Christmas in July – Christmas Tree Mug Rug www.homesewnbyus.com 7/23/2018 We hope you enjoy this free Christmas Tree Mug Rug pattern. It was designed by us and distributed during the Christmas In July blog hop hosted by Carol at Just Let Me Quilt. Ingredients for 6” x 10” mug rug: § 8 – 2.5” squares in red fabrics § 7 – 2.5” squares in white/low volume fabrics § 1 – Green and brown scraps for the tree and trunk appliqué (template on last page) § Backing and batting – approximately 7” x 11” § Fabric for binding – all one color or multiple fabrics 1. From your red fabric cut 2.5” squares. We used all the same fabric, but you could also make it scrappy. 2. Cut 2.5” squares from your white/low volume fabric. 3. Layout the 15 squares in a checkerboard pattern, alternating red and white in 3 rows of 5 squares. 4. Sew the 5 squares in each row together. Press each row in alternating directions so that the squares will nest; or press the seams open. Sew the 3 rows together and press again. This should measure approximately 6” x 10”. 5. Use the tree template provided on the next page and trace the on the back/reverse side of the green and brown fabric. Cut out on the drawn line. The template measures approximately 5” x 4.32”. 6. Layer the quilt top right side up, batting and backing right side down. Use a few pins to secure or basting spray if you prefer. 7. Center the tree and trunk, then appliqué around each piece through all three layers. 8. Quilt as desired. We echo-quilted around the tree and added a few buttons as decoration. We also had a blue star-shaped button that was sewn at the top of the tree. 9. Finally, trim and square the quilted top. Add your binding, sew down by machine or hand and then enjoy! 10. We hope you enjoy this free Christmas Tree Mug Rug pattern. It was designed by us and distributed during the Christmas In July blog hop hosted by Carol at Just Let Me Quilt. Ingredients for 6” x 10” mug rug: § 8 – 2.5” squares in red fabrics § 7 – 2.5” squares in white/low volume fabrics § 1 – Green and brown scraps for the tree and trunk
