BELIEvE ALL OGRE AGAIN…

orn on the pages of William Steig’s fairy tale, made famous in the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film, the lovable

ogre Shrek comes to life on stage in Shrek The Musical. Truth be told, Shrek’s road to the musical stage started before his film had been seen. Early in the production pro-cess, Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes felt that the story was a perfect fit for Broadway, and he and DreamWorks’ Jeffrey Katzenberg determined that the first step was to see how the characters came to life on screen.

The movie and its two sequels became one of the most successful film series of all time, while the musical’s creative team turned the modern fairy tale into a Broadway hit. Shrek The Musical garnered eight Tony Award nominations and ranked in the top ten musicals for ticket sales in 2009, embarked on a national tour, and opened a London pro-duction in May of this year.

The show’s second tour, coming to the Fish-er Theatre in February, incorporates some critically-acclaimed adjustments including a new opening, new musical arrangements, and

a new song, “ F o r e v e r , ” sung by the red Dragon. During its run in Costa Mesa, Cali-fornia last month, Shrek The Musical made Micheal L. Quintos of Broadway World laugh for most of the night. In his review he said “this amusing, big-kid-friendly live-action cartoon musical delivers the laughs not with a beguiling snark but, rather with fart battles, cheeky sight gags and a sassy attitude,” adding that it’s “a silly, harmlessly fun show.”

Shrek The Musical plays at the Fisher Theatre Feb. 28–March 11. Tickets are on sale now at the Fisher Theatre box office and online at ticketmaster.com. Groups of twelve or more e-mail [email protected] (subject line Shrek) or call (313) 871-1132.

Grosse Pointe Woods resident Larry Marco is a lifetime theatre fan and a Fisher Theatre subscriber since its opening in 1961. Before the Fisher opened its doors, Mr. Marco spent many evenings as an usher at Detroit’s Cass and Shubert Theatres. “I loved theatre,” he says. “It was a wonderful way to see all of the touring shows that came to Detroit.” While ushering, he made a promise to himself that one day he would have orchestra seats. When it was announced that the Nederlanders would ren-ovate the Fisher Theatre to show Broadway musicals, Larry knew it was an opportunity to fulfill that promise.

Shortly after work began on the Fisher Theatre’s renovations, a friend invited Larry

to meet the owner of the Nederlander orga-nization, Joe Nederlander, in his new Fisher Theatre office. During that meeting, Larry had the opportunity to choose his subscrip-tion seats, four of them in Row D on the main floor. He has had the same four seats ever since.

“My Fisher Theatre subscription has been a wonderful entertainment investment because it has provided me with so many memorable evenings,” stated Mr. Marco. And although there have been a few shows that weren’t his “cup of tea,” he says there are many more that have outweighed them. Some of his favorites include Hello Dolly, Fiddler On The Roof, Movin’ Out, No Strings, Sky-scraper, La Strada, Kiss of the Spider Wom-an and The Girl in the Yellow Dress.

“I know I will continue to be a subscriber because I can look forward to many more years of wonderful theatre! It’s been a great fifty years.”

If you have a Fisher Theatre story you’d like to share, contact Scott Myers, our director of Corporate Sales & Marketing at [email protected].
