KLB Tower is a modular mid-rise
residential development for South Lake
Union. Focusing on the site composition,
unit flexibility, and the assembly of the
modules, KLB Tower becomes a sensitive
and pragmatic structure, while redefining
conceptions of what it means to be
modular.
On the site, the building holds the
intersection corner, and rises up for
maximum southern exposure. The units
are designed to be arranged in different
horizontal and vertical configurations
of Kitchen, Living, and Bedroom
modules, reflected in the irregular exterior
composition of balconies.
This project was the coordinated effort
of a group of six people from Architecture,
Construction Management, and Urban
Planning, and there is much more to see at
this page: (be patient; it’s big!)

The modules are categorized as Kitchen, Living, and Bed modules. Apartments range from KBs to the KLBBs, providing a range of scales of living.

SOUTH SITE PLANS AT 1/40th INCH EQUALS ONE FOOT
NORTH SITE PLANS AT 1/40th INCH EQUALS ONE FOOT Splitting the Program between two sites, the Crew Project can be used to rehabili-tate two struggling sites on the lake, im-proving them both for the park user. At the Southern site, the crowded and un-welcoming establishment is opened to create a resting area with bustling café. At the Northern site, the sparsely used peninsula becomes another such resting area, as the structure draws people off of the path.
Elevating the park users and Banquet Room patrons, the roof of the storage becomes an extension of the park. De-velopment on the lake, while necessary, is still able to emphasize the value of the connection to the outdoors.
The material treatment of the building, transparent brick screens and glass ve-neers, engages the crew member and the park user. At a distance, the visitor may only get the impression of transpar-ency from the escaping light through the brick, but as they approach, the visitors is able see and understand the specifics of the Crew Team, and realize his or her own role as a patron of park recreation.
A new facility for the Green Lake rowing
program must be sensitive to the existing
park. The park is a public amenity, used
year round by the local population. Any
new structure must be careful to balance
its function with public appeal and uses.
This building engages one of the steeper
hillsides on the shore to establish two
datums in section: at the lake level, the
crew program takes over in the form of the
boat storage, exercise room, locker room,
and administrative office overlooking the
lake. At the second datum, the grassy park
is drawn out onto the boat storage as an
outlook, while above the exercise room, a
public event pavilion provides a new kind
of amenity to the park.
The shell house becomes a new public
destination point on the three-mile circuit of
the lake, and increases awareness of the
crew program that the lake supports.

Robot Treehouse is a digital fabrication
studio that explored and attempted to
capture the playful imagination of children,
while expanding the vocabulary of what a
treehouse might be.
More playground than enclosure, this
treehouse was born out of two observed
qualities from a brainstorm and charette
with children. We were struck by their
enthusiasm and the need for social
connections - when asked what a robot
treehouse is, many of the children turned
to technology like Skype to describe how
they would interact with their friends.
We simplified the technological aspect
of this study to consider more primal
forms of communication, such as the
conch. The Robot Treehouse is envisioned
as an amplifier and a visual cue to the
activity above, suggesting hide-and-seek,
movements, and postures.

The user group provided valuable insight into cultural attitudes about treehouses: no girls allowed!

Digital fabrication tools allow us to fabricate and install the treehouse in two weeks, using jigs to keep tolerances tight.
Chris Tritt 17
The connection details and modular aspects of the design allow it to be reinstalled in a different location with minimal damage to the trees.
