Christmas Greetings to our Penguin Families! It’s hard to believe that the year has almost come to a
close and the surf club season is more than half
complete. We’ve had such a great season with the
weather, and many weekends where the kids have been
able to test their skills out in the ocean.
The final club meet for 2014 will be our Christmas Fun
Day on Sunday 21 December, with activities
commencing late at 2:00pm, a very special visitor at
2:30pm. Then follows the 59th Christmas Handicap
Swim and social dinner involving both the Juniors and
Seniors. Our nippers in the U12s and over who are
competition proficient and parents may enter the
handicap swim – registrations will be taken at 3:15pm,
with the swim to start at approximately 3:45pm. The
presentation, dinner and drinks will then take place from
5:30pm. Dinner will be chickos at $5 per person. A table
will be set up for Centenary Ball Ticket and
Centenary/Club Apparel Sales. All club members
welcome!

Shannon Eckstein Nipper Clinic Legendary Ironman Shannon Eckstein came to Wollongong City Beach last week (pictured below with a few of
the kids) to pass on some expert advice to the local surf club kids from around the Illawarra. It was a great day
where the children had the opportunity to ask Shannon about everything he knows about competing, staying fit
and healthy. The surf came to City Beach too, with heaps of big waves for all the kids to try out their newly
learnt skills. Thanks to the Bulli Surf Club crew for their assistance and the Wollongong City parents who came
down to assist – it was a very successful day for the club and the kids, with great positive feedback from the
participants. The next clinic is being held at Bulli on Saturday 7 February – don’t miss out!

Age Group Photos We are in the process of finalising age group photos. They
include the names of the children, their age manager and
assistant. The cost of the 6” x 8” photo will be $5 and is a
great Centenary memento and gift idea. Parents will be able
to view the photos throughout December, place orders and
make payment for collection from Linda at the Clubhouse
in the new year.
The annual Stacey Jolly Competition was held between Wollongong City and North Wollongong
Junior Surf clubs on Sunday 30 November. The naming of the trophy is to recognise 18 year old
Stacey’s tragic passing before her time and the contribution of the Jolly family to Wollongong
City SLSC. Close to 300 children from both clubs competed in a number of events, including
the swim, board, flags, sprint, wade, ironman and relays. The event, now in its 26th year, has always been a friendly competition that the children
enjoy. Top 10 placings were dominated by City across the 9 age groups, given City were high in numbers at least 2 to 1! This year's competition
was again a successful event, where the tradition of friendly rivalry and interclub comraderie proved to be the winners on the day!
Shannon Eckstein Nipper Clinic Note down in your diaries the next Shannon Eckstein
clinic – being held at Bulli Beach on Saturday 7 February
2015. Based on the feedback we received from the first
clinic, this is something not to be missed.
More information on Shannon's clinics can be viewed at

The Sydney Water Premiership Series
concluded on Saturday 30 November with some outstanding results by our competitors, the top 6 competitors taking home a Sydney Water prize. Natalia Karakousis of the U13s
and Matisse Sailor both placed equal 3rd in the beach events, whilst twin brother Jordan Karakousis and Tobias Delaney of the 10s finished 5th overall. James Healey of the U11s and Charlotte Bett of the U13s were just out of the prizes placing 7th and 8th respectively in the beach events. Special mention to Lachlan Eastley of the U8s who consistently finished in the finals of the U8s sprints, assisted the U9s to place in the beach relay, and was a top 10 finisher in the wade as well – a great career ahead for this young competitor! The final event of the series was the All Age Beach Relay, and our team came in 2nd by a nose – a great team effort. Our U13s beach relay team of Natalia & Jordon Karakousis, Matisse Sailor and Charlotte Bett also placed 2nd. The final standings for Wollongong City kids on the leaderboard:

EDUCATING OUR KIDS - THE FUTURE LIFESAVERS OF TOMORROW
During this week, 35+ kids commenced their 3 day Intensive SRC and Bronze Medallion training,
including a number of our U13s and U14s. A massive thanks to Larry Jennett, Wollongong City's Chief
Instructor (and life member) - he does a great job with them all, and puts in a lot of hours! Oh, and he can
ride a board too – judging by the front page of the Illawarra Mercury on 9 December.
Congratulations to the kids! See you all
on the beach in uniform real soon!
Carnivals Carnivals are open to all Wollongong
City kids aged U8s and over. You can
still register to enter the Illawarra Branch
carnival that takes place on Saturday 31
January 2015 at North Gong. If you are
thinking of joining the team, please
register and pay the $20 entry fee in
Apparel - you will need to have
completed the competition proficiency.
SLS Illawarra has announced a second
Illawarra Junior carnival to take place on
Saturday 21 February 2015 at Thirroul
Beach. Entry for this carnival is $10.
This is another great carnival for first
timers, as the competitors are from the
local region. It’s also a great opportunity
for our State team members to get
practice for the NSW Championships
being held on 6-8 March. Any member
who paid the $70 for carnivals at
registration have automatic entry to this
carnival. Please confirm your attendance
on the Entry List on the notice board.
Board Training Board training will resume on Friday 16
January (4:15pm for 4:30pm in the
water).
A reminder that members may utilise the
club facilities throughout the Christmas
holiday period – generally the clubhouse
is open. Use of the equipment is at the
responsibility of parents, children must
be supervised at all times, and boards
hosed down and returned to the
clubhouse racks after use.
Late Start Christmas Funday Reminder – Sunday 21 December, late start for
Christmas Funday, activities commencing from
2:00pm, with a very special visitor at 2:30pm. Stay
for the Annual Christmas Handicap swim at 3:45pm,
with a smorgasbord dinner and drinks afterwards.
All are invited and welcome to partake in the
handicap swim (U12s+ and proficient), whether as
competitor or spectator, and then the function
afterwards with the seniors. For catering
purposes, please let age managers know if you
are staying for the Christmas dinner. Cost for the
Chickos dinner is $5 each.
Nippers will then take a break, returning Sunday 18
January 2015. Please stay safe in and out of the
water during the summer break.
