn Rodway Indoor (ex officio): Bill Long (who will also attend to any control line matters as well)

Auditor – G.J Smith - B. Comm. Bulletin Editor: Gary Burrows (ex officio) Webmaster: Mark Venter (ex officio) General Business: Trophies: there were some trophies that have not been contested for several years as the classes have become defunct. The question as to what to do with these is still under discussion and con-sideration. Engraving was to be organised by John Beresford. As we have no club trophy cabi-net, it was favoured (by John Ensoll) that winners should retain their trophies throughout the year. In the future, it will be endeavoured to get all engraving done before the AGM. For 2016, all trophies will be retained by the committee for engraving. Monthly meeting venue: It was agreed by all that the present venue should be retained, even though it cost the club $45.00/month. In the meantime, however, other venues will be investi-gated. Portaloo: This was now in place after some problems with getting a drop-hole dug and sighting back into a bank. It was anticipated that it should be operational in a few weeks. The meeting noted the excellent condition of the flying strip but there were concerns regarding the ability of the fence to be dropped during flying at the corner warratahs and Southern stan-dards. The meeting closed at 8:20pm, followed by prize giving and supper.

Down at the Power Patch by graham moffat We have had some good days out at the strip and others not so good. We have some new club members learning to fly. This has now become easier with being able to link two transmitters together wirelessly. We can even be using different modes. The fence at the northern end of the runway has now been modified so that it can be dropped without powering down the fence. Just disconnect the blue spring loaded connectors and the section of the fence is isolated and the fence supports can be dropped to open up the end of the runway. Now that we have done this the wind will always be from the other end of the strip. If this modification is successful and its justified then the same change can be done at the other end. Please remember to connect eve-rything back up after you have finished. Speaking from experience I now leave my car keys on the fence so that I cannot go home without reconnecting the fence. See you at the Strip

Report of the indoor meeting for the 10th of April. This was a mother of all meetings with four N.D.C. events all to be flown within two hours. Try as I might. we are totally ignored by those that do the calendar and as a consequence just accept things as they are. We make up over 90% of all free flight indoor N.D.C. times each year. We all managed to get our times in but with the time restraint performances could have been much better. Dave did the best he could and just went for it in Glider to get times in. I was feeling un-well and even put Kay’s model in the air thinking it was mine. Kay did the best time in F.1.D. This is not uncommon. Overall we all did well in the circumstances. Times are. Times. Tomboy 27th march They say “Lightening doesn’t strike in the same place twice” WRONG this contest shows that it does with Granddad Ensoll pulling off his now famous last flight recovery to take out the contest. I OBGGGG have a theory that Granddad E has worked out the best place in the sky to fly his last flight and would you believe it, it works. 1030hrs over the club container there is a large upward rushing of hot air which is enough to sustain a Tomboy for about 9 minutes, the cause of this hot air is in my opinion caused by the gas bagging of the late arriving R/C power fliers. Now the secret is out will we see more fliers heading there!!!! The contest consisted of 3 flights which had to be progressively increased in time from the base time of 180 seconds (100%) E.G flier 1 first flight was 360seconds (360-180=180/180=100% increase) his score after 1 flight is 200%. Second flight is 540 seconds then (540-360=180/360= 50% increase so his score is now 200%+50% = 250%. Third flight is a bummer of 500seconds as he didn't improve on the second flight of 540 then he scores 0% so his final score is 250%. Now there were lots of ideas on how to get into the winning circle and our best expo-nent at working this out was Mr. Electric Dun-stan but as can be seen from the results cunning doesn’t always work out, you just can’t beat the luck of the old. (Maybe Mr. Electric hadn't given the correct instructions to his new pi-lot!!!) The other thing of note is that all the models were 48” which has caused me to revise the structure of this years contest series there will be 2 classes 36” and 48” with each class competing in its own size this will cause the Tomboy trophy to be shared at the end of the year. The other change to the rules is in the elec-tric side of things with the 48” electric to have a 4 minute motor run which seems to equate more realistically to diesel engine runs and the 36” electric to have a 2 1/2 minute engine run which more realistically equates to the diesel engine runs. Reliable Rodway bucking for the Pulitzer prize for literature Sunday 3rd April looked promising on the weather front arriving early at the Willows bathed in sunshine having just emerged from the mist half a K to the east. John B, Stew M and Lynn turned up hoping to get some Glider flying in. Fortunately Lynn managed to get CLG un-der the belt before we all moved to the RC paddock and within a few minutes a NW kicked in so that was the end of the flying for the day. CLG Lynn 29 23 42 35 36 33 = 198 Sunday 10th April turned out to be a better day with very little wind. Stew M, John B, John E, Bruce B and Lynn turned up for some power, rub-ber and glider flying. Lynn flew 1/2A power and open glider, Stew, Kiwi power and Open glider, John B Open rubber with his P30 model. Bruce was trim-ming out a large power ship with a 2.5 PAW up front and unfortu-nately it landed in the top of a tree im-mediately to the west of the Container and looking as thou it could be there for a while. (he got it back with a little help from a grandson). John E managed a flight with his 48" Tomboy in readiness for another win at the next Tomboy comp. (he selected the rules so he should!!! The “tardis” has landed. In the capable hands of commander in chief Hart and his personal pilot Moffat who with great skill and dexterity landed our new Bog standard Tardis on its beautifully pre-pared runway and revetment created by Fulton Hogan’s mas-ter craftsman Blacklaws (recons that it was easier than pylon racing) though the hole looks like it would receive smashed pylon or Helicopter models with no trouble and is deep enough for about 20 years worth. Prior to this final event there was much behind the scenes work carried out 1. Procurement of the new Tardis was achieved by Big T

