The beautiful little girl, who suffers from retinoblastoma, wished to have a Disney Adventure. On Friday, Sept. 11, Karli, 4, was surprised by friends and family with the news before kickoff of the Mt. Juliet High School football game. This is a special place for Karli as she was recently named an honorary Mt. Juliet High cheerleader. Mickey and Minnie Mouse and Ariel, who is Karli’s favorite Disney princess, greeted Karli on the fi eld to announce the news

that she and her family will be receiving her spending money and trip itinerary as well. After the announcement there, Karli and her new friends from Disney had refreshments in a tent at the south end zone to celebrate her wish coming true. Then Karli returned to the fi eld and took her spot as the “little Bear cheerleader.”The family found out about the wish being granted in May and will go on their trip during Fall Break in October. “The sweetest part was the girl who was Ariel,” said Karli’s mom Amy. “Her name is Miranda Miller and she’s from Sweetwater, Tenn. She met Karli at a benefi t and Karli thought she really was Ariel.”

Her name was put in headlines last year when she and her husband celebrated a winning lottery ticket valued at $800,000. And again this year her name is back in the headlines but for a much different reason. Tamatha (Tammy) Byrum, of Mt. Juliet, has been charged by the Tennessee Bureau of I n v e s t i g a t i o n with embezzling some $550,000 from a Lebanon b u s i n e s s m a n while she served as an accountant and offi cer in the business he owned. She was arrested by local authorities last week. According to Steve Guynn, who now owns Sherlock’s Book Emporium, Byrum “stole” some $500,000 from a software computer business he started in 1981 and owned up until 2006. Guynn said Byrum

worked for him for about 12 years starting out as a receptionist, then as an accountant and eventually became president of the company. He said the investigation by the TBI has

been ongoing for almost three years. TBI began its investigation in February on a request from the District Attorney’s offi ce, said Kristen

Helm, public information offi cer. Byrum was arrested on Wednesday, September 16, by Special Agent Chet Mason with the TBI and booked into the Wilson County Jail.

Byrum was charged with three counts of theft over $60,000, one count of theft over $10,000, seven counts of forgery and seven counts of passing a forged instrument. She was r e l e a s e d from custody after posting a bond of $15,000. She is to appear in court on T h u r s d a y , Nov. 19. Byrum and her husband, Michael, who

has not been charged in the investigation, were featured in the media last year as being the lucky winners of a Tennessee lottery ticket worth $800,000.

Wilson County

Commission re-elected each of their different committee members at its regular meeting on Monday night after honoring the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue team. District 17 Commissioner Gary Keith, who is also a captain in the Sheriff’s Department, sponsored a resolution to honor the Search and Rescue team and specifi cally Dr. Melissa Riley and her dog, Maggie. Riley and Maggie were awarded the County Sheriff’s Department’s Medal of Merit for achieving a statewide disaster certifi cation as well as assisting in several recent local disasters. In other business, the commission also accepted the formal resignation of District 7 Commissioner Don Franklin, who has been ill after suffering a stroke. His wife, Georgia, will likely take over his seat for the remainder of his term at the Oct. 19 regular meeting. The commission unanimously passed two resolutions to approve amendments to the budget. One was an additional $100,000 appropriation for the Trustee and the other was the approval of the School General Fund Budget

amendment. Then the meeting became mysterious as District 20 Commissioner Annette Stafford called to suspend the rules to allow a “young man” to speak to the commission. When the man, who was not named because he feared retaliation, entered, County Attorney Mike Jennings told Stafford that this was not a good idea. “You’re going down a slippery slope,” Jennings said. “We are not a judicial body. You are setting yourselves up to be witnesses in a lawsuit.” Stafford said that the man called her after trying to speak with the County Mayor, District Attorney, as well as other commissioners, and just wanted to be heard. She said that he had “the right to speak to us as a body.” District 23 Commissioner Bernie Ash moved to go back into session, thereby refusing the man the opportunity to speak, and the motion carried. The meeting then carried on as usual with the confi rmation of committee members. The commission re-elected each and every member.

