THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

In our last exciting episode on THE MASS, I wrote about those two groups who leave the congregation, the children before the Liturgy of the Word and the catechumens after the homily. Following the homily, those of us who remain recite the Nicene Creed. It’s the “I believe” or in Latin, “credo” (cray-doe) part of the Mass. It is the time when we all profess our faith; the what we believe. We do this just so that we don’t lose sight of what it is that is important.
The formula that we use stems from two famous church councils; the Councils of Nicea in 325 and Chal-cedon in 451. The creed is rather scientific in its language. It does not make for a good prayer, for nature of prayer should be more poetic than scientific theology.
Have you ever thought, really considered, what it is that you be-lieve and should not be taken away? Do it as an exercise in your own theology of creed. Your honest reflection might lead you to something like this: I believe that Jesus is the Divine Son of God who is a trinity of persons. Jesus shared a meal with his disciples in which he identified bread and wine with himself. He told us to continue this meal as a ritual in memory of him. This Eucharist is food that identifies us with Jesus because it is Jesus himself and it gives us strength to be his presence of love in a world that would not know him if it weren’t for us. After Jesus ate this meal with his disciples, he suffered and died for sinners. Jesus who suffered and died for sinners also rose from the dead, giving eternal life to those whom he loves.
I find it helpful to sum up for myself what I believe in language and terms that I understand. Perhaps you might want to do the same. After hearing the Scriptures and a reflection on them, and sharing the Table of the Eucharist, and living the Tradition of our faith long enough; just what do you believe to be essential, non-negotiable, when it comes to the elements of the Faith and your faith today?
Let’s consider one more element of the Mass, the Prayer of the Faithful or the General Intercessions. These petitions are made to God the Father and to them we all respond: “Lord, hear our prayer.” As with the creed, the danger with any automatic re-sponse or automatically spoken prayer is that we tend to forget the deeper meaning of our gesture and word.
It is called the Prayer of the Faithful because this prayer is said only by those who are baptized; they belong to the Order of the Faithful. Those who have not yet been baptized, the catechu-mens were sent from the congregation.
In these intercessions we normally pray for the needs of the Church Universal, for public authorities, for the salvation of the whole world, for those who are burdened by the difficulties of life, and for the local community. That’s pretty universal!
While the rest of the prayers of the Mass are set in the official book, the Roman Missal, these general prayers are not so pre-scribed. We are expected to make these prayers our own.
When I was a novice in England, we friars shared our chapel
with cloistered Servite Sisters. They had a “general intercession” which they prayed daily: “Lord, save us from fire.” I thought; “this must refer to the Great Fire of London.” One day I asked them if it did. They responded: “Yes, it does.” I countered with: “The Great Fire of London was in 1666. They continued: “Since we have been praying, London has not had another Great Fire!” Yes, the power of praying for your cares each day!
Before you come to Mass, prepare prayers for those who need prayer. “Lift up in prayer” those people and needs for whom you wish to pray.
Thanksgiving Day is November 27. Please plan on including Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9:00AM as part of your day.
Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of Rome. This is not St. Peter's, but it is the Pope's ca-thedral. Also called the Church of Holy Savior or the Church of St. John Baptist, it was the baptism church of ancient Rome. It was built in the time of Constantine and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324. This feast became a universal celebration in honor of the basilica called "the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world" (omnium urbis et orbis eccle-siarum mater et caput) as a sign of love for and union with the See of Peter.
A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE
ALL SOULS’ DAY MASS LAST SUNDAY
For any who were able to join us at the 9am Mass last Sun-day, it was a Mass to be remembered as we read aloud all the names of our faithfully departed family, friends and loved ones who were buried from St. Juliana Church this past year. Please continue to keep all the families who have lost loved ones this past year in your prayers. May God grant them eter-nal rest and may perpetual light shine upon them. Thank you to all who made this commemoration a beautiful celebration!
Members of our Bereavement Committee
greet family members after the Mass and invite them to take
one of the roses offered in
commemoration of all who have died.

HOLY FAMILY SERVICES ADOPTION & FOSTER CARE
ARMORY NEWS Our local Armory is opening soon. This is an area where the homeless of our community can come to seek refuge in the eve-nings during the Winter months.
Parishioners from our community go to the Armory on a regular basis. Please help them to provide some of the following items for the homeless people and families they will be serving: Warm clothing (new or used) Winter coats (new or used) New socks New underwear (men and women)
All clothing can be left in the large bins and shelves at the Par-ish Center (south east corner) by the St. Vincent de Paul Office. Thank you for your generosity.
SPECIAL CHILDREN….NEED SPECIAL FAMILIES Holy Family Services will be with us November 29th and 30th
with information about the oldest, private, non-profit, faith-based adop-tion agency in Southern California. In the US today, there are 400,000 children in Foster Care, and of that number, 56,000 of the children
are here in California. This shows the urgent need we are in to create homes for kids. Please search your heart for God’s plans and plan to meet a repre-sentative while they visit our parish the end of the month.
