1379 Friday 15 December 2017 Dear Members of the Loyola College Community, This is the final newsletter for the school year and there are many interesting events to share with the College community. This year has ended on a very positive note for all the remaining year levels with Masses and celebratory events. The final week for staff has been very busy with finalising Semester Reports, planning meetings for 2018 and the induction of new staff. Christmas Market Carols Night Despite the inclement weather, the Christmas Market held in Loyola Companions Hall was well patronised this year as was our ninth Carols night held in MPAC attended by families and staff on Sunday 3 December. The interior of the Inigo Theatre was beautifully lit up for the occasion thanks to Mr Tran and a special visit from Santa added to the spirit of the evening. I extend my thanks to Mr Williamson, our Director of Music and to the all the music staff together with the students who performed, as well as to Mr O‘Keefe, Head of Performing Arts who was our Master of Ceremonies for the evening. As has been the custom over a number of years now the Old Loyola tower was lit up with a beautiful Christmas lights display which will be visible every evening from 9.00pm. I thank Mrs Alonso, Community Liaison and the LPFA for organising the Market stalls. Congratulations to all involved in these two wonderful events. Australian Catholic Youth Festival I thank Mr Tran and Ms Veis for accompanying a group of Loyola students to Sydney to attend the Australian Catholic Youth Festival held in the first week of December. This is a wonderful opportunity for our young people to experience the Church and its mission to the young. I look forward to hearing of their experiences next year. The Church has declared 2018 the Year of Youth and we look forward to engaging our students in the activities that will be organised for them. Annual Awards Evening This was held on Friday 8 December in the Loyola Companions Hall and was another successful evening attended by over 800 guests comprising staff, students and their families. Our special guest this year was Dr Jessica Fusella (L: 01-05). I thank Mrs Devlin, Director of Communications & Events for overseeing the organisation of the evening. I congratulate the recipients of all awards and in particular the recipients of the following four very important awards presented on the evening: Insignis Medal 2017 This is the highest award a Loyola student can receive and is presented annually to a Year 12 student. The medal is awarded to a student whom St Ignatius would have happily had as one of his companions. This year we congratulate Antonia Gazzana on being the recipient of the Insignis Medal.

1379 Friday 15 December 2017 Dear Members of the Loyola College Community,

This is the final newsletter for the school year and there are many interesting events to share with the College community.

I congratulate the recipients of all awards and in particular the recipients of the following four very important awards presented on the evening:

Insignis Medal 2017 This is the highest award a Loyola student can receive and is presented annually to a Year 12 student. The medal is awarded to a student whom St Ignatius would have happily had as one of his companions. This year we congratulate Antonia Gazzana on being the recipient of the Insignis Medal.

College Medals 2017 St Ignatius Medal

This medal is awarded to a current or former student who has given service in a pastoral or leadership capacity and has shown loyalty and commitment to the College throughout his/her time as a student.

This year’s recipient is Thomas Kelly (L: 12-17)

Loyola Medal This medal will be awarded to a current or former staff member, Canonical Administrator or chaplain who has given service in a pastoral or professional capacity and has shown loyalty and commitment to the College for an extended period of time.

This year’s recipient is Fr Gerry Healy SJ

Jesuit Medal This medal will be awarded to a current or former parent or College friend who has given service in a pastoral, professional or leadership capacity and has shown loyalty and commitment to the College for an extended period of time.

This year’s recipient is Mrs Michelle Garzia

VCE/VCAL Results of the Class of 2017 At the time of writing this year’s Year 12 results had not as yet been published. A full report will be given in the first newsletter of 2018. We wish all our students the best of luck when the results are announced.

Italian Hospitality Tour I wish Mrs Chapman and Ms Gartland a safe and successful trip as they accompany a group of nine Loyola students on a Hospitality tour to Italy, including a homestay with our sister school IPSSAR Maffioli in Castelfranco Veneto, Italy from late December to mid-January. We look forward to hearing of their wonderful experiences next year.

Staffing Matters At this time of the year we farewell staff who are leaving the College. We thank them for their contribution to the life of Loyola and wish them well for the future.

Our best wishes and thanks go to staff leaving the College.

The following staff will complete contract positions: Sara Borghesi, Andrea Carnovale, Denise Chang-Faux, Andrea Groom, Stacy Pouliot and Emma Still.

The following staff will be resigning from the College: Natalie Coward (L: 16) who will be moving interstate to Queensland. Laurie Gunn (L: 16) who has accepted an appointment at Our Lady of Mercy. Heath McClaer (L: 11) who has accepted an appointment at Kolbe Catholic College. Anne Stubbings (L: 09) who will be retiring. Leanne Whiteroad (L: 17) who has accepted an appointment at Genazzano FCJ College.

