Sandhill CoveFebruary 2020

May I introduce my neighborand good friend, LaVaughn Tilton, this

month's “SPOTLIGHTER." Manyof you already know her. You knowthat she is sweet and friendly andunassuming. Yet, LaVaughn is amover and shaker, a woman whohas done tremendous good. Pleasemeet the founder of Hibiscus Children's Center.LaVaughn originally comes from Vienna, Missouri. Herfamily had a farm and she was raised on fresh food that theygrew. Her first job was secretary at the local draft board. Her husband, working for Grumman aircraft, hated the coldso the family moved to Florida in 1962. She knew all aboutthe Mathesons and witnessed the development of this areaand of Sandhill Cove. Here, also, she saw the way to fulfillher dreams of finding a safe place for children and, thus, theHibiscus Shelter was born. I say, "Tell me about the Hibis-cus Shelter" and her face lights up. For the next hour or soshe tells me, all the while handing me more and more liter-ature. Wow, I think, when am I going to have time to readit all? But I am hooked. Not only do I read about it, I alsoGoogle it.The operation is funded, in part, by the Florida State Dept.for Children and Families, plus private supporters. To thisday, she remains President Emeritus of Hibiscus Shelter. The children's psychological and physical needs are prior-ity. Therapists work with the kids, who also receive medicaland dental care and of course must go to school, as man-dated. Yes, it takes a village .... And the fundraising contin-ues. It is hard to believe, but human trafficking is going onright under our noses, right here, right now, in our peacefullittle community, in Martin County! Hibiscus is certainlymaking a dent, she says, but it's only a small dent. Manymore centers are needed, and not only in Florida. Also, oneof the immediate needs, she tells me, is vans for transporta-tion. And always more land for new Centers, where newactivities will constantly be introduced, as now. Sports areoffered, dancing, you name it. There are many, many suc-cess stories, a few failures and very little support from ourGovernments, she says. To which I add: that is our job, thegeneral public's job. Because it takes a village!LaVaughn tells of the times when she would hear aboutchildren living with abusive parents. “These children needsome help” LaVaughn told her husband. She could notstand doing nothing so she did something. She had an ideafor a children’s shelter. Funding for such services as this isalways an issue. At first the original shelter was funded bydonations and was built on 1.5 acres by the Tilton &Kiplinger families in connection with the Jensen BeachCommunity Church. A local builder, Mosley and Sons ofStuart, offered to build the first building of this facility. In1989, the Hibiscus Tilton/Kiplinger Shelter opening inJensen Beach as a place for abused children. “The missionof Hibiscus Children’s Center is to maintain a safe shelter

for children who are abused, abandoned and neglected byproviding prevention, early intervention, and advocacy in aquality residential, assessment and recovery program”. Itwas then that the Florida State Department for Children andFamilies stepped in to help fund Hibiscus Shelter. At firstthere were 6 boys and 6 girls but in a short time the need ex-ploded to 36 children resulting in full capacity. That prob-lem was solved on May 16, 2004 with the opening of“Village” in Vero Beach. It consists of eight homes with aCenter Building for offices and special events and houses13 to 18 year olds. These youngsters are guided to be in-dependent citizens. There is a third shelter in St. LucieCounty for infants and toddlers. It gives LaVaughnGREAT PLEASURE to talk about Hibiscus and provideliterature to anyone who is interested.Once a year, the Kane Center, through the Council of Agingin Stuart, Florida and Martin County, gives the SAGEAward “honoring the wisdom and worth of our seniors”.Throughout the years, SAGEAward recipients given muchof their lives to making life better for many residents ofMartin County. This year, our very own LaVaughn Tiltonhas been nominated for this award.PS: If you want to learn more about Tilton's passion, askher. She will give you an armload of literature! Or you cango online.Interviewed and Written by Olga Drucker & Ann Coffin

Russian Duo of Oleg Kruglyakov and Terry Bo-yarsky will be performing in the Sandhill Club-house lounge on Sunday, February 16 from 4:00

p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

SUNDAY CONCERT

Russian Duo is an international project, born out of a loveof traditional music and classical elegance. Oleg is a bal-alaika virtuoso from Siberia and Terry is an Americanconcert pianist. They celebrate cross-cultural creativity, exploring the range of possibilities for balalaika, voice, and piano. Audiences are taken on a journey across thespan of Russian culture—from humorous pieces, virtu-oso variations, pulsating dance music, rhythmic folksongs, and lyrical romances. In addition to classical musicRussian Duo performs other genres including tango, bluegrass, Soviet film music, and their own arrangements ofragtime.Since the inception of Russian Duo, in 2007, Oleg and

Terry have performed from Canada to Florida, fromMin-nesota to Texas, and from Massachusetts to Oregon. In2017, they performed in Kirov, Russia.Russian Duo was selected to showcase at the ChamberMusic America National Conference in NYC, January2011. They have also showcased for Ohio Arts Profes-sionals Network and Pennsylvania Presenters. RussianDuo has been on the Ohio Arts Council "Ohio Artists onTour" roster since 2008.The Vermont Journal writes, "The audience was en-thralled as the music slid from exuberance of joy andanger to whispers of love and crying so faint you couldhave heard a pin drop. 'Beautiful,' 'Incredible,' 'Wow,' and'He is making the balalaika cry,' were heard as the audi-ence listened intently."WKSU host and Cuyahoga River Concerts presenter MattWatroba says, "We loved the way the Russian Duo com-bined historical information with world-class playing andperformance. Our audience was mesmerized! They didn’twant them to leave the stage. The duo provided an excel-lent retrospective of the music from both the folk and clas-sical traditions. Professional and crowd pleasing...it wasa great success.""For a folk musician to be able to achieve the precision ofa classically trained musician is rare, as rare as it is for aclassically trained musician to deliver the freedom andspontaneity of a folk musician." Robert Spano, Music Di-rector, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra had to say.