National experts have said recently that the recession may be “over,” and the tides of our economic troubles may be turning, but times are still pretty

tough around the country and many areas are seeing stagnant growth and a rash of businesses closing, huge companies folding, and dust settling on construction that has ground to a halt. According to local offi cials, that’s not the case in Mt. Juliet. Many businesses have opened in the area recently, including Lowe’s, Sally’s Beauty, and Dollar Tree at Paddocks, Rue 21 and Cori’s Doghouse (opened offi cially on Tuesday, September 22) at Providence, a new Mapco South, Bicyclette in Coolview Commons, and O’Reilly Auto Parts on Lebanon Road. And Wal-Mart is set to open at Paddocks on October 28, as well as another Subway in that development. But some of the most exciting businesses are either actively looking to locate in Mt. Juliet or have signed letters of intent and are gearing up to build here, according to City of Mt. Juliet Director of Economic Development Kenny Martin. Martin said that while “rubbing elbows” with some major developers and economic leaders at functions in Nashville and at regional events that the buzz is that “one of the few places anything is happening is in Mt. Juliet.” “Each new business that opens here opens an opportunity for another business, and people want to be in Mt. Juliet,” Martin said. “We’re no longer a sleepy little suburb of Nashville, but we still have that feel – we still have that small town feel, and that’s because of the people here, not necessarily the businesses. It’s about the big and small businesses – especially the entrepreneurs, the Mom and Pop businesses that spur opportunities on.” Martin said that some businesses who are “actively looking” to locate in Mt. Juliet include: a second Sonic, International House of Pancakes, Shoney’s

(looking at Paddocks and Providence Commons), Hallmark Cards (looking at Providence Commons), Game Stop (Paddocks), Bar-B Cutie (Paddocks and other areas, in search of an available lot), Jim and Nicks’s BBQ (Providence

area), and Ascend Credit Union (Paddocks). Businesses that have signed a letter of intent include: a third McDonald’s in the Providence area, Firehouse Subs (Providence, in lease negotiations), Eyemasters (Paddocks outparcel) and Valvoline Oil (Paddocks). Martin noted that the following businesses should all be open within the next six months, some sooner depending on construction and weather conditions: UPS Store (Providnce, opening any time, lease has been signed), El Camal Mexican Restaurant (Mt. Juliet Village – new Publix shopping center at intersection of Lebanon and Mt. Juliet Road – in four to six weeks), Famous Jose’s (Coolview Commons, opening in next few weeks), Fat Moe’s (Coolview Commons, should open in four to six weeks, or sooner), US Bank (Paddocks, lease signed, four months), Cheddar’s (Paddocks, speculative opening date of March 1), Buffalo Wild Wings (Adams Lane, under construction, could open in three months), a second Publix (Providence Commons, four months), Mt. Juliet Dentistry (Providence Commons, four months). Martin said a new veterinary clinic is also set to open on Providence Parkway soon, just east of Two Rivers Ford at Providence. Many people and families are clamoring for a wholesale club store along the lines of Costco or Sam’s Club, but Martin said that at this time Mt. Juliet “isn’t big enough yet” statistically, but that Sam’s Club could located in the Bel Air at Beckwith area once that development is closer to coming online. He added that other businesses that have expressed an interest in locating in Mt. Juliet include an indoor fi ring range, a bowling alley, and a 24-hour fi tness center. “The phone is ringing off the hook here – the buzz

in Nashville is that we’re next in line for a business boom,” Martin said Monday. “And we’re trying to keep as much of it local as we can – we’re trying harder and harder to get local contractors to do these build outs, we’re leading the developers to our

own local base of workers. We want all the work and business to stay here, for our people and the people of Wilson County.”

What’s new, who’s looking in MJ

Garr’s Rental & Feed will present its popular Scarecrow Workshops on three consecutive Saturdays this fall announced Roy Garr, co-owner and president. During the 90 minute workshops, families can build their own life-size scarecrows, straw-fi lled creations suitable for use as an outdoor autumn or Halloween decoration. “The workshops are so popular that we are presenting them on t h r e e Saturdays. There will be three s e s s i o n s on each Saturday. T h i s s c h e d u l e provides nine opportunities for families to join the fun,” said Garr. Families can only participate in one workshop; one adult must accompany every three children in a family. The 2009 Scarecrow Workshops are scheduled for:

Saturday, Sept 26, at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Saturday, Oct 3, at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Saturday, Oct 10, at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Space is limited; advanced reservations are required. The workshop fee is $15.00 which includes materials to build and decorate the scarecrow. A portion of the fee will benefi t Charis Health Center of Mt. Juliet, a nonprofi t clinic, staffed by volunteer physicians, nurses and others, that provides health care at a reduced rate to the working uninsured in