The following staff will be on leave: David Ferrante (Term 1 & 2) Pina Mastrippolito (Term 1) Martin Murnane (Term 1 & 2)

Kieren Prowse (Term 1)

We also farewell our language assistants, Helene Gerard and Giulia Silvestrucci.

A full list of new staff will appear in the first Ignatian in 2018.

I take this opportunity of thanking the College staff for their dedication and hard work this year in supporting our students and families. Meeting the educational needs of our students is an ongoing challenge for all of us and for those who work in Catholic schools it is a vocation of service. I greatly appreciate and value the support that the whole College Leadership team has given me in leading the Loyola Community.

Christmas Greetings As this year draws to a close I wish to thank all who have contributed to its success. The year has again passed amazingly quickly and Christmas celebrations are beginning. This year we have reflected on the theme “Setting hearts on fire” We have seen many examples of the living out of this theme through the actions of many members of our College community who have shared their many gifts and talents with us in the service of our community.

As we move towards the feast of Christmas let us take the time in this Advent season to prepare ourselves for the celebration of the Saviours’ birth reflecting on what that means for us in today’s world.

This Christmas prayer (Origins St Augustine of Hippo AD 354-440) came past my desk from the Columban Mission Society and I share it with you:

Justice for Christmas

Let the just rejoice, for the Justifier is born. Let the sick and infirm rejoice for their Saviour is born. Let the captives rejoice, for their Redeemer is born. Let all rejoice, for their Liberator is born. Let all Christians rejoice, for Jesus Christ is born.

I wish all a happy, safe and blessed Christmas and look forward to having a wonderful New Year with the Loyola community in 2018.

Australian Catholic Youth Festival Five very enthusiastic students and two equally enthusiastic staff departed Tullamarine airport on Wednesday 06 December bound for Sydney to join 19,000 other young people for the Australian Catholic Youth Festival.

This event launched the Australian Church’s Year of Youth and also marked the beginning of the 10th anniversary of Sydney’s hosting the 2008 World Youth Day.

After settling into the accommodation in Randwick the group headed to the City for dinner and the spectacular “Lights of Christmas” at St Mary’s Cathedral.

Then it was back ‘home’ to prepare for the festival opening. The first two days were a mix of workshops and activities based around the Sydney Showgrounds. Highlights included mixing with other pilgrims, Bishop Christopher Prowse’s talk on “God’s Crazy Path” and assisting the Vinnies group in preparing packs for their night patrol vans.

The final day was a big one! It started with a workshop that was followed by a MEGA concert. Matt Maher, an international musician, was one of the performers. At midday, all the pilgrims boarded buses and trains and headed out to their various pilgrimage starting points. Ours was the Shrine of Mary MacKillop in North Sydney. The train journey was a highlight with whole carriages singing songs, jumping up and down – that train literally rocked!

Our 3 hour pilgrimage walk took us over the Harbour Bridge and through the city to the Domain. Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP presided over the most amazing mass the students had ever attended with over 20,000 other people.

Mr Christopher Lynch Direct Line: 9433 0227

There was full, energetic crowd participation, an inspiration homily and very moving reflective periods. The Festival concluded with a fireworks display.

The students are very appreciative of the wonderful, caring leadership of our staff and wish to thank Mr John Tran for his organisation and Ms Fotini Veis for looking after and accompanying them.

2017 certainly has been a very exciting year for our students and as we approach Christmas, it is worth reflecting on our year. Parents and guardians will receive their reports in the next few weeks and it is important to celebrate the successes and consider how to improve in 2018.

I would like to thank the teaching and support staff for all their work over the year. We have a great team at Loyola and continue to work for the benefit of our students. I would also like to thank the parent community for their ongoing support of their child, and support for the College.

Semester Two Reports Semester Two reports will be mailed out to you soon and you will notice that there are changes in the Report format. One of the changes reflected in the semester report is the implementation of the Victorian Curriculum Foundation – 10 framework. Student achievement standards correspond to the learning areas as set out by the framework. Another difference you will notice is the students in years 8 and 9 will have an Intercultural Capability report included in their semester report. Finally, student semester reports will now have their raw scores instead of letter grades for their School Assessed Coursework. This will give you a better indication of their learning in each subject.

International House & Manresa Cottage Just inside Gate 4, on the corner of Bungay and Kenmare Streets sits our International House which is used for accommodation on a short term basis for both overseas Visitors and members of our College and local community.

Behind the Old Loyola building in the south western corner of the property, sits a quaint little Cottage that we also rent out. These rentals are ideal for family members or friends who have to attend a function or appointment in Melbourne and require an overnight stay or longer at a very reasonable price. Some of our families have extended family who live interstate and rent the cottage on a regular basis when paying a visit to Melbourne for a week or a fortnight. Loyola’s close proximity to shops and the train makes it ideal to be independent and yet close to relatives as well. For more information about these unique short term rental opportunities please refer to the Loyola College

Website. Alternatively, you can contact myself via telephone or email [email protected].
