“Growing up on a dairy farm with five
siblings instilled a true sense of family and
humor in how I see the world,” Dean says. “Farm
life can be hard so trying to see things from a little
more humorous side can certainly help brighten
any day. Through my designs of mice and other
woodland animals, I reach back to that world where
I grew up, where I first paid attention to wildlife
and began to draw the things I saw.”
In 1989, Dean moved from New York to Florida
to work as a set designer in the state’s growing
television industry. The change in scenery gave his
art a new dimension, and soon he began
creating characters that led directly to the
development of Charming Tails. A chance
meeting at a party led to an exchange of artwork
with a manufacturer of Christmas ornaments.
The resulting twelve designs were an overwhelming
success with retailers and collectors alike, and from
that small beginning, Charming Tails was born.
Since those first designs in 1992, Dean Griff has
produced hundreds of delightful Charming Tails
figurines, ornaments, lighted houses,
water-globes and other giftware items.
Dean and Charming Tails have been honored with
several industry awards in the U.S. and Canada
including the Rising Star Award and several Artist
of the Year Awards. In 1997, amidst overwhelming
popularity among collectors and fans, The Leaf
& Acorn Club was founded and became an
immediate success. Today club members across
the country have local chapters that meet to
share their passion for collecting Charming Tails.
In 2011 Dean and Enesco launched Charming
Purrsonalities, a collection of fun, playful, active kit-
tens who’ll win your heart in one pounce. In Fall of
2011 In The Flower Garden was launched – a beauti-
ful line of blossoming flowers each touched with a
sparkling dew drop. Sculpted in fine matte porcelain
bisque, each flower has an animal companion.