Wilson County. Families must provide clothing for their scarecrow: a long-sleeve button-up shirt and one pair of pants (overalls are preferred). Garr’s Rental and Feed will provide the instruction, all scarecrow accessories including a straw hat, the frame and stuffi ng. Additional items -- such as pumpkins, corn stalks, mums and straw bales -- will be available for

p u r c h a s e . W h e n making a reservation, a family must select the size of its s ca rec row (child size or fully grown) and select a standing or seated

scarecrow. Reservations will be accepted beginning September 5; call 754-2777. “The workshops fi ll up every year, so we encourage families to make reservations early so that they won’t be disappointed,” noted Garr. He noted that “do-it-yourself” scarecrow kits will be available for $19.95 for families unable to attend the workshops or for participants wanting to make more than one scarecrow. This year, Garr’s will also have a professional photographer at the workshops to take photos of families with their scarecrows. Cost for a 5x7 photo is $10.00. Families are welcome to bring their own cameras. Garr’s Rental and Feed, a family-owned business, is located at 11620 Lebanon Road and is open Monday through Saturday

from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed on Sunday.

Achievement A public meeting has been set to discuss construction of a new bridge over the Cumberland River at the Wilson-Sumner County line on Highway 109. The meeting will be from 5 until 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 8 in the dining room at Gallatin City Hall, 132 West Main Street, Gallatin. Offi cials with the Tennessee Department of Transportation will be on hand to discuss the project. There will be a short presentation followed by a question-and-answer session. The public is invited to attend, ask questions and make comments. The public

may also review the plans during the meeting. As proposed, the project would widen Hwy. 109 for a distance of about 1.05 miles and replace the bridge over the Cumberland River. The project also proposes to replace a concrete box culvert located along the route north of the river with a single span bridge. A notice announcing the public meeting said “SR (State Route) 109 will consist of four 12 (foot) traffi c lanes, one 12 (foot) center turn lane, and 10 (foot) shoulders with curb and gutter and sidewalks with a 104 (foot) right-of-way. Widening along the route will begin approximately 1,000 (feet)

south of the bridge over the Cumberland River and end approximately 800 (feet) north of Odom’s Bend Road.” TDOT offi cials have agreed to use a “Context Sensitive Solutions” design approach to the new bridge making it a “Gateway Bridge” for motorists heading north to Gallatin and Sumner County and those heading south into Wilson County. The new bridge and widening project would be funded through the Tennessee Transportation Infrastructure Improvement Bond Program of 2009. Nicely said money for the work should be included in TDOT’s funding for fi scal year 2010-2011.

“Miranda just fell in love with Karli and had been following her site,” she added. “Last week, they couldn’t fi nd anyone in the area to dress up as Ariel and Miranda volunteered to drive down for the night and do this for Karli. It was so sweet.”In August 2008, Karli, of Old Hickory, was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, malignant tumor of the retina. “Karli has always been known by everyone for having the biggest most beautiful blue eyes,” said Patricia Ledford, director of Communications and Development for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Middle Tennessee. “It was very ironic that she was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease in those very same eyes.” The Costley’s decided to treat Karli with a new clinical treatment at New York’s Sloan-

Kettering Cancer Center. The procedure was to infuse chemotherapy directly into Karli’s eye to try and avoid removing it completely. So far the treatments have been effective in saving her eyes; however, the process is still ongoing. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Started in 1980 when a group of caring individuals helped a young boy fulfi ll his dream of becoming a police offi cer, the Foundation is now the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 67 chapters in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donors and nearly 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a wish every 40 minutes and has granted more than 161,000 wishes in the U.S. since inception.

