Joy to the World

Page 2: Christmas - American Public Media · proclaim the Christmas Gospel in music, the Word, and the visual arts. Proclaiming Jesus’s birth is the essence of Christmas at Luther. Through

In reflecting on the angel’s proclamation to the shepherds—“Fear not, for behold I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people!”—Martin Luther observed that this joy was not “just to apostles, prophets, and martyrs, but to you.” God announces a Savior who will free us from all fear: Come, see the Baby Jesus! It is a gift of pure joy we are to receive, and the way to receive it is to let Christ be born in us.

Christ is born in us when we live in the vision of a future grounded in the joy and grace of God’s abundance. He is born in us when we reflect God’s love and compassion in service to our neighbor. He is born in us when we proclaim the Christmas Gospel in music, the Word, and the visual arts.

Proclaiming Jesus’s birth is the essence of Christmas at Luther. Through choristers and bells, brass, percussion, and strings, more than 600 student musicians bring joy to the world. May their jubilation stir your soul and connect you with the power and radiance of God’s love.

Set DesignThe combination of scripture and music with visual art can be very powerful. As I really listened to the words and Wilberg’s arrangement of “Joy to the World,” I was struck by the incredible gifts we have been given—this precious planet and all we need from day to day. In the center of this is the Christ Child, who came to reconcile us to our Creator. Every animal and plant I’ve chosen is a recognizable Christian symbol. So it speaks on two levels—the obvious gift of tangible things of nature and the deeper, symbolic gifts of reconciliation, grace, love, and forgiveness. God’s Spirit moves in and through the world.

As an alumna of Luther College and a Decorah native, I have dreamed of painting the backdrop for this concert for many years. This year, it all came together. Joy to the world! Soli deo Gloria!

Dedicated in memory of my father, Robert Sand ’45, and in honor of my mother, Verna Sand ’48.

Music at Luther (http://music.luther.edu)The Luther campus is alive with the sounds of seven choirs, three bands, three orchestras, and two jazz bands. Nearly 1,000 student musicians participate in our large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons, and master classes. More than 350 students pursue the rigorous Luther music major, studying music theory/ear training, history, music education, composition, church music, and performance. It all adds up to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world!

Martin Luther—our namesake—believed music to be “one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.” For over 130 years Luther students have been sharing this marvelous gift with audiences across the country and around the globe.

Music at Luther

Luther College (www.luther.edu) Founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants, Luther College is affiliated with the Lutheran church (ELCA). A Phi Beta Kappa institution, Luther is one of the outstanding liberal arts colleges in the Midwest.

Luther offers more than 60 majors and pre-professional and certificate programs leading to the bachelor of arts degree.

The college’s strong academic program includes internships, professional semesters, and extensive study-abroad opportunities. Cocurricular activities include 15 music ensembles and 19 intercollegiate sports for men and women.

Luther’s scenic campus, with the Upper Iowa River running adjacent to a portion of its 800 acres, rivals any in the region.
