Firstly some dates for everyone to be aware of – the BBC have been following Christians Against Poverty for the last year to provide material for a programme about our work. This will be shown on 5

th October BBC 2 at 21.00. We have

had no editorial control over this but believe it will truly show the great work being done by us. Please spread the word so we can have as big an audience as possible. Also, if you go to the following link you will have all the relevant info. and also a prayer we are asking as many of our friends to join in with us, - https://capuk.org/get-involved/day-of-prayer. The next CAP Awareness evening will be on the 28

th October at St. Bartholomew’s Bobbing.19.30. All are welcome to attend

and find out more about who we are and what we do. The first official meeting of the CAP Steering Group representing the Partnership Churches in Sittingbourne met on the 12

th

September. Plans for the oversight of CAP’s work in Swale are being laid and we are sure this group will be an invaluable asset going forward. I was grateful that I could attend the CTI Sheppey meeting on 12

th September and thank all those involved. We are confident

that we will eventually be able to provide a fuller CAP service to the Island. Ruth and I will be at Sheppey Evangelical Church on 30th Sept, sharing the story of CAP with their fellowship. Something we are only too happy to do with any Church Leader / Fellowship on the Island. We have three CAP Money courses being run on the Island in the near future and are very excited about this. The Coffee Mornings at Phoenix House are expanding – on 9

th & 23

rd Oct and 13

th & 27

th Nov. We will have a CAP Money

course being run at the same time within the building. The Debt Centre is now fully booked with clients until the new year, which is great, but still means clients are having to wait 2 – 3 months before we can start to help them with their journey out of debt. However we have had someone come forward who is willing to train as a Debt Coach. This is wonderful news as it means the number of clients we can handle at any one time will increase by 50%. However it will be 2019 before they are trained and can start. We have had our first client from Faversham so the profile of CAP is being spread throughout Swale which is, of course, exactly what we want. Ruth and I have just returned from a 2 day CAP conference in Northampton, known as “Closer “. Really great gathering to worship our Lord and get a “top up “from the Holy Spirit and also hear the latest news and initiatives from Head Office, some of which I find totally brilliant, so watch this space.

The wedding bells rang out twice in

September as we had two weddings at

SITTINGBOURNE BAPTIST CHURCH

On Saturday 1st, the lovely Vicky (then, Torres)

married Ben Wintle and the new Mr and Mrs Wintle

had a wonderful reception in a marquee. Proud

mum, Sonia looking fabulous in her red outfit, broke

from tradition and gave a Bride’s mum speech.

Stephen Adjei

What are your first memories of

coming to Sittingbourne Baptist

Church?

I would have to say hearing Chris speak the Word and

Wisdom of God. I cannot see a human being when he is

talking, I can see him being more in tune with God.

Usually I am a praise and worship guy – I always go to

church for music, and my background to music is

different from this church. So although I love the

worship here, it was more noticing Chris and his

preaching – his examples, analogies. I am a Baptist

believer. I worked in a Baptist Church in London as a

Church Administrator. I led Friday night prayers. I am

fully Baptist, and when I came to Sittingbourne, it was a

bit different from what I was used to in London. I was

going to attend the Members’ discussion with Chris in

the evening, but could not find any doors that were open

to get into the church that Wednesday. I may do this in

the future.

Would you recommend the church to others looking

to settle into a church in Sittingbourne.

Without a doubt I would point them in the direction of

Sittingbourne Baptist Church. I have had experience of

other churches around here – Catholic, Church of

England – but in my opinion, this is the church for me,

and the one I would recommend. The alternative

churches around are not for me but that is not for me to

judge. So if there is a new believer, I would bring them

to Sittingbourne Baptist Church because God says that

we should be wise and if we play the fool with lack of

knowledge, we will perish. So I would recommend it

because from what I have seen, what I have heard, I

believe in what Sittingbourne Baptist Church teaches.

Another fantastic week at Soul Survivor week B took place in August! Our young people and leaders had an amazing time together in Peterborough. God truly moved throughout the week with over 1,000 young people dedicating their lives to Jesus and we are elated that 2 of our young people, Jediael (JJ) & Oliver also made commitments to Christ. Special thanks to Diane, Grahame, and Brian for working so hard throughout the week, we could not have endured the week without your hard work keeping everything together. Next year will see the Soul Survivor finale, bringing an end to the festivals since 1995. We are grateful for the impact Soul Survivor has made on the young people across the UK and even abroad.

Worship Corner

October 2018—by Brian Dickson (Worship Co-ordinator)

Welcome everyone to worship corner. Every month I hope to share about a particular

aspect of praise and worship in our church, and of the Worship Team which includes the Tech

Team and the Church Choir. Scheduling information can be found towards the end of this article.

Worship Team Our worship team loves to make melody

toward our God and Saviour with their

instruments and their voices, but who are they?

Meet the worship team - Mark Wrighton

Q. What is your role in the worship team? I do a bit of everything – I play piano, keyboard/organ, work

as the sound engineer and am a digital projector

operator. Not all at the same time, but occasionally sound

and projector together if we are short of volunteers.

Q. What do you like about being part of the

family at SBC? I have been at SBC for over 40 years, and a member since

1986. SBC has broadly the same spiritual outlook and

scriptural interpretation as I have - so I think we are

compatible! Also, I like the way that SBC is the full

package – offering a full preaching calendar and groups to

suit all from new believer (or even non-believer) up to long

term disciple, and age ranges from “babes in arms” to “very

mature”.

