Sandhill CoveJune 2018

Both Frank and Grace Nola think theother one has the more interesting life towrite about but I found two very interest-ing people in Waterside. My interviewstarted with Grace who told me that Ishould forget about doing her but to writeabout Frank, but I disagree. Grace grew up in Miami Florida, yes, atrue Floridian!! She attended NotreDame Academy High School in Miami.Frank became “the boy next door” when she moved into hisneighborhood. She attended Barry College in Miami, theUniversity of Alabama and then Athens College in Athens Al-abama where she got her BS in Business Administration. Shedated Frank for a year then became engaged for another yearbefore marrying in 1987 at St Rose of Lima Church in MiamiShores FL. She was a stay-at-home mom raising three chil-dren: Linda, a retired teacher now living in Plant City FLamong the strawberry fields, Charlie, a NASA InternationalSpace Station engineer in Huntsville AL, and Frank,Jr. a prin-cipal in his architectural firm in Huntsville. But she did notjust “stay at home”. She was a member of the MadisonCounty Extension Service, the American Association of Uni-versity Women and the Ikebana International Society, spe-cializing in the art of Japanese flower arranging.Grace is a master gardener with a specialty in chrysanthe-mums, growing the huge “football mums” in her greenhouse. She was a judge for the National Chrysanthemum Society aswell. In 1983 she entered the Nichols Research Corporationas program analyst in Huntsville, Alabama and worked therefor 12 years. Her hobby is genealogy and Grace has found two descendantswho were responsible for the hanging of witches in HartfordCN but they also were founding members of Dorchester, atown in Massachusetts. She is active in PEO, DAR and otherhereditary societies.Frank, a native Miamian attended Tech High later to becomeLindsey Hopkins Vocational High School. As a Tech high stu-dent, he played football in the Orange Bowl Stadium playingright tackle. After high school he ran his dad’s grocery storebefore entering the Army for two years during the period of theKorean War. With the GI bill he received his Electrical Engi-neering degree from the University of Miami. His first jobwas with Martin Aircraft in Orlando for one year then toNASA’s Guidance and Control Center in Huntsville throughretirement in 1994. He worked on the Saturn manned moonrocket, the Lunar Rover vehicle and Skylab, the countries’first space station. Frank was on the cover of Alabama TodayMagazine for his 23 inventions and patents, some for reduc-ing the power wasted by electric motors. Electric motors areresponsible for 2/3 of all the electric energy generated in theUS. The potential for savings was significant and resulted ininternational recognition. In 1979 he was given the Con-gressional Excalibur Award and in 1982 he was NASA “In-ventor of the Year”. In 1984 he was awarded the DistinguishedEngineering Alumni Award from the University of Miami. He

spoke before the UN General Assembly in 1986 on the “Peace-ful Missions in Outer Space”.When they retired, he and Grace always thought they would re-turn to Miami but stopped in Stuart and fell in love with it here. They purchased a condo on the Intracoastal Waterway in Han-son’s Landing, and lived there for 25 winters with plenty oftime for fishing. Frank was known as “the fish whisperer”. The Nola’s found their way to Sandhill Cove when they sawthat they could still be on the water and Frank could pursue hishobby of fishing and he is often seen fishing from the dock atSandhill Cove. When not on the dock, Frank can be found atthe round table in the clubhouse solving the world problems!!They attend St. Christopher’s Church in Hobe Sound. Theyboth are very happy to be part of the Sandhill Cove community.