Henderson and his immense family connections 2. Site and old (past it used by date) Bog clearance was

achieved by the team of Rodway and Burrows (demolition /removal experts)

3. Delivery of Tardis to the site BGGGG We can now rest in peace knowing that our every whim has been catered for, great job to those concerned and may the relief be appreciated by all in sundry LOOK AFTER IT!!!!!

Paul Chisholm after a long walk to the long drop

Dave Jackson inspecting without a modeling magazine in hand so he wasn’t going to use it!! And not big enough to throw a Chuckie inside. The real Doctor Who Tardis would have been big enough but this is a BOG standard version Sorry

Still needs a cleanout of dust, supply-ing of toilet paper, and door latch (don’t pull the lever as it is part of the ejection system!!!) Since this was written Sadie (AK OBGGGG ) has given it a clean plus added toilet paper, other items to be completed.

Sunday the 10 th of April saw a return to winch launch Soaring again for the NDC 2.4.6.8.10 contest at the Willows. The day turned out to be a clear, standard North Easter, with four keen flyers turning up. Dave Griffin minus a few parts, Ian Harvey and Scott and I. Fortunately for Dave with him and Scott flying the same type of models Scott was able to pro-vide Dave with the bits he had left at home to enable Dave to compete. I decided not to run in the event preferring to use the day as a trimming session as my two ex Scott Pike Perfects that had just been converted to my Futaba radio systems post their time on JR. Peter France also turned up and helped time for Ian after a mishap with his F3K. A good afternoon was had by all lets hope to see more Soarer’s out for the next club/NDC compe-tition.

Nats “Champion of Champions” reports Skipper has gone. Lost at the Nats when I launched radio off. There is a personal first for every thing. Dumb huh? It flew beautifully free flight just like the original! I most miss my really good Cox. Absolutely reliable. (SEE BELOW) 5 foot Gas really is getting close as I finish cov-ering. Very cool looking model but a bit heavy and draggy for competition but I think it will work for TEX-and E duration in place of my even heavier Scram. I loved vintage at this Nats. The standard was very high and it was tough to do well against these match fit north islanders. I found I was needing to use thermals to do well. Over 22 minutes in TEX A and only just ahead of John and Charles.

