Dear National Trust Travelers,

In cold December days of yore, Europeans gathered in town squares to buy and sell spices, sweets, and other special items for the holidays. Fresh gingerbread and mulled wine kept them warm, while music and games gladdened their hearts. These were the first Christmas Markets, and centuries later they continue to bring the magic of the season alive.

We invite you on a special holiday cruise aboard the M.S. AmaBella, through the storybook cities and villages of the Danube. Enjoy dramatic architecture and the festive spirit of the historic Christmas Markets of Hungary, Austria, and Germany, each offering distinct customs, foods, and handicrafts.

We are pleased that architectural historian John Meffert will be joining us on this program. A much-loved travel companion, Mr. Meffert has delighted many study tour groups over the years with his lively lectures and insights on preservation.

Begin in Budapest, where an evening highlight will be a special “Illuminations Cruise” along the riverfront. Sample some kürt!skalács—chimney cake—at the Christmas Market, and see the city’s landmarks on a panoramic tour. In Vienna, attend a training session at the Spanish Riding School, and discover Melk’s Benedictine Abbey, whose medieval library inspired The Name of the Rose. Cruise to Passau and explore the cobbled streets of this 2,000-year-old city, or join an optional excursion to enchanting Salzburg.

In Germany, explore Regensburg, with its Old Town Hall and ancient Roman gates. Browse for one-of-a-kind gifts at the Old Kornmarkt Christmas market, or watch craftsmen at work in the “royal” markets. Conclude with an overnight in Nuremberg to marvel at the world’s largest Christmas Market, where the city’s famous gingerbread is just one of many treats on offer.

An optional prelude in Budapest features visits to the House of Hungarian Art Nouveau, the Szechenyi Baths, and the Hungarian State Opera House.

We hope you will join us on this delightful voyage, celebrating a magical holiday tradition.

Sincerely,

Scott Gerloff Director, National Trust Tours
