EDWARD MARTIN

Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to

people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we

adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your

great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, al-

mighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God,

Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the

sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the

sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at

the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the

Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with

the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the

Father. Amen.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son

of God, born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true

God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;

through him all things were made. For us men and for

our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the

Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and

became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he

suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third

day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into

heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He

will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead

and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the

Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has

spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I

confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I

look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life

of the world to come. Amen.

1st Reading Jer 1:4-5, 17-19

The word of the LORD came to me, saying: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you. But do you gird your loins; stand up and tell them all that I command you. Be not crushed on their account, as though I would leave you crushed before them; for it is I this day who have made you a fortified city, a pillar of iron, a wall of brass, against the whole land: against Judah’s kings and princes, against its priests and people. They will fight against you but not prevail over you, for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD.

Responsorial Ps 71:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 15-17 I will sing of your salvation.

2nd Reading 1 Cor 12:31—13:13

Brothers and sisters: Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts. But I shall show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in human and angelic tongues, but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy, and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, it is not pompous, It is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing. For we know partially and we prophesy partially, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things. At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known. So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Gospel Lk 4:21-30 Jesus began speaking in the synagogue, saying: “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” He said to them, “Surely you will quote me this proverb ‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say, ‘Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.’” And he said, “Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away.

Evangelio Lc 4, 21-30

My dear friends, I have been working on a series of "lessons" about our faith and have now decided to begin printing them. What I offer below is just the first part of what will be a series of parts to describe what we believe, and why we worship the way we do. I ask that you read these as one extended explanation, rather than individual sections, each unto themselves. It may help you in reading them to keep the previous pages of the bulletin to see the argument outlined in full. I hope that it will be a helpful guide to understand what I believe to be a central issue concerning our Church at present.

Part I De gustibus non disputandum est.

A healthy spiritual life is like a healthy diet: the right ingredients in the right way with the proper exercise lead to continued progress. Your spiritual health is conditioned on the soul’s food, as your bodily health depends a lot on the food you eat. We can say without much adieu that one’s spiritual life is like a well-balanced diet. But like all diets, most of what we ingest is subject to our tastes, what we like and dislike. As children our diet looks different from our diets today, but the principles that guide them are the same. Children balk at eating vegetables when they have found, or grown accustomed to, the joy of eating sweets, and often these sweets get the better of us the older

Parte I De gustibus non disputandum est.

we get. What we “like” or “dislike” is often shaped by habits learned through exposure over time. People will argue, often, that there are tastes in the spiritual life, but they often forget that the value of food is not simply in whether one likes or dislikes it, but in what it does for the individual’s health. Every good dietician will argue that good food leads to health of the body, athleticism, energy, and tends toward overall happiness while, in the same way, bad food tends toward lethargy, obesity, and poor overall health. Those who, like me, often tend to the easy route almost always find themselves in the fast-food lane, getting a quick fix, satiating hunger, and growing all the while. After some months, or years of this, good food ceases to look good, and all one wants is the cheeseburger and fries, please. Tastes are shaped by experience and are often learned. The enjoyment of a fine brandy or bourbon usually can only be had after the first few coughs, pursed lips and (possibly) gasps for air. After you get over the initial shock, you can become rather accustomed to the delicate notes of a fine bourbon aged twice in fired-oak barrels served “neat” in the right glass and even enjoy them. Take another example: you cannot expect someone with unrefined music tastes to understand the intricacies of opera, especially if all they’ve been exposed to were the syncopations and off-beat lyrics found in rap music. One requires an intricate knowledge of music, its origin, its theory, and its historical development, the other, only requires the listener to “bob” their head to the overwhelmingly loud base felt through a speaker system. Children that learn to drink soda will learn to crave it for all sorts of reasons, but it remains bad for them, even though they think they “need” it. They learn the demand for these cravings because they were taught them. If you don’t, how-ever, give the child soda, their first inclination will be to refuse the carbonated sugar and prefer water or even a glass of chilled milk. Those who get accustomed to fast-food, enjoy fast food far more than the salad. In fact, their distaste for salad will grow so much that they may even make the sideways comment while looking at their greens, “when is the food coming?” Taste accepts the familiar and desires what it knows. People who listen to rap music, feign at the thought of the opera. Those who only watch T.V. have a kind of repulsion to the thought and silence of reading a book all afternoon. Those who enjoy what is good, desire it; the same goes for those who enjoy what is less-good. The food we eat, the various nutrients we digest, help or hinder our health. Obese people tend to eat food that is less nutrient rich than the athletes running in the marathon, even if the obese person eats far fewer calories. What we put into our body bears out how we live and what we are able to accomplish. The same goes for what we “ingest” in our culture. What we put into our eyes, listen with our ears, and take in through social media will directly be reflected in our ideas, opinions, personal development and cultural life. It’s time to change the conversation away from tastes and preferences as such, to a more objective standard; a standard of measure which concerns health as a whole. We must be