5 Foot Gas model by Don Donahue

OH Happy Days Speaking of 1/2 ATex, Skipper has been found. Just got a call from an Olive Farmer who picked it up 3 weeks ago so the weather may not have done much damage. It was right on the line I plotted but landed about a Km closer to launch than I calculated. Wendy and I will take a spin up to Clearville this weekend and pick it up. Anthony Koben heard from a mate about a neighbour of his finding a black and orange model and made the connection. While I was talk-ing to the farmer she said "Oh I have just seen your number on it! I could have called you ages ago." Yeah right but all's well that ends well I'm particularly pleased to get my best Cox back as well as a great little model (MESSAGE. SHAPING OF SOLID BALSA TAILPLANES, as known by Big T. Yes, there is an art to sanding a tail plane using say 6mm thick balsa but very simple to do- what do you need, aside from a bit of time -you will need a straight, and about a 300mm long sanding block, about 50mm wide, medium grit sandpaper, a pencil, ruler and the inclina-tion to succeed....rest assured its not difficult, but like most things will take a bit of practice. Ideally the airfoil should be symmetrical- not only because its quite straight forward to make but you don't really need any lift being generated from the tail plane as that is really the job of the elevator. The first thing you must do after cutting out the tail plane shape is to draw a centreline around the four edges of the tail plane and then accurately establish the centreline of the tail plane when viewed from above. The next stage is to establish the highpoint of the airfoil on both the top and the bottom- lets say its 30% of the chord. Mark that line on both top and bottom sur-faces being aware that if the tail plane has a swept back leading edge, and a swept forward trail-ing edges then the highpoint may not be at right angles to the centre line of the tail plane. I prefer to insert a strip of carbon fibre sheet say 10mm wide into a slot at the centreline of the trailing edge, the slot is easily cut with a scalpel blade or a rotary DREMEL saw blade- neither is difficult to do, and will allow for carbon strip to be inserted and then glued in place with thin cyano glue and allowed to cure without the use of activator. This will stiffen what will be a very thin and sharp trailing edge. Sanding of the area behind the highpoint to the trailing edge is best done by sanding at right angles to the grain, it will be quicker but will require a bit more care than sanding with the grain.......proceed with caution and check everything as you proceed using a straight edge or some form of gauge or template. I alternate between sanding the top and the bottom areas to try and ensure that the balsa is not twisted or distorted during the sanding process. If it gets twisted then you may as well start again as it will be very difficult to get straight. Once you are completely satisfied with the sanding of the rear portion of the tail plane then it is time to proceed to the area forward of the highpoint. The leading edge should not be sharp but perhaps say 2mm diameter-the aim is to create a smooth curve/ transition from the high point to the leading edge and again do this sanding with caution. As a guide you can look at both ends of the tail plane and that will give you an idea/ guide as to how good or bad your sanding has been. If that profile doesn't look good then keep on sanding until you are satisfied; but never change the position of the highpoint! Always ensure that you are not sanding in hollows into the tail plane- either in span or chord orientation as they are both very difficult to fix. Once I am completely happy with the sanding I then do a final sand using 600 grit wet and dry paper used dry...this is a bit like the icing on the cake and you will be amazed how this sanding will convert your tail plane into a piece of sculpture. What happens next...depending on your choice of finish will determine the type of hinges that you will require but I generally epoxy resin and fibreglass cloth ( ¾ ounce /square metre) my tail planes, which allows for nylon fabric to be positioned under the TOP layer of fibreglass cloth and that then can become the hinge- this of course requires the elevator to be only partially cut ( and with care) from the tail plane. The epoxy will hold both the fibreglass cloth and the nylon in place and to date have never had a failure.

Editorial Manure. # 137, many more to come

The nationals have been an gone and to all accounts was successful despite numbers being down, I understand that the “Nats” will return to the more normal time of new years holiday period. The reason as I see it is that this last “Nats” seemed, from the results, to be dominated by retired people

While our club was not represented in any great numbers (John Shaw and 2 associ-ated) they did very well Setonia Palmer was second in Aggy (a wondrous perform-ance) and her husband Andrew was in the top echelon of the events that he com-peted in. John Shaw took out F3J against mighty competition. The performance of some of our previous club members was great, Paul Lagan (life member) appears to have broken his nation record in Catapult glider plus other top echelon placings (as we have come to expect from Paul the consummate competitor) Allan Knox also ex-celled by taking out the Champion of Champions. Well done peoples.