From staff reports HENDERSONVILLE -- Living on the edge has become a way of life for the Mt. Juliet football team. Coach Roger Perry’s Golden Bears survived a rain-soaked back and forth game to defeat host Hendersonville 44-37 in double overtime Friday, Sept. 18. “These close games are killing me,” Perry said as his team improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in District 9AAA. All told, Mt. Juliet has won four games by an average of 4.5 points per contest. “Hendersonville was big and physical -- outstanding in their technique and execution. We were very fortunate to get out of there

with a win.” The Commandos piled up some 498 yards in total offense against the Bears as three Hendersonville backs each broke the 100-yard rushing mark. “As poorly as we played on defense all night, our kids really rose to the occasion in that last overtime,” Perry said. Clinging to a 44-37 lead after Reed Gurchiek’s 10-yard scoring run on fi rst down, Mt. Juliet smacked Hendersonville in the mouth on three consecutive plays -- forcing a game-ending fumble on third down. Chris Brazile led the Bears with 136 yards on nine attempts and scored a second quarter touchdown.

Gurchiek added three TDs -- two in the overtime periods -- and rushed for 58 yards on nine carries. Mt. Juliet will host 0-4 Kenwood High Friday night in the Bear homecoming

A staple of Mt. Juliet’s mom and pop businesses has benefi ted from the recent downturn in the economy when it was featured in the bargain section of a regional periodical, leading to a spot on a local television program – Talk of the Town. C l a i r e n n e ’ s Treasures, located at 11907 Lebanon Road, was featured in an August write up in a regional newspaper for places to shop in Wilson County. This exposure led to a spot on Talk of the Town, with several of the show’s celebrities popping into the eclectic shop for a tour and showcase of her wares. “It was so nice,” admitted Clairenne Hale, who has owned the antiques and treasures shop for the past eight years at its Lebanon Road location. “If someone would have told me that my shop would look that good before it came out, I just wouldn’t believe them.” She winked. “But then again, it may be all about the cameraman.” But many local, regional, and distant visitors to Clairenne’s might disagree with that: she’s had many

people from as far away as Paris and Manchester, Tennessee see the Talk of the Town episode and stop in for a visit based on what they saw. She said that with the economy the way it is, many people are looking for a bargain in anything they buy – which is great for her shop, since it offers such a variety of objects ranging from antique dolls and china sets to handmade and hand-painted custom furniture. “You most likely won’t get rich in this business,” Clairenne admitted, looking around at the crowded mix of brick-a-brack, antiques, home décor, furniture and linens arranged tastefully in the open space, which one can’t see the back wall from the front door. “It’s more work than most people want to do, and I’m working, shopping, or painting even on my days off, but I love it.

Lord help me, I love it.” Clairenne remarked how she has worked her “whole life,” even while raising fi ve children. At one point she was the single mother of three small children working two jobs, and she envisioned the time – at the age she is now – when she could retire, relax, spend time with her children and watch her grandchildren grow. “But now I’m working harder than I ever have,” she mused with a smile. “And I enjoy it all.” C l a i r e n n e ’ s Treasures is located at 11907 Lebanon Road in Mt. Juliet, has an ever-changing inventory of one-of-a-kind and collectible items, and runs frequent sales and specials. Currently everything in the store is 25% off. Call 615-758-7272 for more details.

The September 17 meeting of the Mt. Juliet planning commission began with a warm welcome to the new City Planner, Steve Foote. Foote hails from Gulf Shores, where he was the Director of Development for 14 years. Moving along in development of Paddocks Place and another eatery to add to the Mt. Juliet skyline, the review for the Site Plan for the restaurant Cheddars, located on Old Pleasant Grove Road, was approved with conditions. There were a number of additional comments for the Site Plan, which were all addressed prior to approval. It was unanimously approved. The DeCoursey Property Zoning was added to staff reports. Sheila DeCoursey was granted Commercial Zoning in 1990 for her property located at 1049 Lebanon Road (across from Minchey’s). Whenever the original documents were recovered from the City Records, they were not written in a way that they would be today. City Attorney Jason Holleman interpreted it as though she did have Commercial Zoning, and stated that changes needed to be made to the map accordingly. Planning Commission Board Chair Jay Cameli motioned in support of the amendment, referring to it as “house-keeping,” Mt. Juliet Mayor Linda Elam seconded the motion, and the zoning was unanimously approved. The review for the Site Plan Development Drawings for the US Bank, located on Old Pleasant Grove Road, was originally approved on July 17,

