The purple times are when we prepare for the coming of the king. But Jesus doesn’t come as the kind of king people expect. “Lift up your heads, you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.” Psalm 24:7 White: The color of getting ready becomes the color of celebration! White is the light that Jesus brought into the world. “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.” John 1:4 Red: Red is a hot color. The Holy Spirit came as a flame. This fire burns but does not consume. “But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.’” Luke 3:16 Green: Green is the color of growing things. These are the days when we focus on how God helps his people to grow. “That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1:3 “The Circle of the Church Year” Time is like a string with a beginning and an end. In creating the Christian calendar the Church tied the ending that was like a beginning to the beginning that was like an ending, so that we would always remember the beginnings that come out of endings, the life that came from death. December 27: Christmas Sunday Christ has come. The Light of the World came as a little human baby. January 3: Epiphany This is the Sunday when we remember the three kings who traveled from far away and celebrate that Jesus came to be the light for everybody in the whole world. January 10-February 7: Ordinary Time We grow bigger and closer to God every day. February 10: Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday is when we begin the forty day journey of Lent. February 14- March 20: Lent Lent is the time when we journey with Jesus towards the cross and get ready for the celebration of Easter. March 27: Easter Sunday Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! March 27- May 8: Eastertide Easter is such an important holiday that you can’t keep it on one day. It goes on for seven Sundays. At the cross people met King Jesus in a new way and he continues to meet us in new ways. May 8: Ascension Sunday Jesus returned to heaven where he was in the beginning of creation. He promises to come again. May 15: Pentecost Jesus did not leave us alone! He sent a special helper, the Holy Spirit, to live in us. The Holy Spirit helps us to tell the world about Jesus and grow every day. May 22: Trinity Sunday This is the Sunday we wonder at the mystery of the Trinity: God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit, three persons, one God. May 29- Advent 2016: Ordinary Time This is the time after the season of Pentecost when Christians focus on the ordinary daily ways God helps his people to grow. This time is after Pentecost because we need the Holy Spirit to help us grow more like Jesus.
