    Renewable Energy in the World

RE supplied an estimated 17% of global final energy consumption

UN Secretary Generals goal : doubling the share of renewable energy in the

global energy mix by 2030Renewable energy continued to grow strongly despite policy uncertainty insome countries, the geography of renewables is expanding as prices fall andpolicies spread

    Global Market Overview Power Markets

Renewables accounted for nearlyhalf of the estimated 208GW of newelectric capacity installed in 2011

Renewable electric power capacityworldwide reached 1,360 GW (+8%)

    in 2011Non hydro renewables exceeded390GW, a 24% increase over 2010

Renewable energy comprised morethan 25% of global powergeneration capacity

20.3% of global electricity wasproduced from renewable energy

Global Market Overview Heating/Cooling and Transport Markets

    Heating and Cooling

Transition towards the use of larger systems, increasing use of CHPand district schemes.

Growing trend to use solar resources to generate process heat forindustry. Solar hot water used in over 200 million households andcommercial buildings. Over 50% of these being in China.

    Transport

RE used in form of electricity, hydrogen, biogas, liquid biofuels.Liquid biofuels provided 3% of global road transport fuel in 2011.

Electric transport is being tied directly with renewable energythrough policy directives in many countries.

    Industry Trends

RE industry saw continued growth in manufacturing, sales and installation

Remarkable growth in the biogas industry, especially in EuropeCost reductions (especially in PV and onshore wind) contributed to growth

Changing policy landscape in many countries industry uncertainties, declining policy support, international financial crisis and barriers to trade

    Trends:

Diversification in to new marketsIndustry consolidation Emergence of increasingly vertically integrated supply chainsManufacturers expanding into project development

Worldwide jobs in renewable energy industries exceeded 5 million in 2011;clustered primarily in bioenergy and solar hot water industries.

    Investment Flows

Total global investment in RE jumped in2011to a record of $257 billion , up 17%

from 2010.This is 6 times the level of investment in2004 and 94% more than the totalinvestment in RE in 2007

    Total investment exceeds

$267 billion including estimated $10billion (unreported) invested insolar hot water

~$282 billion including the $25billion invested in large hydropower(>50 MW)

Despite the rise in investment, the rate of growth of investment was below the 37%rise in investment from 2009 to 2010.

Policy Targets for RE in Asia Pacific

    Examples of successful policy measures

taken in 2011 include:Targets: India targeted the addition of 130MW of off-grid capacity in 2011

Heating and Cooling: South Korearequired all public buildings larger than3000m 2 to generate at least 10% of total heat demand through RE

Transport: China is a significant part of the mandate calling for 220billion litersof biofuel by 2022

Labelling: Japan introduced the Greenheat Certification Programme in 2010for solar thermal, adding biomass in2011

Rural Renewable Energy in Asia Pacific

    Electricity Access by Region

Countries such as Bangladesh,Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Pakistancontinue to experience very low ratesof rural electrification and to relylargely on traditional biomass

Philippines expanded its existingRural Electrification Programme in2011 with the goal of achieving 90%household electrification by 2017

In Iran the Power Ministry, haselectrified more than 233 householdswith decentralised PV systems.