2008, and has expired. Drawings were submitted and additional comments were listed to be discussed before re-approval. Colleen Zonarich went before the Planning Commission to request a Subdivision Variance for her family’s residential property, located at 508 Garden Drive (Providence Phase J Section 2). Zonarich stated that the current condition of their property is a safety issue and is especially concerned with the wellbeing of their two young children. She also said they are unable to safely maintain or access a usable portion of their property, and that a retaining wall would be the best solution for this. C o m m i s s i o n e r s were primarily concerned with the retaining wall encroaching into an existing ‘Conservation Easement’ area located at the rear of the property. The easement is required due to a present spring that surfaces in the area. The Zonarichs have been working closely with the Storm Water offi ce and were able to come up with two viable options for the retaining wall. After much discussion on the topic, the Commission unanimously approved option 2 (with conditions), which had little encroachment and protected existing trees. The conditions are that the Zonarichs will have to continue to work closely with Storm Water offi ce, and further steps will have to be taken with the site and grading plan as the project moves forward. A buffer variance request for Providence Commons, located at South Mt. Juliet Road, was requested to allow work to be conducted under approved permits in the area. There

were a number of sinkholes discovered during site grading, making further variances necessary in order for remediation of sinkholes and existing streams. Larry Searcy made motion to approve the variances, Cameli seconded, all else approved except Elam, who opposed. Attorney Yancy Belcher withdrew the application for the sign variance request to remove the Main Street District Overlay, located at 2306 N. Mt. Juliet Road. A Preliminary Master Development Plan, for Ellenwood Farms, located at South Rutland Road, for the review of the Plan of Services, and Annexation was deferred until further notice. The Preliminary Plat review for Paddocks Phase 2b, containing 4 lots on 5.63 acres, located on North Mt. Juliet Road, was approved with conditions, and it was unanimously approved. The review for the Final Plat for the Ken Stilts Property, containing 2 lots on 9.66 acres, located on Clemmons Road, was unanimously approved with conditions. The review for the plan of services, annexation, and preliminary master development plan for Ellenwood Farms, located on South Rutland Road, was

deferred. For a complete detailed list of the consent agenda, minutes, and a schedule of all upcoming meetings of the Planning

Commission, please visit www.c i tyo fmt ju l i e t .o rg or contact the Planning Secretary Jennifer Hamblen at 773-6237 or [email protected].

Look Who Has, Is, or Might Be Coming To Town I wanted to give everyone an update on who has, is, or might be coming to town soon. With the economy showing some slight signs of improvement Mt. Juliet is really starting to see lots of activity. As a matter of fact, Mt. Juliet is the word on the streets in Nashville and surrounding communities when it comes to prospering communities and placed to live, shop, work and play. While other economies have been struggling, Mt. Juliet’s continues to thrive. I personally believe that is a direct result of our wonderful business community, fabulous residents and the fact that we are Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. Need I say more? Ok, enough about us and how great we are. But we really are great. In all seriousness, things are really looking up and going extremely well. For example, just look at the new business that have either opened recently, will open soon, are in the planning process or are looking to possibly locate here: Lowe’s Open Paddocks, Wal-Mart Opening 10-28-09, Subway #2 Opening soon Paddocks, Sonic#2, UPS Store Coming Soon Providence, El Camal Mexican Restaurant Mt. Juliet Village, Shoney’s Looking, Sally Beauty Open Paddocks, McDonalds #2, New Mapco South Open, Bicyclette Open Coolview CommonsFamous Jose’s Opening soon Coolview Commons, Fat Moe’s Opening soon Coolview Commons, US Bank Coming soon Paddocks, Hallmark Cards Looking, Cheddar’s awaiting planning approval Paddocks, Dollar Tree Open Paddocks, Lein Nail Salon Opening Soon, O’Reilly Auto Parts Open Lebanon Road, Cori’s Doghouse Opening Soon Providence, Buffalo Wild Wings Under Construction Adams Lane, Publix #2 Providence Commons, Mt. Juliet Dentistry Coming Soon, Game Stop Looking, Bar-B Cutie Looking, Jim and Nicks Looking, Eyemasters Looking, Valvoline Oil Looking, Ascend Credit Union Coming Soon, Rue 21 Now Open Providence. I’ll stop with these, but there are many more either now open, coming soon or looking. With all the current and future businesses there is an even greater reason and need for supporting your local businesses by shopping and supporting Mt. Juliet First. I know I ask this on a regular basis but it is very, very important to our local economy and future infrastructure needs. In closing, thanks for making Mt. Juliet one of the most successful cities in Tennessee.
