Happy New year 2019The Board of Directors, CEO and the Team at CEPA hope that all our members have had a joyous Christmas and have a Happy New Year. Members will be pleased to know that the Co-operative

continues to grow and gain financial strength through an ever expanding membership base and our commitment to the Co-operative ethos, exceptional service and good management.

As everyone will be aware, it’s been a tough year, the drought has bitten hard and continues to do so. Hay and grain stocks are extremely low and the costs of production for farmers (eg: water, diesel, freight

and labour) have all continued to increase.Luckily, we have been able to source good quantities of quality hay (Lucerne, Oaten & Ryegrass) that will see us through 2019. Unfortunately, there has been a modest price rise, however CEPA continues to be the most cost effective retail option in the region. Grain prices have risen dramatically, and as farmers

stocks are exhausted, it is expected that prices will continue to rise. CEPA is currently confident of being able to source grain in the short term however 2019 will test our resources. Regardless, CEPA remains

EquinE Tips - sand ingEsTionHorses on sparse pastures under drought conditions have a higher risk of ingesting sand and soil as well as feeding in sandy holding yards. Although it is mostly a seasonal occurrence, diarrhoea due to sand and impaction colic can be a serious problem. Often symptoms occur 7-10 days after the break of the season or heavy rain after a dry period when grazing new, poorly rooted grass.

A supplement of a minimum of 70-100g psyllium husk per 100kg body weight, or up to 1g/kg bodyweight for horses grazing sandy areas, given for 2 consecutive days once per month, mixed with coarse roughage. Or 1 cup of D&M Stockfeeds Sand Purge mixed with daily feed during those high risk periods.

Turning out your older, well-conditioned show, dressage horse or pony out over the Christmas holiday season?

Be aware that there is a high risk of summer acute laminitis and founder within 3-4 days of full time grazing.

If this occurs, it’s recommended by Kohnke’s Own that horses should be in a yard overnight and fed soaked hay and a small snack of dampened chaff with a supplement of Kohnke’s Own TRIM.

TRIM maintains a safe sugar metabolism for horses at risk of laminitis due to underlying Insulin Resistance.

Travelling with your horse in Hot Weather?

5 days before, during travel and competition mix 30g of Kohnke’s Own Cell Salts for a 500kg horse and equal amount of plain, fine salt into the feed each day to maintain normal blood salt levels.

Prior to, during travel and rest stops provide dampened hay and 5 litres per 100kg body weight of cool clean water.