Q. What do you like about being part of the worship

team? It is a chance for me to use the skills God has given me to

help the congregation to worship. It is a chance to be

involved – I firmly believe that there is a role for all

members in the life of SBC, some more visible than

others, but all vital to ensure things function as smoothly as

possible while still being open to the direction the Holy

Spirit’s leading.

Q. Name some of your favourite worship songs/hymns? On hymns, I always enjoy “What a friend we have in Jesus”

– it is rare in that it’s a hymn that you can vary the musical

style of enormously and the congregation still appreciate it.

For modern songs, “In Christ alone” is great (but complex to

play) and “Come people of the risen King” has great

playing options.

Q. Is there a musical instrument you wish you had

learned to play?

I have a house full of instruments – an organ in the front

room, a piano in the dining room, and an electric piano, half

a dozen keyboards, four recorders, a flute and two

melodicas in the spare room. I have still to get to grips with

the flute – I have not got the embouchure right yet.

Mark is looking at putting on some training sessions for

those who have an interest in operating the sound desk or the

digital projector. Please speak to him if you are interested.

New Song of the Month The new song for this month is

‘Greatest Hallelujah’ by Matt Redman.

Our new song for October is performed by

another SBC favourite, Matt Redman.

‘Hallelujah’ is a Hebrew word meaning ‘Praise ye the

LORD’, and is only found four times in the New Testament,

and all in Revelation chapter 19. It is part of a song sung by

a great multitude, and takes place in heaven at the end of

days. A glorious occasion when the saints praise their

saviour.

Dear friends,

I have been back on Lesvos for a month after returning briefly for my brother, and a

friend’s wedding. It was good to be back, though it was so brief that I saw very few others.

Having returned I have been given responsibility over the finances of the base, which is

certainly a steep learning curve. My intentions are to plug into the Community Centre and

Greek ministries as well, as soon as I have a grasp on right handling of the finances.

The Community Centre is a fairly recent venture of the base, in partnership with GEM, another group of

people who dearly love Jesus, and want to be able to minister to the refugees we receive here in both

practical and spiritual ways. It is outside of the camp Moria setting (recently featured in a BBC news

article), which provides a space for our friends to decompress, to learn English if they desire, to safely

talk about Jesus, and even for a moment feel some sense of normality.

Greek ministries is still in its foundational stages, as the people are very hesitant to engage and befriend

with any depth of relationship unless we can find things to connect well with them on. Of these there are

very few, as the language barrier is an issue, and the people of Lesvos are not the most friendly until they

know you well, which as I've said, is a challenge to achieve! But the work is only just beginning, and

we're excited to see where it leads.

Otherwise, our Bluewater DTS has sailed with the YWAM ship Next Wave, and it has been a privilege to

be a part of discipling and encouraging them. They'll return soon, and then we'll have our Refuge DTS

starting in October, which I am very excited to help disciple, befriend and train.

Please pray;

For God to continue to open doors for our community to reach out with the gospel of Jesus to a people

deeply hurting, as He is the only real answer long term to these situations.

For the base outreaches, that we would do as God desires, and see more and more fruit from it.

For God to lead us to "people of peace" whom He has made ready to hear the gospel.

For more workers to be sent to Lesvos, plugging into making God known to the people here.

For support, prayerful and financial, and please, a blessing on myself as I take on the challenge of

accounting.

That these DTS schools would be launched as new missionaries, to their home nations, to the far afield,

but all deeply loving God, listening to his direction, and operating in obedience, as we are all called to do.

Thank you for your prayers, and thank you to those who contribute. I am entirely dependant on your

partnership to be here, so if it is something you feel God is putting on your heart to do, and you are not

already doing so, please get in touch, and I will gladly give details of how you can support

financially.

My love to you all, Phil Seabrook.

(If you want to send donations in support of Phil Seabrook and the work he is doing please speak

to Miles Attwell our Mission rep, and he will give you Philip’s contact details).

To the Churches and Fellow Christians in Sittingbourne

World Day of Prayer 2019

It may seem early, but it is time to think about 2019 World Day of Prayer. Representatives from

the churches in Sittingbourne get together a few times to pray for and plan the service which is

held on the first Friday in March each year. If you would like to know more about the WWDP,

please go to www.wwdp.org.uk.

I would like to have representatives from all the Sittingbourne churches, to ensure you all have the

privilege of being part of this special day. This involves attending a few meetings and being avail-

able on the 1st March 2019. I can be contacted by email at [email protected], or mobile on

07981070190. Please contact if you have any questions. Coming to the meetings does not mean

you are committing yourself to leading in the service.

The first meeting for prayer and fellowship will be held at 2pm on Friday 5th October in The

Hub, Sittingbourne Baptist Church. Attendees can just arrive on the day, or let me know in

advance. (A separate meeting will be held at 7pm at 97 Kent Avenue, for all who cannot attend

during the working day and would like to be involved in the evening service.)

Further meeting dates are:

2 November Prayer and

planning,

1 February Prayer and

Practice

1 March WWDP Service

The service for 2019 will be

held in the Sittingbourne Baptist Church. To enable as many people possible to be involved with

the World Day of Prayer service, there will be two services, 10.30am and 7pm. The same service

outline will be followed, but different people will be involved at the services, with a youth focus

included in the evening service.

The World Day of Prayer starts as the sun rises over Samoa and ends 38 hours later back in the

Pacific, as the sun sets over American Samoa. We will be praying and sharing with people in over

120 countries and islands around the world. Each year the service is put together by a different

country; this year it is written by

the women of Slovenia, with the

open invitation for all to come to

God’s table...

‘Come – everything is ready’.

Looking forward to fellowship

together

Yours in Christ
