Clubhouse Meetings & Activities

Indianola Garden Club NewsOnly how many days until Christmas? I’m always surprised at how time flies at this time of year. It seems like the garden club’s November meeting was just held and the December meeting is just around the corner.

On November 15, Keith Dekker from Plant Amnesty shared tips on the correct way to keep overgrown plants and shrubbery under control.  It was great information that we all can use.

On December 20, we will again gather at the clubhouse at noon for our holiday potluck and gift exchange.   The space will be awash in greenery and glitter, thanks to the  efforts of Marilynn Moller, Susan Hancock, Cindy Logan and Mary Eakin. Members are asked to bring a celebratory dish to share as well as a garden or food related gift costing about $15. Guests are welcome.

For more information or if you have questions about Indianola Garden Club, please call Sue McClain at 360 297-3473or Nancy Niemi and 360 297-1245.

Happy Holidays!

Movie Night, Wednesday December 27 • 7:00 PM

Those of you who have long called Indianola home might notice some changes taking place within the pages of The Breeze. Sarah Runnels has graciously given her time and energy as the editor for the past few years, but she has now passed the role on to others. New Trustee Dionne Deschenne has agreed to take on the role of Breeze editor with support from more tenured Trustees Emily Record and Juliana Pickrell. It is a big job and it is going to take a few editions for us to get anywhere near as good as Sarah has become, but we will do our best. She is a tough act to follow!

We hope that you all will join us in thanking Sarah for the many hours that she has volunteered putting out our monthly paper for the last few years, and for all of the other wonderful things that she does to support our community. Thank you, Sarah! We are grateful for all that you do for Indianola!

With the change in editor come a few other changes. This month we will begin running a column on the history of this remarkable area, with local old-timers contributing to those stories. If you or someone you know have stories, old pictures, old news clippings, or other memorabilia, we would love to hear from you.

Also, we will soon begin a monthly almanac column, noting moon and tide cycles, frost and freeze dates, and other meteorological and astronomical events of significance for this area.

As always, we invite all of you to let us know what you would like to see in our town newspaper. It is a community paper and we will do our best to put out a paper that truly serves the needs and interests of our community, so please do send your thoughts and suggestions to [email protected].

Do you have bulging bookshelves and need to weed out some titles? Our Kingston branch of the Kitsap Regional Library would like to have them, as used book sales are a significant way to support the library. Sue Milling would be happy to collect your books and take them to the library. Just drop your books off on her front porch at 8851 Loughrey. Make sure they are in sturdy bags or boxes, and not too heavy, please. The library accepts donations of books, cds, dvds, and complete puzzles and games.

They cannot accept cassette tapes, VHS tapes, books that are damaged (i.e. broken spines, loose or torn pages, pages that have been written on), books that are moldy, dirty, damp, or water damaged, encyclopedias, old computer manuals, or old textbooks.

The next used book sale is December 2.

Go to the Clubhouse’s merchandise shop Saturdays from 9:30 until noon. If not picked up soon, they will be mailed, and that costs

the IBIC funds.

Have community improvement ideas?

The Board will be reviewing suggestions at the February meeting, so please email ideas before 2/1. [email protected]

Food Drive Boxes Have Arrived

We will be starting our annual food drive November 15th and it will continue through January 15th. There will be drop-off

boxes for nonperishable items in the Indianola Store and on the Clubhouse porch. If you would rather give a cash donation, this can be given to IBIC and earmarked for the food drive. All

donations will be given to ShareNet in Kingston.

The delay is due to numerous issues and challenges, including encountering old buried wooden pilings and associated contaminated material, a revised sanitary sewer design, and labor and materials shortages, which disrupted the construction schedule. The onset of the winter weather months will also add to the delay as final work on the project, such as paving, depends on fair weather.Kitsap County and the contractor, Redside Construction, recognize the inconvenience this delay may cause and

are working closely together to assure the project moves forward to completion in March. The new West Kingston bridge project replaces a small culvert with a two-span, 150-foot bridge, restores tidal function in the Carpenter Creek Estuary, enhances fish passage, and widens the stream channel. There are many safety benefits of the project as well, including wider travel lanes, street illumination, a five-foot pedestrian sidewalk and a five-foot bike lane on the north side.

Local Updates

This, just in from Kitsap County… The completion of the West Kingston bridge project is delayed until

March 2018. The road will remain closed until construction is complete.

The life jacket kiosk has a new sign. Be sure to take a look!

Indianola History

Around here, people frequently ask, who is part of the Indianola community? The original bylaws to the community club stated that anyone who was interested was invited to be a member. The question that often follows is, what section of land constitutes Indianola? That is harder to answer, as it depends on who you talk with.

The first real estate development plat was called Indianola Beach. It delineated small lots for vacation properties for residents of Seattle and the surrounding areas. Long ago, a community club adopted the name of Indianola Beach Improvement Club (IBIC). At that time, no roads led to Indianola and the only access was by ferry boat.

The post office at that time did not allow a name consisting of the two words Indianola Beach, so for many years the post office was named Kitsap. Eventually, in 1959, the post office name was changed to Indianola. This created a second boundary for our town, based on postal lines. The community club, however has retained the name of Indianola Beach.

Many of the local residents are confounded by the many Indianola properties that have a Poulsbo mailing address. It is simply another of the many oddities in our little town. The Indianola Post Office map does not include street addresses of the original plat map houses.

As roads have been built and more people have cars, allowing for longer commutes to work, development has occurred, houses have replaced the woods, and the boundaries have expanded.

The outskirts of Indianola now intermingle with Kingston and Suquamish. The census maps now include an area that they call Indianola, and recently the Indianola Beach Improvement Club adopted a real estate definition of the boundaries that excludes significant portions of the population who reside elsewhere.

The apparent conclusion is that you are a member of the Indianola Community if you think you are.

If so, we want to talk with you! The IBIC is working on a project and wants to talk with anyone with a collection of Indianola T’s. Contact Paul Larson at [email protected]
