Courses Redeveloped
Spring 2011: CNSL-A864: Ethics in Individual, Marriage, and Family Counseling
Redeveloped the syllabus and course requirements for this counseling core curriculum course, to
include the teaching of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT)
Code of Ethics so that students pursuing the Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy (LMFT)
credential would have the ethics educational requirement needed to pursue that license.
Summer 2011: CNSL-A863: Fundamentals of Practicum and Internship
Significantly redeveloped this counseling core course to create a realistic counseling experience
in which students who are one semester from beginning Practicum, form their own mock mental
health counseling “agency”. Students name the agency, create a mission statement and intake
form, as well as develop policies for the counselors and clients. Clients are hired actors, who are
licensed mental health professionals (either LPCs or Social Workers). Students conduct 8-9
counseling sessions with these paid actors and participate in case consultation in order to create
the most realistic practicum and internship experience and to better prepare them for their field
work.
Fall 2010: CNSL- A776: Measurement and Assessment:
Partnered with the Loyola Counseling Center to have the students in this course conduct the
Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) in the student center for any student on campus who elected to
take the screening. Students experience giving, scoring and discussing results with participants.
Any participant who was assessed as needing to see a staff counselor either immediately or to
schedule an appointment, was referred by the student to the staff counselor who was available in
the screening area. This is now a routine partnership and assignment for the course every fall
semester. Additionally every spring semester, students who have completed the Measurement
and Assessment course can volunteer to give the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) in the spring
semester.
Courses Created
Summer 2009: CNSL-A851: School Counseling
Developed the course and syllabus for a new elective in School Counseling. As part of the
requirements for individuals to be eligible to receive an Ancillary Certification for School
Counseling in the state of Louisiana, students must take a School Counseling course and
complete a Practicum or Internship in a school. Not only is this a course that current students
who want to work with children or in a school are drawn to, but several graduates of our program
and other counseling programs have returned to take the course in order to qualify for the
certification.
