ChristmasCarol Concert

Exeter Cathedral

7:30pm

Tuesday 18 December 2012

Retiring Collection for FF Charity and FF Memorial Trust

The North Devon Pipe Band is made up from a small contingent of both ex-pat Scots and devoted north Devonians, committed to keeping the sound of the great highland bagpipe alive here in the deep southwest of England.

DSFRS is grateful for their regular attendance at joint events such as the carol concert here in Exeter this evening.

The band practise twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday nights between 1900 and 2100, at the Barnstaple Sea Cadet hut in Barnstaple North Devon. Anyone who has a desire to learn how

to play the instruments in a pipe band, or to continue playing from any standard, is always welcome in our band. Our pipe corps is currently under instruction from Graham Gisbey.

The band plays at various engagements ranging from charity fund raising events to military tattoos and has been known to travel some distance, with engagements in France, Scotland, Belgium and even New York (all with considerable social elements included!).

Since 2003 they have also participated in the November 11 Remembrance parade and service at Menin Gate and Cathedral in Ypres, Belgium.

In 2007 and 2008 the band accompanied the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Ceremonial Unit to the Luxembourg Military Tattoo and in 2009 the band was invited to participate in the 65th Anniversary of ‘Operation Market Garden’ in Arnhem, Holland.

From Mark Healey, Chairman Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Authority

It is with very great pleasure that I welcome you all to our Christmas celebration. I am grateful for all the help that we have received from the Dean and Chapter of our great Cathedral Church.

Our Ceremonial Unit attends many functions throughout the year and we are proud of the way in which they represent the Service so well.

We are delighted to welcome so many civic representatives from the local authorities in which we serve and we are also particularly pleased that we have Lord Lieutenant representation here with us tonight.

On behalf of the Authority I would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

From Lee Howell, Chief Fire Officer

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue ServiceI am very proud of the service we provide to protect the 1.8 million people in Devon and Somerset and at this time of year we reflect on what we have achieved and focus on what we might do even better next year.

However, Christmas is not only a time of reflection but also one of celebration and goodwill and it is with this in mind that I would like to welcome you to our Christmas Carol Concert.

This is the third event of this type for the Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service and we would hope that it continues to be a regular feature in your build up to Christmas, creating a happy and informal opportunity to meet friends and colleagues, while setting the scene for a peaceful and happy Christmas.

The First Noel

The First Noel, the angels did sayWas to certain poor shepherds in fields as they layIn fields where they, lay keeping their sheepOn a cold winter’s night that was so deep.Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel!

They lookéd up and saw a starShining in the East beyond them farAnd to the earth it gave great lightAnd so it continued both day and night.Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel!

And by the light of that same starThree Wise men came from country farTo seek for a King was their intentAnd to follow the star wherever it went.Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel!

This star drew nigh to the northwestO’er Bethlehem it took its restAnd there it did both pause and stayRight o’er the place where Jesus lay.Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel!

Then entered in those Wise men threeFull reverently upon their kneeAnd offered there in His presenceTheir gold and myrrh and frankincense.Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel!

Then let us all with one accordSing praises to our Heavenly LordThat hath made Heaven and earth of noughtAnd with his blood mankind has bought.Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel!

and a Happy New Year

Once in Royal David’s City

Once in royal David’s cityStood a lowly cattle shed,Where a mother laid her Baby,In a manger for His bed:Mary was that mother mild,Jesus Christ, her little Child.

He came down to earth from Heaven,Who is God and Lord of all,And His shelter was a stable,And His cradle was a stall:With the poor, and mean, and lowly,Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

For He is our childhood’s pattern;Day by day, like us, He grew;He was little, weak, and helpless,Tears and smiles, like us He knew; And He feeleth for our sadnessAnd He shareth in our gladness.

And our eyes at last shall see Him,Through His own redeeming love; For that Child so dear and gentle,Is our Lord in Heaven above:And He leads His children on,To the place where He is gone.

Merry Christmas

While Shepherds Watched

While shepherds watched their flocks by nightAll seated on the groundThe angel of the Lord came downAnd glory shone around.

“Fear not,” said he, for mighty dreadHad seized their troubled minds.“Glad tidings of great joy I bringTo you and all mankind.”

“To you in David’s town this dayIs born of David’s lineA Saviour who is Christ the LordAnd this shall be the sign.”

Thus spake the seraph, and forthwithAppeared a shining throngOf angels praising God, who thusAddressed their joyful song.

“All glory be to God on highAnd on the earth be peace;Goodwill henceforth from Heaven to menBegin and never cease!”

and a Happy New Year

Silent Night

Silent night, holy nightAll is calm, all is brightRound yon Virgin Mother and ChildHoly Infant so tender and mildSleep in Heavenly peaceSleep in Heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night!Shepherds quake at the sightGlories stream from Heaven afarHeavenly hosts sing Alleluia!Christ, the Saviour is bornChrist, the Saviour is born.

Silent night, holy nightSon of God, love’s pure lightRadiant beams from Thy holy faceWith the dawn of redeeming graceJesus, Lord, at Thy birthJesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

Merry Christmas

Firefighter’s Prayer

When I am called to duty, God,wherever flames may rage, give me strength to save a life, whatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little childbefore it is too late,or save an older person fromthe horror of that fate.Enable me to be alert, and hear the weakest shout, quickly and efficientlyto put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling,to give the best in me,to guard my friend and neighbour, and protect their property. And if according to Your willI must answer death’s call, bless with Your protecting hand,my family one and all.

Amen.

Make sure you stay safe this Christmas

Follow our 12 days of Christmas advice

Check your Christmas tree lights are in good working order

and conform to the British Safety Standard. Never overload electrical sockets.

Always switch off your Christmas lights before you go

to bed or go out.

Never place lit candles near your Christmas tree,

decorations or furnishings and never leave a burning candle unattended.

Decorations can burn easily – don’t attach them to lights or

heaters.

Keep matches, lighters and candles out of children’s reach.

The risks of accidents, especially in the kitchen, are

greater after alcohol is consumed – take care if you’re having a few festive drinks.

Never leave your Christmas dinner cooking unattended

and make sure you switch off the oven and hob if you’re leaving the house.

Make sure that any visitors who are staying with you over

the festive period know what to do in the event of an emergency and practice your escape plan. Remember to tell them where you keep door/window keys so they can escape safely if a fire starts.

Many fires start when people fall asleep whilst smoking,

ensure you extinguish cigarettes properly and never smoke in bed.

If you are planning on celebrating with fireworks,

store them in a metal box, read the instructions and never go back to a lit firework.

Remember to test your smoke alarm every week and use

Christmas as a reminder to clean it and remove dust.

This Christmas take the time to check on elderly relatives and

neighbours and make sure they are fire safe.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service wish you a very merry Christmas and a safe new year!
