We’Ve CoMe ThiS FAR By FAiTh

RefrainWe’ve come this far by faith,

Leaning on the Lord; Trusting in His holy word, He’s never failed me yet.

Oh can’t turn around, We’ve come this far by faith.

VeRse 1Don’t be discouraged

when trouble’s in your life, He’ll bear your burdens

and move all misery and strife.That’s why we’ve come this far

by faith, Leaning on the Lord;

Trusting in His holy word, He’s never failed me yet.

Oh can’t turn around, We’ve come this far by faith.

VeRse 2Just the other day

I heard someone say He didn’t believe in God’s word;

But I can truly say that God has made a way,

And He’s never failed me yet. That’s why we’ve come this far

by faith, Leaning on the Lord;

Trusting in His holy word, He’s never failed me yet.

Oh can’t turn around, We’ve come this far by faith.

1Then we turned, and set out toward the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord spoke to me, and we circled Mount Seir for many days. 2Then the Lord spoke to me, saying, 3“You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north. 4Command the people, saying: You are to pass through the territory of your brothers the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, and they shall be afraid of you. So carefully watch yourselves. 5Do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as a footprint, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau for a possession. 6You may buy food from them with money so that you may eat, and you may also buy water from them with money so that you may drink. 7“For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the works of your hands. He knows your wanderings through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.”

PSALM 107:1-3 (nRSV)1O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever. 2Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those he redeemed from trouble 3and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

6:00 p.m.eXoDUS 2:1-10 (niV)

1Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, 2and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. 3But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. 4His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.

5Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. 6She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said. 7Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”

8“Yes, go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother.9Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him.10When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.”

Litany Affirming the Pursuit of JusticeMinister: Only surpassed by the wondrously deep mystery of God, the mystery of humanity demands our empathy, piques our curiosity, and feeds our hopes. Made in the image of God, we are all a dynamic combination of dust and divinity.

Congregation: We are called to do justice.

Minister: We are praying that our lives, as we embody the power of God, stand as witnesses against demonic practices of racism, sexism, xenophobia, war, economic exploitation, greed, urban educational terrorism, domestic violence, political apathy, police brutality, urban gun violence, and self-destruction.

Congregation: We are called to do justice.

Minister: Though we live in an empire built on genocide and enslavement, like Jesus, we will fight to secure the dignity of all humanity and preach the sacredness of all human life -- life infused by God’s breath.

Congregation: We are called to do justice.

Minister: We will love our neighbor, as we love ourselves. We even declare our determination to preach with our feet, proclaim with our lives, and profess with our practices that all our humanity is “caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.”

Congregation: We are called to do justice.

Minister: Marked by a system steeped in rugged individualism, greed, maiming materialism, and unlimited consumption, America relegates millions of its citizens to gross indebtedness and paralyzing poverty. We are called to usher people to new vistas of wholeness and beyond the boundary lines of rejection, marginalization, and exclusion.

Congregation: We are called to do justice.

Minister: We journey within ourselves to find God creating new life for us, that we may create new life for those around us.

All: We are called to do justice.

Pastor Melech also served as an Assistant to Father Michael Pfleger at the Faith Community of Saint Sabina in Chicago, Illinois for three years. In addition, he served under the Rev. Dr. Frank M. Reid III at Bethel AME Church in Baltimore, Maryland, as an Assistant to the Pastor

and Ministerial Intern for Community Transformation; most recently, he served as the Pastor for Youth, College, and Young Adults at the Ward Memorial AME Church in Washington, D.C., where he created a weekly Saturday service entitled “The Bridge,” a contemporary worship experience geared towards the unchurched.

He also received his Master of Divinity from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, under the tutelage of Dean John W. Kinney. He has also completed studies at both Chicago Theological Seminary and Princeton Theological Seminary, respectively.

His prophetic voice and insightful commentary have been sought after by local, national, and international media outlets such as CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, CNN International w/ Don Lemon, ABC News’ “This Week,” CBS’ “The Early Show,” and PBS’ “The Rock Newman Show” and print publications, including the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, the Boston Herald, Buzzfeed, Black College Wire, BET.com, and The Final Call.

In 2011, the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference awarded Pastor Melech with the Wyatt-Lucy Fellowship, given to high achieving young adults with a heart for faith-based social justice. On October 10, 2015, he was selected to give the opening Christian prayer at the 20th Anniversary of the Million Man March, making him the youngest speaker on that day’s program. Recently, his courageous leadership and service during the Freddie Gray protests in Baltimore were featured on the front page of the New York Times website as the “Young Leader in Baltimore.”

To Do JusticeAt their best, the instruments of a jazz ensemble – the saxophone, trombone, piano, bass, and percussion – engage in a sweet uninterrupted dialogue among equals. Though these instruments are meant to play different genres of music, they come together to create an authentically cosmopolitan sound. It is a musical representation of democracy. Every great ensemble is equipped with a bandleader who cuts through the chaotic scores of music to bring order and structure to the composition. Bandleaders such as Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock, and Miles Davis have been celebrated over the years because of their ability to foster this productive interchange among instruments. They teach us the importance of democratic leadership. These lessons of democracy expressed in Jazz are also present in the cultural phenomenon of Hip Hop.

As we look at the condition of our world today, it is clear that we need a jazz and hip-hop ethic of democracy. All around the world at this present moment, the free and fair flows of democratic political arrangements are under attack. The ideals of democracy are under assault and the discordant, cacophonous sounds emanating from the mouths of brutish leaders, misleading mouthpieces, and dangerous demagogues have arrested the attention of every discerning ear.

In this moment that carries revolutionary significance, we need leaders who embody what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called the Drum Major Instinct. We need leaders who see differences in culture and ethnicity as a representation of the diversity of God’s ideas. We need creative disruptors who will resist regressive regimes that threaten the livelihood of the poor people, the differently-abled people, immigrant people, and Black people. We must break the silence of this moment by calling for a revolution of values where all people are valued as children of God. We need leaders with the organizing genius of A. Philip Randolph, the strategic prowess of Bayard Rustin, the courageous advocacy of Fred Shuttlesworth, the tenacity of Ella Baker, the scholastic genius of Vincent Harding, the melodic rhythms of Mahalia Jackson, the conscious leadership of John Lewis, and the prophetic fire of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

If by chance you are tempted amidst the cacophony of disunity and dissention in our nation, let me remind you of a hymn sung by millions of freedom fighters in the Black freedom movement. This hymn, written by James Weldon Johnson, is not only an artistic expression of our journey as people of African descent, but it is also a radical vision for a progressive, democratic society. The first stanza affirms the democratic theme of the hymn: “Lift every voice and sing.” This simple, yet poignant phrase brilliantly displays the power of democracy. Every citizen has a voice that can join the chorus of freedom and liberation. Every citizen in our society has the unique capacity to push our world towards Dr. King’s vision of a Beloved Community. Every human has the Divine spark within them that activates social change irrespective of their race, religion, creed, or nation of origin.

“Listen Up!”Storytelling SeriesSaturday, February 10th, 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m

February's title, An Apple for Harriett Tubman, by Glennette Tiley Turner shows how Black people use their resources to create new possibilities. Enslaved African-American children, like young Harriet Tubman, had to work hard. She spent long hours picking the juicy apples she loved, yet was forbidden to eat. Harriett made her escape to the North when she was grown and ultimately became the guiding force for the Underground Railroad. A storyteller from ASE, (pronounced Ah-SHAY), The Chicago Association of Black Storytellers, Aseblackstorytellers.org will be reading for this event.
